skribblez 10-01-07, 12:03 PM Sorry Jon, beat you to the punch.

bitkahuna 10-01-07, 02:13 PM Guys, let's keep this thread to photographs. Thanks.
whoster - sorry to hear about your friend's cat. Looks ok in the pic, can you say what happened?
About the pic (sounds cold now, sorry  ) I think you should crop a bunch off the top.

Sorry Jon, beat you to the punch.

It's okay, as long as someone gets the thread title right and starts off with a picture themselves to keep this going on. So post a picture, it's usless when the first poster doesn't. It's like peer pressure, everyone's doing it! I'll be posting some soon, had a lot of shooting this weekend

Here is my first contribution for October. Had just finished installing my Eibach Springs and my buddy had his supra parked in the driveway and it looked so nice with the sunset colors reflecting on the black. Wish I had my tripod though.

It doesn't say anything about those holders being illegal. It just says that they must be securely fastened and visible which the holder is. Back on topic.

I shot a soccer game for the very first time today. We had a D1X in the office with a 80-200 2.8 mounted, so I decided to charge it up and take it out for some fun. I had a pretty good time using it. I've never been a big fan the 'spray and pray' shooting. So I tried to time these shots to the best of my abilities.
The following pictures were all taken with the D1X:

Just finished a shoot tonight with one of my gal pals.
Canon 1dm3, ISO 3200, 85 1.2L EF II at f/1.2
My buddy was shooting next to me with his Nikon D2x - he commented "absolutely worthless lighting for the Nikon".
hapaboy 10-11-07, 01:44 AM that's great to hear that comment about the nikon. i used/use the D2X in studio and it was crap in comparo to the canon. however, the nikon excelled in natural light, slightly better than the canon! so the problem lives on. but that's ok. i would bet that most studio shooters are using canon, 80+%
what light was that? halogen? hensel? photogenic? or big boy stuff?

Wow nice shot :)
How far were you away from the subject? and where was the focus point? At 1.2 I would expect the DOF to be paper thin, however this is not the case so leads me to wonder what the distance was.
l4wr3nc3 10-11-07, 03:46 AM Heres one of my most recent work
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2041/1514018210_2788aad389.jpg?v=0
Lighting that I used was a standard household bulb sitting in the other room. Nothing really special.
Apparent DOF changes as you move towards or away from an object. Since she was on about the same focus plane, the DOF wasn't affected by very much. Now once when you move close in, the DOF comes into play and will be more exaggerated.
I was about 15 feet away from the model.
I've never had my Canon go nutty in natural lighting, even with the 1Dm2. The hybrid sensor system that the D2h uses (outdoor sports) gets confused if you're sitting in the shade while shooting at bright light...it will think you're in the shade and compensate as such. My buddy still can't wait for his D3 to come in!
Man, I really need to pick up photography...

By the way Skribblez do you automate your sig in your pictures?
Because I can't figure out how to do that in Photoshop.
I can do the resize, the frame etc but not the brush strokes of the sig.
Thanks.

Yeah, there was a link that showed me how. I'll look for it and post.
Ok, here are a few pics. please give imput, comments, anything! Also, if there is something I'm doing wrong, can you explain how to do it better? I've only had this camera (RebelXT with original lens) for about 2 weeks and I've been trying to get better. Thanks!

CptnTonus 10-12-07, 04:34 PM ^^ Those pics are pretty solid, Joe. You seem to know what you're doing.
caymandive 10-12-07, 05:59 PM Joe, my only suggestion is to try making use of lower ISO values. I see too much granularity. My favorite one though is the yankee candle and you did a good job of matching exposure time to the high ISO.
S54toIS350 10-12-07, 07:24 PM Joe,
Pics look great, but the cropping is a little excessive.

bitkahuna 10-13-07, 08:08 AM How do you guys look at the EXIF? Do you save the image to disk and then open it in your picture viewer/editor? Or do you have a quicker way?

Thanks for the feedback! Why exactly would I change the ISO? I really don't understand exactly why. The yankee candle picture, the Sacred Heart Poster, and the single red candle were taken in the A-DEP mode (Don't really know what that even means?) But I found it was taking the best picture. I tried Av and Tv but I don't really know what they are yet, hahaha
Joe,
Pics look great, but the cropping is a little excessive.
Thanks, but I really haven't grasped taking a larger picture yet, so I've stuck to smaller things to begin with. I have found that using macro settings or taking pictures of smaller things have worked out better for me because I don't really understand a lot of the concepts yet.
Any tips anyone can give I'd really appreciate it!

