According to latest reports Bentley has developed a prototype Arnage powered by Bugatti’s mammoth 8.0L W16 quad-turbo engine, with all 1001hp being sent directly to the rear wheels. While such a huge amount of power without AWD might prove difficult to handle, a detuned version could be successful as a limited edition model for the many Bentley customers looking for something special with their customization.

Bentley is already well known for their ability to cater to a customer’s needs, with their Mulliner division dedicated to customer-specific customizations. Now Autocar is reporting the luxury carmaker from Crewe could offer an Arnage with the heart of a Veyron, however as much as we’d like this story to be true the UK publication has a penchant for providing semi-reliable info.

It’s been said the president of Bugatti and Bentley CEO Franz-Josef Paefgen is the force behind the project. The Arnage is currently Bentley’s flagship model and the hope is that such a car will be able to increase sales before the next-gen model arrives in 2010. With ‘only’ 500hp currently powering the current Arnage, the engine upgrade should give the model a real edge over its competition.

If this happens, I see no use for Bugatti to build a saloon. Plus seeing if and when Maybach goes down. It only be in fighting. Also got Rolls Royce to deal with.

Audi helping Bentley with Arnage Hybrid for 2010?

Everyone is pretty excited about the total Bentley Arnage redesign scheduled for 2010 (U.S. debut will come in 2011). And as we told you before that the engineers at Bentley are hoping to make the Arnage a little ‘greener’ by using lighter components, rather than produce a gas guzzling luxury car.

According to AutoCar, Audi will be helping out a great deal to address the green issues. The next-generation Bentley Arnage is expected to be built on aluminium spaceframe chassis made by Audi, skinned with aluminium panels.

Of course, the car will still be powered by Bentley’s 6.75 liter V8 engine. But Audi may help by adding its new quattro hybrid gear or the hybrid transmission that is being developed for the Q7 hybrid SUV.

According to Bentley, their first green push and environmentally-friendly thinking will be displayed at the 2008 Geneva motor show.

Bentley boss Franz-Josef Paefgen has previously told AutoCar that the next-generation Arnage is the biggest challenge for Bentley since the 1930s.

“This will be a totally independent car,” he said. “It will not be like the Continental, a derivative of a VW Group product, although it will use components from the group.”

I just went on a cruise with a Veyron last weekend, but that thing in a sedan...wow...those engines does not sound like an internal combustion engine.

So.. despite all the diesel praise in Europe, why is Bentley suddenly going hybrid instead of diesel?

I'm just assuming it's because it's a luxury car and a diesel clatter (no matter how civilised) is a big no in that stratosphere of cars.

Because it's luxury they can price it however they want and use hybrid technology which is far more expensive (at the moment) than diesel technology. Just my opinion I have no idea what goes through the heads of automaker companies.
