Despite our initial report, it now seems the test mule is likely to be the next-generation Nissan 350Z.

The future Z appears to be smaller than the current model.

The prototype was seen testing alongside a Porsche Cayman and BMW Z coupe.

NURBURG, Germany — When Nissan showed up at the Nürburgring test track in Germany with a new prototype coupe earlier this week, we initially pegged it as the production version of the Urge concept. Since then, we've dug into the details and it's now looking more like the next-generation 350Z.

Although the prototype is clearly shorter than a standard Z coupe, it's not dramatic enough to signal a completely new vehicle. Our information indicates that the reworked chassis is nothing more than Nissan's attempt to shave some weight from the Z.

At roughly 3,900 pounds, the current model is on the heavy side compared to its competitors. Instead of employing exotic materials to get the weight down, however, Nissan is simply carving down the chassis a little. With a current wheelbase of 104.3 inches, the next Z isn't likely to go as small as the 95.1-inch-wheelbase Porsche Cayman. We're guessing something in between the two numbers is a safe bet.

Another clear sign of this prototype's intentions were the cars on hand as benchmarks. According to spy photographers in the area, Nissan was testing the Z prototype alongside a BMW Z coupe and a Cayman. As lofty as Nissan's goals are, it's not realistic to think it's benchmarking an entry-level $20K coupe against that kind of European iron.

Also consider that the current 350Z is at the end of its lifecycle. The 2008 model will mark six years on the market, so it's clearly due for a heavy redesign. Look for a name change, too, as we fully expect to see the 3.7-liter V6 from the Infiniti G37 under the hood of this new Z.

What this means to you: A cheap, rear-wheel-drive Nissan sports car may come eventually, but this prototype isn't it.

It's a test mule.. they're probably testing non-cosmetic stuff like drivetrain, transmission, new suspension, etc...

So, how could they estimate size by looking at the CURRENT model with nothing showing as to what's coming for the next model?

where'd they get the 3900lb figure from? I know the Z is an overweight pig; but I dont think it touches that. Unless its an automatic touring convertible; then it MIGHT get that high.

Zs are slow, no doubt though. It needs the new motor from the G37 and about 200lbs shaved off (from its current 3400ish)

I believe it has been confirmed that the 3.7 liter G37 engine is the one it is getting. I read somewhere that they are estimating 340-350 hp for the next Z. Should be interesting.

They need to make this car less bubbly.

I may consider it if it is done well...

Didn't this car suffer some severe wheel hop and stuff?

Short wheel base probably not what this car needs. But weight reduction is.

Nissan 370Z?? Hmm, that just doesnt sound right. And they are going smaller?? Its already cramped inside the current one.

I thought G37 doesn't sound right too, but people will get used to it . . .

Should've just called it G coupe, it's not like they need the number to differentiate between different engines.

I don't think it's a big deal, BMW have 318, 323, mercedes have/had 180, 190, 220, 230, 280, 380 etc., Lexus have 430(they could have just call it 450, just like BMW call their 4.8 litre engine cars 550, 750 instead of 548, 748) & 460 . . .

260z didnt sound all that good either to some. But it was there nonetheless. *shrug*

Though there is something about an early 240z in mint condition with the fairlady mirrors. Of course thats still nothing compared to the 2000gt :)

Except BMW and MB haven't been consistent.

328i used to have a 2.8 litre I6. Now it's a 3.0 litre I6. (Ditto with the 06 325i with the exact same engine).

or the last gen C-Class... C240... it had a 2.6 litre V6 (perhaps they didn't want to confuse it with the C260d in Europe? but we never got the diesel anyway).

oh oh.. my favourite one. The C180 Kompressor has a 1.8 litre supercharged engine in Europe. When it came to Canada, it had the C230 Kompressor badge even though it's the same car. Apparently, we can't have a C180 label cause having an engine the size of a Corolla engine is bad PR. We'll keep the C230 K name and just swap the 2.3 with the 1.8 litre. No one will know
