Default New DeLorean Gullwing Back into the Future (confirmed)

DeLorean gullwing confirmed for production

Tuesday 21 August 2007

The gullwing DeLorean made famous by the ‘Back to the Future’ movies is set to re-enter production next year after a 25 year hiatus. The cars will be hand-built in Humble, Texas, by the renewed DeLorean Motor Co. at a price of $57,500 a piece. Assembly will be slow, with only two cars per month expected to roll-off the production line, and the new models won’t be identical to the original. The cars will look similar but will get a refreshed interior and more powerful engines.

The new DeLorean company was established back in 1995 and has been refurbishing the original cars ever since. Sitting in a warehouse in Texas are thousands of parts that were shipped over from Ireland after the original production facility was shut down.

Speaking with The Detroit News, DeLorean’s VP James Espey explained that up to 80% of the parts used in the new car will be the original components produced back in the early 1980s. He also revealed that the cars will be sold at five different locations in the US and that there will also be one dealer in Europe.

Good. Let's hope for two things now. First, that they aren't financed with cocaine money like the last ones were, and second, that the quality control is better this time.....there were significant problems with the last one, especially with the integrity of the gull-wing doors. Part of it was the design/engineering, and part of it was the second-rate nature of the old Northern Ireland DeLorean plant.

It's a shame, though, that DeLorean himself didn't live to see the car's resurrection. Yes, what happened with the cocaine bust was wrong (and I'm not defending it), but he was in a desperate situation at the time...and he was acquitted by a jury who looked at the case carefully.

And, for those of you who grew up in the American muscle-car era like I did, DeLorean was responsible, more than any other single individual, for the classic mid-sized car with a big V8....he quietly got the ball for the original GTO of 1964 rolling over the opposition of GM management......and the rest is history.

The time-travel jet pack better be standard
This would be interesting

Imagine Michael J. Fox is the spokesperson (hopefully he's still in good health).

So the exterior will basically be the same 80's design? That's what it sounds like. It still looks decent but definately very dated.

BTW, the Flux Capacitor will only be available as an option to those with a certificate or degree in Quantum Mechanics.

I love Deloreans. The two problems with restored classic Deloreans are the outdated interior and the weak engine. I'm glad they're taking care of those things. It won't have the classic iconic status as the original, but it does make them that much more drivable.

btw there's a 3-rotor RE engine Delorean on the internet somewhere. Sweet

I wonder what they'll use instead of a suck-a$$ Renault V-6

I remember a show about them and they were saying that the company still had enough parts to build over 200 complete cars that were OEM from the 80's. The company refurbished them or built them - according to what you wished.

It WAS ahead of it's time and a wonderful car.......WAS.
