View Full Version : Pyscholgy 101: The name "Lexus" and it's stereotype...

There was one thing I never saw coming with owning this car.
Here's what I am facing at work since I got my IS in February... Many customers have come in after seeing my car and joke and comment the following, "Oh, you have a Lexus now... you can afford to give me a discount..." Or, ".... big time now, you have a Lexus..." etc etc. Like just because I got broadsided in my A4, had it totalled, have had back problems for months, fought my insurance company tooth and nail to get a fair buyout on the Audi, spent weeks emailing dealers to get the lowest possible lease, I don't deserve to have a decent car like the IS? Of course that is the true story, but you can't go explaining that to every joker making a comment. Most are just kidding, but I never got these remarks when I aquired my A4 in 2003. It's just funny how there is something about the Lexus name that exudes something I wasn't expecting. Maybe it's the TV commercial announcer's voice that sounds snobby over the years? Maybe it's plain old jealousy? I find the whole thing more curious than anything. Anyone else experience a similar reaction? :uh:

Yes, I have similar experiences. During the first few months, I actually tried to keep the car in private; parked my car far and not even mention I purchased a new car. After awhile I just didn't car what people think or how they react. It is a car that I paid for and I can enjoy it anyway I like. Being in my line of work (piano teacher), it is hard to avoid such remarks. Maybe if I were in another field I would not be treated this way...

Interesting, I guess living abroad, lexus doesnt have such strong correlation with "class" and "prestige" as it does in the states. Here in dubai while its still considered a luxury car, its not regarded as onthe same level as its german counterparts. Here audi bmw and merc are the ruling bloc in terms of luxury and being flash. While lexus is very popular here there still exists the toyota sub par interior quality stigma. (obviously most of these peolpe have never sat in a lexus before). And to be honest that ignorance is more aggravating than people thinking your a baller. So next time some one throws you a comment stick your nose up in the air, and tell em "blow me" lol

i don't know what kind of business you run but i heard about a t-shirt that a local car shop employee was wearing... "we proudly screw over the next customer so we can give you a discount!"

haha. maybe you can try that line.

im actually kind of embarassed sometimes. one time last year i was driving around and i accidentally cut off my teacher in his jeep. the next day in class he gave this speech about suburban kids with their expensive cars and how they act like they're on top of the world =\ stared
right at me and then said '"right Ron and Gabe?" im ron and my friend gabe had a newer f150 on 24's at the time (currently has an a4)...in his situation he was playing music too loud and annoyed the teacher.

not only that--when family or my parents friends come over and they see my car outside they're always saying how lucky i am but inside theyre just saying wow you're spoiled. w/e

in general people do see you differently when you have a car like a lexus--although usually it isn't bad.

I've heard that stuff for quite awhile. In the beginning it bothered me a little when certain people would say something.
Now with two Lexus vehicles,I'm really hearing it but it doesn't bother me at all..:)

I've gotten my share of eye rolls - hell the director of my department asked me straight up how much I paid for it. He's a fan - owns an ES and wanted to know but STILL.

In the end, what are you going to do, change their minds? Explain your whole life story to them? It's like a tall guy explaining why he's not good at basketball. I'm a little out of context here, but if they start complaining about your bread, say "Bread is for peasants, I eat cake, biatch!"

ya i got a couple of weird comments, i just tell them its a higher end toyota and they said shut up and drop it. w.e in the end its still a sexy LeXus which is on a whole differnt level then Toyota. its stylish, luxurious and sleek. I love my lex, plus i worked hard for it. why not reward urself with a lexus?

i think the lexus, bmw, mbenz and other high end names just represents a status symbol if that makes sense. that's why people make such big deals about it. now if you drove a ford or chevy in example it's just a normal thing, but who wants to do that? haha no pun intended

I think we all have experienced the jealousy in one way shape or form. Personally, I could care less because I love these cars. I would not let it bother you at all. I also would refrain from developing resentment and hostility as a result. This will only act to add fuel to the parties involved in their jealousy. I had a couple of people at my last job in wonderful Corporate America constantly comment on my gen 1 in a snobbish way. It was always clean and I parked far out to avoid dings. I basically stated, go buy one if you are that infatuated. If you notice, these parties concerned are typically those of lower class who sustain a woe-is-me attitude but do nothing to correct it. They subsequently lash out at those enjoying life. Having said all this, have fun with your "IS" and remember, you have great taste.

That was a wise response and very simple (LOL). Often times, if you change the subject in a manner that cannot be rescinded, you have have won the ability to have annoying people not bother you. My point is, mountain biking is fun.

For me no one really gets into my "business" about my car and how I bought it. One of my coworkers just asks how the car is treating me etc...

Like Brian (above) I park my car at the end of the lot to avoid the knuckleheads from dings...

