Toyota Europe to cut back RAV-4, dropping Land Cruiser

Posted on Wednesday 26 September 2007

Europe’s CO2 regulations are strict, and becoming more so, and car makers are taking action to meet the tough standards. For Toyota, that means cutting back on RAV-4 sales, and eliminating the Land Cruiser from Europe altogether.

The Japanese maker seeks to reduce its fleet average CO2 emission to 140g/km to meet voluntary EU rules. The RAV-4 mini-SUV/crossover is so popular it’s skewing the CO2 emissions of the brand in Europe, so Toyota has decided to raise the price to ensure fewer sales, reports Auto Motor und Sport. The Land Cruiser, on the other hand, has never been a big hit with Europeans, and will simply be pulled from dealerships after the current model year.

Although the CO2 regulations are voluntary now, there is talk that they could become law in the near future, which explains why Toyota is taking action to meet them. Other car makers in the European market may have a tougher time manipulating their lineup to meet the rules, as many do not include small, low-emissions cars at all. Makers like Porsche have even threatened legal action if the proposed rules are enacted. via motorauthority

I don't think the Land Cruiser (especially this new model) will even fit the streets of most European cities.

It can however drive over most of the buildings...

Pretty interesting. Had no idea the Rav4 was selling so well there.

lol, joke article of the year? We just got info on new LC for Europe at the dealership.

Toyota will be slowing down production from last year for rav4, but it has been best selling year ever, and in 2008 few new SUV's are coming out.

Which cities would these be as I see plenty of Land Cruisers, Range Rovers, Hummers, Escalades, stretch Town Cars, Cayennes etc?

but not many in London or Paris ?? Particularly in Paris, I've seen how they park their cars on the streets of Paris LOL, it's hard enough to find parking space even for small cars . . .

LOL - loads in London - but that may change if the Mayor of London succeeds in his plan of making large cars and SUVs pay £25 per day to drive into the city.

I read the original report from AMS, and am still unclear as to when exactly did they think this will happen... Possibly for future models, since it is not happening now (new LC just going into sales).

Plus Rav4 creates only 5% more CO2 than Avensis with the same engine, so it makes no sense...
