No, sir. ISO 200, f/3.5, 30" shutter speed. I played with the curves a lot to get the look that I was after. The curves are where it's at. ;)

I use it in the RAW conversion before it gets processed as a .jpg. The more I experimented with it, the more I began to love it. Now I won't process a photo without playing with the curves at least a little bit.

Curves is the only way to properly adjust exposure because it allows you to select specific areas for exposure. Curves and noise reduction with some Gaussian blur can save A LOT of under exposed or pictures with poor lighting.

Your 2nd pic has a 30 second exposure, how'd you get the stars not to move? :p

To be honest, I don't know. Haha.

When using the kit lens vs. the 85mm, they tend to streak a lot less for some reason. Also, I shot that pic at f/3.5, which also seems to help.

Percy
01-05-08, 12:51 AM
It will all depend on the focal length. There's a nice formula somewhere that says that focal length x number of seconds = 1000 or less will have stars that show almost no trails.

SO, 100mm lens x 10 seconds is the limit. Or if you're shooting with a 24mm, about 40 seconds.

Here's mine.

Shot with the 1D3, 135mm f/2.0 lens.

Sheesh, I wonder if that law was in place BEFORE 9/11?

Percy
01-12-08, 01:05 PM
Before 9/11 you could have pro gear running in and out of the huge shopping malls. They wouldn't think twice. Now they "claim" that you might be taking pictures to get a layout of the place. DUH...you could get that from the DIRECTORY MAPS.

And in the federal buildings. Used to be that you could run around there with heavy medium or large format equipment. Now the "security" guys are frowning even if you take out your cell phone and "possibly" taking a picture.

Many people are highly misinformed about many situations - especially the security guards. Even the police tend to be highly misinformed. Remember - they're listening to their watch commander or their deputy chief...and that comes from the chief and or the mayor.

Their take is probably to see how much they can screw up our civil liberties. Or brainwash through media. Ya...if you saw it on the newpaper or on TV, it's gotta be true. NOT! (PLACE FOX MOON LANDING HOAX HERE)

Permit for a tripod - ridiculous. There are a few places that will require permits if you're taking pictures. It's just a cash cow.

Brainwashed idiots would be an accurate description of some of the people.

Next thing you know you'll need a permit for having shoes...or a walking permit to experience the "feel" of a historical building!!!

right after 9/11 you could not take photos of buildings or in subway in NYC , i saw many people getting stopped by cops with dumb question "why you taking pictures ?"

Percy

Then they had better start posting "no pictures beyond this point" signs. Oh yeah, they'd have to get rid of their security camera network too...you never know who is on the "inside" doing "infiltration" work. Pure paranoia.

I for one would love to see NY or Chicago start posting up those signs. Then take the city to the supreme court on freedom of speech rights. It's out in the public. It's a public building.

I'm not anti cop or anything, but some of the CSOs or officers are so bored at the malls that they tape the girls changing in the car, or down their shirt, FULLY ZOOMED. You can read the tags on the shirts from several hundred feet away. There was an investigation being done on some shoplifters and they "by accident" taped some fairly "healthy" girls in the process. 99% on the girls, 1 percent on the possible shoplifters.

Next thing you know, they'll take away the cameras and then mark the people that have a good memory as a threat. Or we could do the Mao thing...if you think, you die. Nice "revolution" that was.

Fight for your camera/ gear / freedom of speech rights!

Sorry, I have to call BS on this one. That is not your photo. I hope you're not claiming that it's yours, because this is a physically impossible photo. This is a purely digital creation by a German student named, Inga Nielsen who used Terragen, a scenery rendering software. The title is, "Hideaway."

I took this one at the southpole. What do yall think? :)

What a day...
Went to Aerotect and got my front end protected this morning, boy... waking up wasn't easy and not to mention the part of blue taping 40 degrees out.
later in the afternoon my friend drove me around for a project, and we "accidentally" discovered a pretty damn cool canyon, did a night shot there, and played some light painting

Few shots taken in Bangkok past few days:

1. Just another face in the crowd

2. Heaven for girls

4. Tuk-Tuk speeding in the night
http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x270/egoipse/Bangkok08_182b.jpg

Usually I don't like to crop my images but above set were perfect for square crops so for once I got the scissors out.

