Smart is a horrible car. For its size, price, and everything else you give up, you're not getting that great MPG. A entry Japanese sedan will get about the same.
At least the Hummer serves its purpose, even for the yuppies.

True. A Civic is so much more car and can yield 40mpg's which is in the ballpark of the Smart's mileage.
The Smart's best attribute is PARKING in New York City or Boston.

Ditto. I mean, for those of us who complain about the IS being somewhat small......
I'll never drive a Hummer, though. Unlike soccer moms and bad female drivers, I dislike being high up. It feels unnatural.
