I'm not a big muscle car fan but the concept camaro at least was pretty good looking at thee NYIAS. Hopefully they don't penny pinch and ruin it in the production car.

That would be the GM chief of design, hugging his creation.

I would hug it if it were my creation too :P

The hug heard 'round the world: GM design chief Ed Welburn plants a big sloppy one on the Chevrolet Camaro prototype in Australia.

The 2009 Chevrolet Camaro will be assembled in North America.

MELBOURNE, Australia — The notorious photo of a GM executive hugging "the first fully representative prototype" of the 2009 Chevrolet Camaro has been released on the GM FastLane blog.

"Bob [Lutz] and Ed [Welburn] thought their FastLane readers might like to finally see that picture," wrote Alicia Dorset, GM FastLane blog editor.

The image shows Welburn, General Motors vice president for global design, with his arms around a camouflaged version of the production Camaro. The picture shows a partial side view of the Camaro and gives a clear look at the vehicle's roof line and silhouette. It appears to hew fairly closely to the concept version of the vehicle, although the image is small. A GM insider confirmed to Inside Line that this is considered to be the first "official" image of the Camaro, although he noted that it is not a traditional "beauty shot" and said that those images have yet to be taken.

Lutz reported on Welburn's emotional response to seeing the production Camaro in an earlier posting on the FastLane blog. He said Welburn was so overcome after seeing the Camaro that he "ran over to it, and hugged it!" "I have the photo to prove it — but of course we can't show it to you just yet," Lutz wrote at the time.

The Camaro will be built on the new rear-wheel-drive global Zeta platform that Holden is engineering. It will be assembled in North America.

What this means to you: Your first glimpse of the production Camaro. Will you get as emotional as Ed Welburn?