Non-crops:

5. Reflections, colors, escalators and people
http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x270/egoipse/Bangkok08_020.jpg

6. Christmas & Cars
http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x270/egoipse/Bangkok08_179.jpg

Same problem here with taking pictures, security guards all over the place and sending one away if taking pics in buildings, subways, skytrain, etc.
A lot of guards too so it is a bit of a pain in the butt. However they usually hesitate a moment, so if one is quick the pics are in the box before being told not to take images...
Bag search at entry of Subway, malls, etc are a joke here, open up the bag, guard takes a glance at topmost things without looking what's deep inside and that's it...'thank you sir'...
Overall just annoying, does not add anything to security, only positive thing is it employs a load of people who otherwise wouldn't make a living...

Anyone who doubts the D3 should now be silenced based on these images?
:uh: These are wonderful images, but I don't think you can tell just how great a camera is with images that size. Furthermore, anyone with a little bit of know-how in the realm of PP could produce the same sharp, vibrant, contrasty images with little noise to boot. I mean no disrespect, Bit. But I am one to reason with logic. To shut the door on all D3 non-believers based on these images seems a bit deficient in logic to me.

tools4fool

They were taken with D3; used 'vivid' image setting, Some pics had Active-D lightening on, RAW files, converted to jpeg in 'NX view', images downsized and resharpened in PS.

Otherwise no adjustments.

Data for the images:
1: AF-D 80-200mm 2,8 - 200mm, 1/320sec, f6,3 ISO 800
note that this is a massive crop from entire image, maybe 30% of total image only; girl had few pimples as well which I obviously photoshopped away...

2: AF-D 18-35mm f3,5-4,5 ED - 30mm, 1/80sec, f4,5 ISO1250

3: AF-D 80-200mm 2,8 - 200mm, 1/250sec, f3,2 ISO1600

4: AF-D 18-35mm f3,5-4,5 ED - 23mm, 1/60sec, f5, ISO1600, 'active-D' set high, this was a very dark corner...

5: AF 85mm f1,8 - 1/100sec, f3,2, ISO200

6: AF-D 18-35mm f3,5-4,5 ED - 21mm, 1/30sec, f3,8, ISO1600, 'active-D' to normal

At 1600 there is some noise visible if you look hard enough. 3200 it starts getting visible but not yet degrading image.
Didn't go any higher in real shots so far...

And I would definitely second that. I can take a noisy point and shoot camera, resize it to the resolution limit of this board (800 pixels?) and it'll look good. The real deal is when you have a larger than "web" sized images. I would go for 8x10 at 300 dpi as an absolute minimum. But then most of the prints that I have are 13x19 or better. Some cases 30x40.

Now don't get me wrong here. The D3 is a fine camera. Same with the others in its class. But in no circumstance will it "shut the door" or be "silenced" on any aspect. Nor will ANY other camera system for that matter. There are always trade offs as well as preferences.

Bit - I'm pretty sure you could take a small P&S, do some PS work on it and it'll turn out just as excellent as the pics posted.

Nay, doubt that.

Take a look at the high ISO samples of a small P&S here:
http://www.dpreview.com/gallery/canonsd870is_samples/

In particular pic 1, two red eye girls at 800ISO...impressive noise!
Or the church at dusk, 800ISO...
Further down there is an artillery piece at 1600ISO...
Or the decoding machine at 400ISO...

Even great skill in photoshop and all the filters and noise ninjias will not clean that up me thinks with retaining sufficient sharpness. Even for small internet positing like here.
Never mind that I doubt very much that you could take some of the above images with a small P&S, in particular teh speeding tuk-tuk at night. Nor the shots at 21-23mm...or do small P&S go that wide these days?

The only one you should get is the escalator one at 200ASA, shutter speed/f-stop combo well doable for little P&S.
Maybe the decoding machine at 400ISO could be possible too, but that's pushing it me thinks.
Forget about the 1600ISO shots....and even the 800ISO girlie (my pic1), that is actually already a mighty crop...

Maxim maybe did not use 800ISO on that shot and what P&S was it? Really just a little one?
Maybe you got a link to it, would be interested to take a look at it.

You've obviously never tried that with 1600 ISO pics from a point and shoot! :p

If PS can work for a girl on a Maxim cover, then it'll work for anything else. :)

A Maxim cover will have been done with perfect lighting, not dark night scenes as were taken there with the D3.

Yes, even at 'web size' (however they weren't constrained to 800x600 because they were linked, not attached), the detail, vivid color and lack of noise is impressive.

