View Full Version : thinkin about getting an e46 m3...tell me what you think

I currently drive a 1992 1jzgte single turbo'd sc300. I love the car, but with a new job, comes commute time. I'm thinking about getting an SMG e46 m3. I can't imagine spending 40+minutes in traffic in my SC. The 6 puck clutch does not make for easy engagement, and the ride is not all that comfortable.

Can anyone contribute?

They say E46 M3s are some of the best daily drivers you can have that has extraordinary performance.

In the characteristics of aesthetics and performance, I think they're awesome cars

I wouldn't want a car with that kind of tight suspension as a DD. My personal preference would be to do the Earth some good and get a car with good fuel economy and a comfortable ride.

I would get the 6-sp. Stay away from the SMG.. unless you can't drive stick. :)

I like the E46 M3 quite a bit. I have two small issues with them:

1) Extremely common here

2) A a white man in his thirties, I don't appropriately fit the stereotype for this car!

Hard to argue with the performance, and they look killer with the right stance & wheels.
(Derrick @ D2 Autosport can definitely help you with this)

I love the E46 M3 but for the money, I'd get the 2007 E92 335 with 300 hp. Lot's of power with better daily use characteristics. I believe the M3 has about 330 hp. Not much difference in power and more comfy ride. Yeah, that's what I'd do. Almost bought one and after 3 months with the GS350, I wish I had.

ooo yes good point, the SMG is quite retarded ... apparently you can 'learn' to drive it w.out all the random jerks and stuff but ... bah, no ... go manual. hell, if you cant drive manual ... LEARN FOR THE SAKE OF THE M

love the design of the E46 M3, never get tired of looking at them:thumbup:

I suggest the manual. You're probably thinking that the SMG will make your commute slightly easier. And it will, on your left foot. But the SMG is jerky, dimwitted, and slow for daily cruising. It will never drive like an automatic, but rather someone who's just learning to drive stickshift. It's great if you're tearing up the backroads, but don't expect a comfortable ride in terms of shift quality in slow traffic.

i have to agree with the "common" part, it's everywhere here, but as long as you don't mind that it's a fine machine!

Can anyone contribute? What is there to think about? The E46 M3 is a better package out of the box than an SC300.. You do not have to cut & paste an E46 M3 to make it a beast.. If you can afford one get it.

a prof once pointed out: 'if everyone (including you) has a high standard of living, do you really care?'

i have to agree, if i have an LP640, and so does everyone else on my street, I'm still ok with that, if we all have pools and spas and all the other nifty toys, i'm also ok with that

Like i said in my previous post...doesn't look like its going to happen at least for another few weeks. Its a shame too, I really love the car.

The SMG is the worst tranny ever.

The M3 is a wonderful car though.

You say this all the time and I don't quite get it. Who cares?

The typical Lexus owner around here is a white man in his mid 30s to 60s. :uh:

p.s. November isn't too far away. I'd wait until the new M3 comes out. There will be tons of people selling theirs and you might regret your purchase (as far as price goes).

The best car that I've ever owned to date. Totaly flat cornering, and instant power on tap. 300lb ft of torque from 1400 rpm to 5000 rpm is amazing.. Car does not feel lethargic at all. You know its sounds like a quieter version of the E46 M3 when you get it above 4000 rpm range. I am sure the 135 will be the same way. Trying to get used to the push button start. Got to put the thing-a-ma-jig in a slot to start the car lol..

I would have done it only for the new 335. Free maintenance, including brakes plus 300 hp and BMW has some killer deals down here. I wished to high heaven I would have done it. Now I'm stuck in this big cow.....sweet cow but a cow it is.
