Mazda should have at least salvaged parts of the car that are not prone to being damage by laying sideways for weeks. Headlights, wheels, radio, interior panels, seats, etc.

Yea but the beauty of insurance is that they are going to be reimbursed for every penny of what they lost. As far as the liability goes, Mazda rather not have any piece of those cars get into the hands of the public in fear of lawsuits and other headaches might come their way.

I still don't understand why they wouldn't sell those cars for off road purpose only with some kind of liability waiver. I honestly think less of Mazda now that they would allow such a large scale waste.

That's a bummer. Some of those ideas people suggested for uses of the cars were great, like vocational school and fire extrication training. They wouldn't be driven thus reducing Mazda's liability.

I agree that they could have donated these cars for other uses that could have benefited in so many other ways.

The thing is though, if they donate it, the party to whom they donated could re-sell it to the public, and Mazda doesn't want that. It would be very hard for them to track every one of those cars to make sure they don't "leak out" to the public roads.

You are spot on!! This is the car business and there are people out there who would jump at opportunity to make some major money. Some of those cars would end up being sold to the public at full retail value. There are ways to wash titles, fool Carfax, etc. There are crooks out there.

Mazda was smart to scrap them and make sure they don't make it to the public.

Mazda made exactly the right call. If they'd donated them to some cause there's no doubt someone would be tempted to sell them. Even if they weren't sold somehow and just used without being driven, Mazda STILL ran the risk of big liability problems. The road to hell is paved with good intentions.

I still think this was a huge waste and Mazda took the easy way out. These cars could have been put to good use.