After I made those 100% crops (magnify view to 100% in photoshop, then crop the image, right?) I had to downsize tehm from about 1200 to 800 for this forum, so they are downsamlped 100% crops I guess. Made a mistake.

But did on real 100%, the girlie:
http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x270/egoipse/100crop1-1.jpg

No in-camera noise reduction on, btw.
Crops sharpend in Photoshop as if I would use them for print. This brings up noise a tad more, but sharpens image as well. Went for a good balance. Just as one would do if going for a print.

More later, shot some 1600++ ISO pics today at Ocean World today, see results soon...

http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x270/egoipse/crop1005.jpg

Had been in the Ocean World in Siam Paragon yesterday, well worth the entrance and had a field day trying out high ISO.
No easy shooting here as there is lot of little stuff floating in some tanks, fishies move all the time, well most of them, thick glass and often curved results in lot of distortion plus few reflexions from lights, etc thrown in as additional hurdles.

Now I can tell you that those with little P&S were helpless. Blured shots, flash bouncing of glass, terrible noise for those who tried their 1600ISO...not much luck for them.

There we go, two squares again first:

Will be back there once I got my macro zoom back...

Also see this photo. ISO1600. Reworked.

The point being for the two photos is the following...

1. They were shot with a mere point and shoot.

2. They are resized to the limit of the board, 800 max pixel dimension.

3. They were just plugged through a quick noise reduction software.

Nuff said.

Percy,

no disrespect either but:

A G9 is not what I call a 'small P&S'. It is about 450$, slightly cheaper than a D40x body. G9 has fairly large sensor as well.
It's the upper range of P&S, shoots even RAW.
I do not call that a 'little P&S'

Yes, the images you reposted are much, much better, good work.
But looking at the 1600ISO gun mount there is loads of plotches (around ceiling beams, blueish water tank (?) right, gun mount itself) where there is a LOT of loss of detail.
It does look OK at first glance, but does not stand a chance of surviving a second look...

Compared to the mark 3, it's little! :)

Most noise reduction schemes, with the exception of a true dark frame, will result in detail loss. I haven't seen any programs yet which will preserve the detail as well as completely get rid of the noise. They are usually trade offs.

If the picture was worth the effort, I would do a dark frame, flat field, bias frame and then process from there. But that's quite a bit of hassle for a quick snapshot.

As good as the G9 is, it's still "point and shoot". The raw files aren't that high of a quality, imo. 10 bit if I remember correctly.

It's fairly typical due to the different glass specs and the coatings they use. Higher index of refraction going on with the 1.2 lens.

Percy

I bet the view through the viewfinder is wonderfully bright!

Between the 1.4 and the 1.2, you wouldn't really notice a difference. The eye has a tough time seeing a .2 stop difference in light. Now if you're eye is REALLY good, then you might be able to pick out the 20 percent increase in resolution, that's just going by the front diameter (frontal area) of the lens. But I doubt it. A few other variables in effect.

The L lens will last a long time though! :)

That sucks about your collar bone. That sucks man. I did that mountain biking awhile back. It does heal pretty fast.

Thanks Bit! XTi with 70-300. I replaced the image with one from photobucket so the EXIF data shows up now and a link to the original. I wish I had used a larger aperature to increase the shutter speed. Still trying to figure what aperatures to use for DOF...

1/90 at f13...shutter speed is quite low already for ducks moving around. f13 not bad but last duck seems to be slightly out of focus (maybe little sharpening in PS can do?) So more DOF needed plus faster shutter speed...

Guess cranking up ISO to 800 could give better slightly faster shutter speed and even more DOF (f16 or more).

Of course a 70-200 f2,8 would make life easier in such situation...not for the wallet however...

Good pic however, like that line of duckies!

Put an engine under the lens. That would be a "fast" lens.

Wheels are a nice start though. :)

Percy I wonder if you had a chance to shoot with 1dsMk2 ,that you think about this camera, after mk3 came out prices went down and I can get it at reasonable prise .

The 1dsm2 is an awesome camera. I can regularly get 20x30 prints made up from the files. 4 frames per second, handles like any other EOS 1 camera. QUITE solid. I've shot with one for several weeks and it always impresses. Actually, when I get the camera on loan, I call up most of my gal pals...the really cute ones and they GLADLY model in front of it. :)

As for where to get them, you could try Arthur Morris (birdsasart.com) or try the good ol fleabay.

I'm trying out the 1dsm3 in May for several fashion shows. 30x40 prints. :) And there are alot of good looking models...I should know, I recruit them!
