Thumbs up Just for Dashocker - BMW X3 is voted top all-terrain car

BMW X3 is voted top all-terrain car
Publish Date: Wednesday,18 July, 2007, at 01:17 AM

THE BMW X3 has been voted ‘All-terrain vehicle of the year’ by readers of Europe’s most widely sold all-wheel drive car magazine, Auto Bild Alles Allrad.
Previously this year the BMW X3 was also voted ‘Off-road Vehicle of the Year’ by car magazine Offroad.

“The BMW X3 has a strong following in the Middle East, with sales 23% higher in 2006 compared to 2005,” said Phil Horton, managing director, BMW Group Middle East.

“In addition to this, regional sales for this successful model up to June 2007 have also increased by 10% in comparison to the same period last year,” he said.
“Our customers demand exclusivity, high quality and excellent performance from all BMW models and the new BMW X3 is no exception - delivering sporty handling and premium comfort.”

Offering a combination of agility and versatility, the new BMW X3 has continued its predecessor’s story of success, having launched in the region in November 2006.
Powerful new engines, fresh design and a sophisticated interior make BMW’s Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV), lauded for its outstanding agility and driving dynamics, even more attractive than before.

The new BMW X3 also features BMW’s new generation of straight-six petrol engines - boasting a composite magnesium/aluminium crankcase, VALVETRONIC and bi-VANOS.

“More effective and faster interaction of BMW’s intelligent xDrive all-wheel drive with Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) and engine management is ensured on all engine variants by Integrated Chassis Managements (ICM) with its optimised computer technology,” the spokesman said.

“The BMW X3 is enhanced by numerous additional functions - BMW’s new DSC not only ensures superior driving stability and traction, but also optimises the effect of the brakes by increasing brake pressure as required in response to even the slightest fading under extremely high brake temperatures.

“Dynamic Stability Control also comprises the anti-lock brake system (ABS), Automatic Stability Control (ASC), Hill Descent Control (HDC), Trailer Stability Control, and Cornering Brake Control (CBC) preventing the vehicle from swerving whenever the driver applies the brakes lightly in a bend.

“Given its wide range of qualities, the BMW X3 has become an outstanding achiever in international car markets. With virtually unlimited options in the use of the vehicle, sporting and dynamic driving characteristics, the stylish presence of the X3’s body design, and superior quality of finish make the new BMW X3 a genuine exception in the all-wheel-drive market,” the spokesman added.

I recently reviewed an X3 by request and found it to be a pretty nice overall machine despite its Chris Bangle styling (and even that was better-looking than some larger BWM products). It had impressive body and frame rigidity, sheet metal, and of course, the superlative BMW steering gear and chassis dynamics (especially for an SUV). The only things I really disliked on it were the cheap-looking and feeling Navajo leather, the flimsy steering-wheel stalks, and, of course, the I-Drive. It is also rather pricey......you pay for what you get.

The X3 is not offered with I-drive Marshall The steering-wheel stalks are very solid and no different than the other Bimmers. No debate, just wanted to let you know

What other vehicles came behind the X3 in that survey?

Yeah...a couple of points, anyway. Sorry...I confused that part of it with my X5 review.

Yes, sorry. I confused the I-Drive part of it with the X5.
But I have not been impresssed with the feel and solidness of the stalks on any new BMW product I have driven...I stand by my statement on that one.

We'll just be on opposite sides of this issue.......just like in the Debate threads.

I promise you the stalks are straight off a E46 3-series. You really cannot fault the X3 for "outdated technology" compared to the X5 because it is one of the last BMWs still running on the E46 platform, which dates back to 1999. Hence, the controls, dials, and buttons are from the Z4 and 3-series......which in my book is a good thing. I don't like the new layout that's on all the newer BMWs.

And I certainly don't like how the '07 X3 with the N52 motor lacks a dipstick.
