Default Kia to present Sports Coupe concept at Frankfurt

Kia to present Sports Coupe concept at Frankfurt

Posted on Wednesday 18 July 2007

Kia has released a teaser image of a new concept car developed by its European design center that will be presented for the first time at September’s Frankfurt Motor Show. The new concept was designed under the guidance of Chief Design Officer Peter Schreyer, formerly of Audi, and is the follow up to the stylish ex_cee’d cabrio concept car from the Geneva Show.

Following the reveal of this teaser, Schreyer described how Kia had given him the opportunity to shape the carmaker’s whole brand design and character. “Seldom does a designer have such a clean sheet to work with. We started this exciting journey with the Kia ex_cee’d cabrio concept at the Geneva Show back in March, and at Frankfurt I’m sure Kia will surprise the entire automotive world when people see our new sports coupe concept in the metal,” he explained.

The new concept will be a 2+2 coupe that will be fully designed and constructed in Europe, and we’re hoping that it’ll lead to a new and affordable production sports car.

Kudos to innovation. Hopefully, Kia can be a little more proactive with R&D...

In all seriousness though, Hyundai and Kia are coming with RWD coupes, and Toyota sure as hell better do the same. We have FT-HS rumors, but Hyundai has spyshots of the thing, and Kia's concept looks and sounds destined for the showroom.

Default Frankfurt Preview: A New Face for Kia

When you think "Kia," is this what comes to mind? Chief designer Peter Schreyer intends this sport coupe concept to be the new face of the Korean marque. It makes its debut at the Frankfurt auto show in September.

SEOUL, S. Korea — Kia Motors said it will introduce a new corporate "face" in September at the Frankfurt auto show when it unveils a 2+2 sport coupe concept created under the direction of Chief Design Officer Peter Schreyer.

Schreyer, who formerly headed Audi design, directed the Kia ex_cee'd cabrio concept that made its debut earlier this year at the Geneva show.

Kia said the new sport-coupe concept, designed at its Frankfurt studio, will present a more consistent, unified look for upcoming Kia products and "heralds a future product strategy focused on design."

Schreyer was quoted as saying: "At Frankfurt, I'm sure Kia will surprise the entire automotive world when people see our new sport-coupe concept in the metal."

What this means to you: Let us hope that Schreyer and his team can answer the nagging question, "What does a Kia look like?"

Sure looks like an Audi to me. Schreyer's design is quite obvious at least on the front end.

Kia Whaleshark? Competitor to the Z4? haha... This might be an interesting looking car when we get to see the rest of it, albeit in concept form. As for someone mentioning RWD where did you see that? That would be pretty nice if it were.

Default Kia's 2+2 coupe to aim at the Audi R8, production in 2 years

What's next, a Hyundai Continental GT? Oh wait...

Kia’s 2+2 coupe aimed at the Audi R8, production in 2 years

To become big, you have to think big; and Hyundai is doing exactly that. After comparing its cars to the likes of BMW, Lexus and Mercedes, sister company Kia is following the same route with their new 2+2 sports coupe concept.

A teaser image of the Kia 2+2 sports coupe concept was released last week. When we first saw the image, we never realized how much it resembles the Audi R8. Of course that’s not a surprise since it’s designed by Peter Schreyer, ex-designer for Audi responsible for the Audi TT.

Kia officials expect the 2+2 sports coupe concept to create a big stir in Frankfurt in September, so the production model could be on the market in 2 years.

The production version is expected to have a 2.0 liter turbocharged engine that is currently being developed with Hyundai. It may also get rear-wheel-drive from Hyundai, who is currently working on their own rear-wheel-drive coupe.

Kia is hoping that the 2+2 sports coupe will give it the change to become a major player in the European car market.

2.0L turbocharged (most likely I4) to compete with the R8?

Sorry but theyre going to need a bigger displacement/more cylinder engine.

AutoExpress puts it a bit more bluntly.

Kia's copycat coupe
Kia's Frankfurt concept points at a future luxury coupe

Take a look at this cut-price Audi R8. You can only see a basic ‘teaser’ outline at the moment, but this striking silhouette is the first official glimpse of Kia’s ground- breaking new supercar-chasing coupé.

Set to be unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, the two-door bears more than a passing resemblance to the high-performance German flagship. And that’s hardly surprising – the newcomer has been penned by ex-Audi designer Peter Schreyer.

Created at Kia’s Frankfurt studio, it is the next step in the Korean firm’s plan to become a major player in the European car market. While the shape is expected to develop into a mainstream production model, the new face revealed here will also feature across the entire range in the future. And with bosses certain that the concept will cause a big stir, a showroom-ready version could be as little as two years away.

The low-cost R8 lookalike will most likely be front-wheel drive, to keep costs down and allow engineers to use existing platform technology. However, a rear-drive set-up hasn’t officially been ruled out. Either way, it will feature a new 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine, currently being developed with Hyundai.