I have an EXIF viewer plug-in for firefox. I just right click -> properties on a picture and it shows me the exif.

ISO is like the camera's sensitivity to light. The higher your ISO number, the more sensitive it will be. The problem is, the higher ISO value you use, the more it will compromise image quality and sharpness. You have to find a happy medium between your exposure/shutter speed and your ISO value. Sometimes, you can get away with a really high ISO value in a bright area where there aren't many shadows or dark spots, provided you use a fast enough shutter speed. It really all depends on the lighting conditions though.
I've never played around with A-DEP mode on my XT, I never quite understood what the point of it was. It means Aperture Depth-of-Field, but I'm not sure what the purpose of that mode is exactly.
Av is aperture-priority mode. In that mode you decide what aperture you want to use, and the camera decides what shutter speed to use.
Tv is shutter-priority mode. In that mode you decide what shutter-speed you want to use, and the camera chooses the aperture.
I always shoot in "M", which is full manual mode, myself.

I didn't get to drive it, I didn't even get to ride in it :(. The owner is a really generous individual that hosted an open garage (it was more like a museum) at his private resident and invited like 100 of us and we all went on a cruise later on.
And Even if he did let me drive it, i think I would have to pass...1 million dollars is a little too much for me to pay back for him:p.

Yea, i think i saturated too much.I think imam edit it. but i wont repost. THanks for the idea!

Will do. Thanks
skribblez 10-21-07, 04:58 AM #6 wins in my book.
#8 definitely has good coloring, too bad it's too saturated.
S54toIS350 10-21-07, 05:10 AM If the lighting isn't in your favor perhaps you should try using phil flash using AV mode slow sync to give it a natural warm look.
I think the last 3 is the best. A shallower DOF would make the photos very nice. #6 and #8 would look nice with a large aperture telephoto (if you have one)
bitkahuna 10-21-07, 09:51 AM Lisa - nice pics. I think 1-5 are too 'flat' though (not enough contrast or saturation). 6-8 have a bit too much color as you know, but are much better.
I like 6 & 8 the best, although I'd prefer 6 without so much rotation.
Lisa - excellent job for being your very first portrait session.
Watch out for cut off body parts. I see a few cut off hands and feet here and there.
I think number 3, 6, and 8 are my favorites, but I think they would have been better if the horizon were not slanted. I really dig her expression in number 8 - nice capture, Lisa.
I would have to agree with S54 about using the fill flash. I think a little bit of off camera flash would have been pretty sweet as well, but it does take a little more time to setup and it also means carrying more equipment.

Here's one from the mark 3 and my favorite telescope optic. 850mm at f/8. Gitzo CF1325 tripod with Bogen 3047 head. The optic itself weighs in at over 15 pounds.
70-200? That's a little BABY compared to the smaller of the two big guns that I shoot with. :)

Still braggin' about the monster lenses... :p
Anyway, stunningly beautiful shot of leaves. How much post processing was done? Plus would love to see a bigger version.
Not much post processing at all. Just some sharpening (you can really push with the t-scope optics) and some saturation.
Will send you a PM.

That is called a GARDEN ORB-WEAVING SPIDER; very common on the West Coast of Canada and the US.
Venom toxicity - the bite of Orb-Weaving Spiders is of low risk (not toxic) to humans. They are a non-aggressive group of spiders. Seldom bite. An adult is about 2/3 to more than 1 inch in body length - has a bulbous abdomen - often colorful - dark to light brown pattern. The common Golden Orb-Weaver Spider has a purplish bulbous abdomen with fine hairs.
Habitat - often found in summer in garden areas around the home - they spin a large circular web of 6 feet or more, often between buildings and shrubs, to snare flying insects, such as, flies and mosquitoes

Nice shot, Percy. I love the 200 2.8. There is something definitely very fun about it, but I think I enjoy using the 135L just a little bit more.

You should be more surprised that I didn't use my t-scope optics for the bird. :)
200 2.8L EF II is actually a very fun lens to use. Probably one of the cheaper L glass, but performs quite well.
