Theres nothing to stop the oil companies. Supply is down, demand is up. When people cant afford to get to work anymore, then demand will go down. Its gonna hurt, and its gonna hurt for a while, hopefully as soon as the government gets its head out its ass, and stop this corn for fuel BS something will be done. I paid 3.47 and thats in Texas, I live about 45 minutes from where the oil comes in and Im still payin. The market will correct itself, it always does, its just this time it may take a little longer.

while i agree that the prices are outrageous and because of them, i do cut back on driving, trips, etc. the thing that really gets me is the fact that the gov't. barely acknowledges it and the direct side effects upon the economy and the average working families. the economy they always talk about is the rich people's economy; investments, and real estate. those things don't really matter to those people, most of this country's population, who dont have investments and still rent apartments. those people have a totally different economy than the one that is in the news.
i guess that they politicians know that poor/middle class people dont have as much influece as the rich, so they pander to the rich instead.

Actually Mike we are in the process of building new Nuclear reactors. Or at least the first application for a Nuclear Reactor was submitted like a month ago.
But I fail to see what that has to do with oil prices as most of our energy in the US comes from Coal. :uh:
In the end what can congress do about the issue?
What actual power does congress really have to stem the price of oil?
Or the president for that matter?
I guess you can make an argument for strengthening the dollar significantly but fat chance of that in the short term.

I am seriously waiting for the high tech euro diesels but the price differential on diesel is starting to make an impact. It wasn't that long ago that here in Cali, there wasn't a lot of differential to diesel compared to premium. Now we are seeing six to ten percent more for diesel so in order to make it worth the bother of having to find diesel to begin with, the differential to a gas model would have to be at least 25% better mileage with little, if any, premium on the diesel. The high tech diesels do that compared to the current petrol alternatives in the larger luxury sedans but there are other areas like putting these things on a diet and at least BMW appears to be pushing into turbos across the board to get bigger punch with smaller engines. I love the choice, just wish they would really get here before the dollar declines any more.

Yeah, just make sure the government doesnt find out, otherwise you're going to be hit with a hefty fine. See, the price of gas includes taxes, which are very high, around 25% of the cost of gas. Since you wont be paying these taxes but still going to use public roads, you'll get a fine, and they will make you pay these taxes.

In the end what can congress do about the issue?
What actual power does congress really have to stem the price of oil?

Start by lowering federal taxes on gasoline.
Next allow exploration and drilling EVERYWHERE the U.S. has control over.
Build nuclear power stations.
Allow oil shale development in the West. This is what Canada did and not only is it helping their government, it's making the country richer!
Negotiate with Iraq to get some free oil as payback for getting rid of Saddam and rebuilding their nation.
Provide BIG tax credits for fuel efficient vehicles.
By the way, gasoline consumption has been falling in the U.S. for quite a while.

The little increase do add up but it isn't that difficult to make adjustments in other areas. I'd already altered my driving patterns 2 years ago and I expect to drive sub 9K this year. :) Since the insurance premiums are decreasing as the car ages, it off-sets the gas. I'm at a wash so far.
I don't mind riding this and I now take it for local stuffs like simple drop-off errands.