When I have been approached with the "oh you got a Lexus, huh?"
My response is "yeah and here is why _____" fill in the blanks.... all of them are justifiable :)...

Even with the "girl-car" comment doesn't get to me... My comment has been...
"Yeah she is a beauty, isn't she? And she's low maintenace, unlike that 'b-tch' you call a car"

Well Im kinda facing the same. Normally with my 335 no one really says much but its a nice car. When i got the X5 no one said much and or cared I Drive an X5 but ever since i got my Lexus every one is on me like white on rice. Ohhh now you drive a Lexus you can afford this and that and this and that. Honestly I don't get it. people spend 500 600 a month paying for a other crappy cars when they to can be in a Lexus but i guess they choose not to be.

I too try to hide my Lexus now from everyone just so I don't hear it from anyone. Im so sick of it!

A friend who used to drive a BMW (he now has an EVO) actually warned me about this before I got the car. Too many people think that because some pretentious a**holes are attracted to name brand luxury cars, we're all like that. The truth is, while these cars can get expensive fast, the IS is a reasonably priced car for what you get.

The fact that it is a Toyota is a plus for me and is the big reason I was interested in the car. If Toyota had a car in its lineup that was based on the IS, I would have probably looked at that car first. Anyway, when I get the comments from co-workers, I usually remind them that they paid more for their cars than I did for mine.

i baught my car with my own money and have do have a small note on it.

i commute to college so not to many peoples know ha i drive nor do i try and mention it. i get the what do you drive and i respond with a Lexus, then i get the what kind and i say an IS, then they are like an 03-04, i'm like no an 07, then all they have left to say is O. then it's a buzz of what i have.

also with women i tend not to mention it then they realize i drive a Lexus.

i get alot of stears and what not from people, and a lot of your lucky type of things. i'm like no i'm not lucky i worked for it so i'm enjoying it.

In the minds of the jealous, ANY Lexus model is worth about $60-70k. But in reality, I paid less than half ODT for my new IS. Its the name in general that misleads most and makes them think and envy that you are ultra loaded.

If most people would get the Luxury brand out of their heads and actually do some research before buying their cars, they could easily pick up a lightly used Lexus for about $20k. Which prob. equals how much they are paying for a new Ford or Dodge.

Threxx
05-21-08, 09:25 AM
I bought my lightly used low mileage GS400 at the age of 20 and got sick of hearing people judging me based on the brand name of the car (for better or for worse). Some people buy luxury cars because they want the image/status/prestige associated with it. Personally I roll my eyes at those people... shallow and materialistic concern, IMO.

If they made a car that was identical to the GS400 but with a Toyota badge I'd have bought that instead.

Now that I'm older and in a higher up position in the corporate world people don't give me crap about driving a nice car, but it still bothers me to think that people are looking at me and the badge on my car and thinking whatever thoughts they're thinking.

A couple of years ago I had one client - fortunately and old friend - make some remark about my driving a Lexus now. When I said I couldn't afford Suburbans anymore, he thought I was joking. I explained that on a lease, you are paying the difference between price and residual value at the end of the term. He was shocked when he looked at the numbers.

He's driving a GX now, and his son has been asking me how I like my RX. I think I'm about to cause another sale. :)

The worse of the bunch are probably those BMW owners from high school that either inherited their car from their parents, or bought it cheap because it's junked. Usually it's the E36 owners too. They run around whoring their badge like no other.

Around here, Lexus doesn't really get the 'prestige' that BMW and Mercedes get.

Maybe it depends on the city you're in.

I got a bit of the 'you drive a Lexus? ... hmm ...' even from people related to me when the car first came home. I would just say 'yes I do' and leave it at that.

That said, in Vancouver there are a lot of them around (there are definitely more bimmers but there are also more civics) and a lot of the Vancouver members on this board go to my school so it usually isn't a huge deal.

A couple years ago I had to go out of town to a wedding; I was not only the only Lexus, I was the only import so I was sure I was going to hear about what I drove up in. Surprisingly no one had anything to say.

So lets say its partly the city you're in and partly the people you interact with.

I've gotten more thumbs up and attention in my FJ than in my Lexus. There are so many Lexus vehicles in the tristate area, not a novelty anymore. Same thing with bimmers and MB. The FJ on the other hand, seems to draw lots of attention, both good and bad. People don't know what to think since they don't know what it is. LOL.

this is pretty interesting in accordance to something I just recently read on a blog. There is a project site called http://www.brandtags.net where people input the first word they correlate with a brand name. There is a list of words that pop up for each in relation to what people write. The more people type in a certain word the larger the font appears on the list... lol for example... BMW one of the biggest words... *******... atleast Lexus didn't get that. Check out the site... its a bit confusing at first but pretty entertaining. Don't want to promote for others... but its pretty much sums up this thread.

