CERRITOS, CA -- 01/30/08 -- Isuzu Motors America, Inc. announced today that, effective January 31, 2009, it would discontinue distributing new Isuzu passenger vehicles in North America. The discontinuation of passenger vehicles results from the prospective cessation of production by General Motors Corporation of the Ascender sport utility vehicle and the i-290 and i-370 pickup trucks.
"It has always been our intention to remain in the U.S. market," said Terry Maloney, president and COO. "However, we were unable to secure any commercially viable replacements for these vehicles."
Although Isuzu will cease supplying passenger vehicles in North America, it will continue to stand behind its customers and dealers here for years to come. Specifically, Isuzu will continue to honor all product warranties and roadside assistance programs and will maintain its owner-relations call center. In addition, to assure long-term service to its customers, Isuzu will be offering all current, U.S. Isuzu vehicle dealers the opportunity to continue on as service dealerships for Isuzu. "Let me make it crystal clear," Maloney said. "Isuzu will discontinue the sales of vehicles only. Our parts and service operation will remain fully functional. We expect the vast majority of our dealers will continue as service-only dealers."
End Release.

It must be really sad to be an Izuzu dealer, although I don't even know if there are any standalone Izuzu dealers. Maybe a combined Izuzu/Suzuki dealer could sell a few cars a month?

Oh well, it's a long time coming, they had their strength in SUVs but IIRC there was a rollover report which hurt them. Sorry to see them go.

Man, they haven't sold Isuzu here in Australia for years, they're only active in the truck industry (not pick up trucks, delivery type to 10-wheelers).

Sad really and just piss poor management and focus and vision. Here was a company that built nothing BUT SUVs and TRUCKS in the 80s and early 90s. In what SHOULD HAVE been a blessing, people began to buy SUVs and TRUCKs in droves.
Isuzu instead of being a leader since they were ahead in many aspects, just got LOST and put NO EFFORT into their products.
You NEVER sell a vehicle people CANNOT PRONOUCE. That is just MARKETING 101!!

sad to see, i hate to see underdog car companies give up , but what choice did they have?
when you don't actually make any of your own vehicles for a specific market, i can't see that going well.

Almost.
In the 80's, Izusu sold the subcompact I-Mark sedan and Impulse sport coupe here in America......variations of the platform were also marketed as the Chevy Spectrum and Geo Storm.
Later, in the 90s, Isuzu struck up a buisness deal with Honda/Acura where the Rodeo and Trooper were rebadged as the Honda Passport and Acura SLX. In return, Isuzu got rebadged versions of the Honda Civic to market in Japan as their new Izuzu I-Mark....by then, Isuzu had given up designing their own passenger cars, and the new, Civic-based I-Mark was never marketed in America.
For some reason, this doesn't surprize me. I was always confused as to what Isuzu was trying to accomplish, I mean basically their trucks are a chevy with different body panels.

The Impulse was a hot car back in the late 80's. The suspension on the top model was tuned by Lotus. Ahh, I remember those Joe Isuzu commercials. Remember the Jackie Mason Honda Commericals of the late 70's early 80's?:p
