Montoya, Franchitti lead team to win at Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona
Daytona Beach, FL (Sports Network) - Sprint Cup drivers Juan Pablo Montoya and Dario Franchitti along with Scott Pruett and Mexican Memo Rojas carried the No.01 TELMEX Chip Ganassi Lexus Riley to the 2008 Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona winners circle.
For owner Chip Ganassi, it was an unprecedented third consecutive Daytona victory.
"This is awesome," said Pruett, who also won his third overall title (1994, 2007, 2008). "This is a true test of man and machine."
"It's been a hell of a year," said Franchitti, who won the 2007 Indianapolis 500 and the 2007 IndyCar Series championship.
The team beat the No.99 Pontiac Riley team driven by Jimmie Johnson and Jimmy Vasser by two laps. Helio Castroneves, Ryan Briscoe and Kurt Busch (-6 laps) drove the No.9 Penske-Taylor Racing Pontiac Riley to third overall.
"I had a great experience out there," Johnson said. "We have a great car and we're just really trying to stick to our rhythm. I tried not to put the car into any bad situations."
The winning team completed 695 laps (2,474 miles) around the 3.56-mile road course. They led 252 laps including the final 100 laps.
The race started on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. with pole winner Oswaldo Negri leading the field to the green flag.
