McLaren and AMG go head-on...an F2?
The British magazine Autocar is reporting that McLaren and AMG will both introduce mid-engine V-8 supercars in 2010, both with Mercedes-Benz engines. The McLaren will likely be called the F2. The first McLaren was the legendary F1. The AMG will be a Mercedes nameplate car, with the SLC label.
The F2 once was engineered as a mid-engine Mercedes. But , , after initially supporting the idea, Daimler-Benz declined to pursue the project in 2004 because the company’s mainstream Mercedes models were hemorrhaging money and the company was looking for any possible means by which to cut costs. Moreover, the SLR model had failed to achieve the success in the supercar market which Daimler-Benz had assumed for it. So, the project was dropped.
But it wasn’t dropped by McLaren. A mule wearing a Ferarri F360 body has been spotted at the company headquarters in England. It is expected to have V12 power, though it may ultimately be introduced with a V-8.
AMG, however, is taking over supercar production for Mercedes-Benz. According to Autocar, Daimler-Benz has enlisted AMG to build a mid-engine turbo-charged V-8 supercar to debut at the Geneva Auto Show in the spring of 2008. It is to be smaller and lighter than the SLR. It is expected to make use of suspension components from the anticipated Black Series SL.
