whoster 11-02-07, 08:17 PM i see that you're shooting in the automatic mode...
you should really practice while the D3 comes in Aperture priority mode--it'll ultimately help you understand shutter priority and manual exposure modes as well.
S54toIS350 11-02-07, 09:10 PM I'm just glad to see him shooting :)
Caught this guy "rid'in dirty" this past weekend. I laugh every time I see a white guy bump'in rap music :egads:

Is that a good or bad thing?

whoster 11-03-07, 05:22 AM Is that a good or bad thing?
it's a bad thing because you're not really controlling what you want from the image--you're just letting the camera do the work.
yes the camera should focus and set certain parameters...but if you're not involved in the process of finding a certain look, or controlling depth of field, taking into account the range of the photo on your own--you're not going to learn how to use the camera to its full capacity.

caymandive 11-07-07, 06:41 AM Whoster that is a really good picture and the first one I've ever seen with such a long exposure. Over 3 minutes long! BTW is that a fire burning in the background or just a result of the long exposure?
whoster 11-07-07, 10:37 AM result of long exposure and flash white balance. at other WB settings the flashed areas were looking way too blue, so i opted for crazier background colors and balanced main colors.
Nicely done, Whoster!
I did me some long exposure shots as well:

The Marina Militare brand is the official appelation of the Italian Navy issue watch. This model is a left-handed issue; however it was popular even among right-hand wearers. The winder is protected with a cam lock that prevents accidental changes or damage. The Defense Department jealously restricts any replication of these watches, and because of this, they rapidly become highly sought after collectors items.
whoster 11-07-07, 08:53 PM man jon85 you need a better host than facebook....that's horrible jpeg compression and quality loss.
facebook's host is designed to maximize viewing speed--and it's showing up REAL bad in your shots with the artifacting and anti-aliasing that fails....

Whoster,
Try that shot again. Follow the rule of thirds. Make sure that you get more of the background/road area. Have the pipes follow into 1/3rd of the frame down (top of pipes). Then the shot will turn out much much better.
whoster 11-08-07, 12:04 AM but i got in trouble from the sheriff for being out that late... (no parking allowed after 10PM in the area)..
the background didn't offer enough of a draw for me to include a lot of it--not to mention that through the viewfinder it pretty much looked like i had the lenscap still on...
i might try it again some day.

S54toIS350 11-08-07, 08:57 PM How is cleaning the camera going to make it clear and clean? :p
How is cleaning the camera going to make it clear and clean? :p
Well, when you professionally get the inside of your camera cleaned or have your own cleaning kit, you clean off all the small particles and dust that fuzzes your photos. It makes a huge difference once it's clean. So if i do, my future photos will be sharp :D
jasoncd 11-08-07, 10:40 PM I finally got an Xti last week. I've only had the 70-300 lens for a couple of days. It's not easy to focus in the dark! This was just random luck, passing by a construction site near my place. Cropped and resized, so not stellar quality.

sensor dust doesn't make a huge difference in your photos.
the reason your shots don't look clean is because you have motion blur (in the last shot especially) and also looks that way in the 2nd shot as well.
...weren't these posted in October's thread? (at least of your friend?)

Nice! Do you follow watches?
This specific watch is a Special Edition 217 Luminor Marina Militare Destro....this is a 47mm take on the historical versions (Radiomir and Luminor) created for the Royal Italian Navy (First Submarine Group). Yes, there are very few of these (Militare) versions available...the 217 was a run of 1000 units worldwide in 2005.

Turtles - It was at Sea World in SD. Reason why the rope was there was because that shot I just happened to take really quick as I was walking by so I didn't have the time and mind to how I really wanted it. Just a quick shot.
Puppy - i dunno why. Perhaps my hands were not still enough?

92 SC400 11-26-07, 01:07 AM Ford Robot at a Ford display at the San Francisco International Autoshow. I have never really seen a robot besides those on Star Wars and Robocop and I must say this thing was impressive and funny. It interacted with the audience, which were asking it questions, told jokes, was sarcastic, and noticed things in the audience which it pointed out and commented on. It was definitely interesting.

Careful with unsharp mask. If you mis use it, it can mess up your photos or cause trouble down the line when you are into multi layer post processing.

Yeah, I try not to overdo it. I've definitely overdone it in the past, so I back off for the most part. I just like to make the pics look a bit more crispy.
I didn't even use USM in that first pic that I posted, and generally don't at all on long-exposure shots.
whoster 11-27-07, 10:58 PM i prefer using smart sharpen instead of USM.
smart sharpen at 100% (or more) with very low threshold and radius. (preferably as low as they go) it's cleaner than USM.

My NC has the driver's seat out of it right now cuz I spilled coffee down under it and I hated the smell so I'm cleaning the carpet as thoroughly as I can! Hopefully after tonights efforts I can put the seat back in tomorrow.
CptnTonus 11-28-07, 11:56 PM Not bad, little blurry, not quite as sharp. Try the "other" one :p
The blur is because it was windy, at least, if you're referring to the blur in the trees. You probably zoomed in 400% on it to look for hot pixels though. :p
I would have thrown the 85mm on, but it's not really meant for pics like this, unless I wanna get a nice shallow DOF on that cloud in the middle of the pic. Hehe.
Holy overworked polarizers Batman. :D
No polarizers here. That's literally how the sky looked. When I got home from school I ran in the house to grab my camera as fast as I could because I knew it wouldn't stay like that for long. I didn't even really do much in post-processing, just the typical little things.

1.6 NA. I had my reservations, but on the first test drive I really fell for it. Yeah, on paper it has little power but, it is sooo much fun and still feels peppy. The car really just put a giant smile on my face.
Other than the seat, how have you enjoyed the NC?

caymandive 11-29-07, 10:12 AM S54 I think the picture looks great! I actually like the 10s exposure which in turn made the leaves look blurry, but it's more like movement than blurr to me.

Oh I can totally relate. :D And 'peppiness' also relates to the car's WEIGHT and as you know the NA is so light which is what makes it so much fun to drive. The balance and steering are just so much fun when taking corners. :D :D
Other than the seat, how have you enjoyed the NC?
Most fun car I've ever owned and more practical than I'd thought it would be too - the trunk can hold 8+ bags of groceries. Some years ago I looked at the NA/NB but I'm 6'3" so I just couldn't make it work comfortably for me. The NC is a good bit bigger, but still pretty small/light.
Oh and I cleaned the carpet and put the seat back in, all good.
