Default End of production for the Aston Martin Vanquish.

Thursday 19 July 2007

The last car ever to be produced at Aston Martin’s historic Newport Pagnell plant has rolled off the production line today; a V12 Vanquish coupe that marks the end of more than fifty years of production at the Buckinghamshire site.

The Vanquish was the poster child for Aston Martin over the past decade and the ending of its production plus the closing of Newport Pagnell is the end of an era for the luxury marque. The site is to be sold and will be likely turned into offices and houses.

Production is being moved to its newer and far more modern Gaydon facility at Warwickshire, which is also responsible for building Jaguars and Land Rovers as well as being home to the British Motor Heritage Centre

Wait, where does it say that there's no more Vanquishes? It just says the last car made at the site was a Vanquish. They're moving production elsewhere.

I fell in love with it the first time Bond drove it in "Die Another Day."

I'd get it if Halle Berry was part of the deal...

I took a driving class in an Elise at the Lotus facility when the Vanquish was being "tuned up" by Lotus. It was amazing to see it blast around the track; unfortunately, cameras were forbidden. The sounds raised goose pimples on your arms.

Sad to see Newport Pagnell close. It was a historic site for Aston Martins. And to simply turn it into offices and houses too; it just ain't right.

Aston Martin found a good owner in Prodrive. Hopefully Jaguar and Land Rover will find the same.

Default Last Aston Martin Rolls off the Line at Historic Newport Pagnell Plant

A sad and meaningful day at Newport Pagnell, England, as the ultimate Vanquish S Ultimate Edition rolls off the line after a half-century of Aston Martin production there.

NEWPORT PAGNELL, England — It was a bittersweet moment in the storied history of Aston Martin on Friday when a limited-edition Vanquish S Ultimate Edition rolled off the line here. It signaled the end of 50 years of production at the Newport Pagnell plant, as Aston Martin shifts gears under new ownership.

The final vehicle — chassis number 502593 — will not be sold. Instead, it will be retained by the company as a historic vehicle. The final 50 Aston Martins built at Newport Pagnell were the Vanquish S Ultimate Edition, which costs the equivalent of about $375,000.

"Although the day was tinged with sadness, it was a celebration," said Kingsley Riding-Felce, Aston Martin's director of works service and customer relations.

The Newport Pagnell location was purchased by David Brown in 1954, with full production kicking off four years later with the DB4. The company said nearly 13,000 cars have been built there since then.

Ford sold Aston Martin earlier this year to a consortium led by David Richards, John Sinders and Investment Dar and Adeem Investment. The company's Gaydon, Warwickshire, plant was opened in 2003 and builds the V8 Vantage, V8 Vantage Roadster, DB9 and DB9 Volante. The DBS will also be built there.

The Newport Pagnell site will continue to be used for Aston Martin servicing and restoration.

What this means to you: The Aston Martin brand lives on, but a bit of its historic past bites the dust.