I bought my 1GS in 2002 and took another job shortly thereafter. I had to go with my soon-to-be-ex-employer and let our client know that I was leaving. The CEO of the company I was leaving told the client, "he has a Lexus now, so he needs extra money to make the payments." I shrugged it off despite the fact the car was already 8 years old and cost me under $16K. Not too extravagant, really.

These people making comments are compelled by the same factor that causes people to say, "mine's next" whenever you wash your car; stupidity.

There's not as many shared platforms with Audi/VW and when there is it's not as obvious.

Who is really going to be able to tell that a TT uses the same platform as the GTI or that the Phaeton, when it was out, shared its platform with the Audi A8 (and Bentley continental, for that matter)

well, most of their crap is fwd, or fwd biased awd.
so I'd say a lot of sharing is going on with vw.

which platform is the A4 based off of? the jetta? they got that fwd 1.8L version.

Audi's design philosophy is FWD or FWD based on AWD... doesn't mean they're sharing anything. Does the IS share anything with the LS or LX despite them all being RWD based?:p

The A4 used to be roughly based off the Passat two generations ago... but starting with the 6th gen it no longer shares its platform with any VW sold in the US... though for the 8th generation about to come out I've heard its new platform may be used as the foundation for the A6 much like the GS platform is used for the IS and SC.

I've had more than one person tell me "Wow, look at your car...you must be rich!"...my standard response is..."Have you seen my car? I'm broke!"

One of the nice things about the SC430 (and I know that many disagree that this is a GOOD thing) is that they haven't really changed much. People are shocked when they find out that my car is 4 years old.

I paid around $40K for my 2003 in 2006. For around $36,800 (I just priced it at honda.com) I could have had a brand-new fully-loaded Accord that no one would have thought/looked twice about. Pass.

There's a guy at work (good friend of mine) who sometimes makes little snide comments like "Talk to the guy with the Lexus" or "I'm not the one driving the fancy car". This guy AND his wife...both drive Acura's (He's got an MDX and she drives a fully-loaded TL) but I'm the pretentious one in my "fancy car"?. Just for fun, I just went to Acura.com and priced out the TL. If they paid anything in the general neighborhood of list, I paid less than they did for my car.

My wife drives a POS 1999 Suzuki. We have one nice car and I'm not going to apologize, be ashamed, or hide it from anyone.

I don't think that driving a Lexus means "I'm better than you" but, when I price out some new cars these days and read the reliability discussions on some of the boards (some of the BMW stories are frightning), I begin to think that driving a Lexus means "I'm smarter than you".

I've been catching a lot of flack from owning my '97 LS400 since I got it a year ago.

I had a '99 Accord EX-L V6, and when my brother turned 16 last October, he got that car and I bought the Lexus from an old man in town (had 96,000 miles on it at the time).

My professors at the college I attend has been giving me flack about it since I told some of them. Examples(s):

When I had to go to one of the transfer offices to get information for the college paper (I was the editor this year), the journalism adviser told everyone in the room: "This is Nick, the editor this year...and HE owns a LEXUS! Isn't that sad he has a nicer car than all the professors here?"

My sociology teacher one day asked what a couple of us drove...so I told him..."a pearl white/beige '97 Lexus LS400..." He says: "An LS400, eh? That's the top of the line! Your humble professor here can barely afford an Oldsmobile!"

Also

One of my friends just bought an '04 Mazda RX-8, and another friend bought a '97 BMW M3...yet when we're all together at our town's "cruise nights," it seems like everyone is quick to say something to me about "...yeah, well you have a Lexus...lucky punk..."

I work at a Wal-Mart, and when we were in the process of transferring from our old store to the new Supercenter that opened in early March, like five of us at a time had to go to the "new store" for orientation. I told them I would drive when it was my group of five, and they were all like "Awesome, I get to ride in a Lexus!! You're so lucky! yada yada yada..."

It kinda gets annoying...but I've learned to deal with it.

On the contrary, I was driving around the local Nissan dealership the other day killing time, and one of the salesmen approached me while I was driving and asked what I'd take for the car right there on the spot. Then he went on and on about how awesome of shape my car was in for being 11 years old, and I let him crawl around in it (I had just swept, washed, waxed, etc it). He said he'd always wanted a Lexus...about how they command such street presence and are so classy and elegant. But unlike everyone else's comments, I could tell his were sincere and he truly appreciated it for the fine piece of engineering it was, not just because "it's a Lexus, lol..."

THE CURSE OF LEXUS!!!!

You get alot of compliments but you also notice the people who get jelous!!!

If you buy any luxury car you should expect that. After all, in most cases people who buy luxury cars are in a position to afford one. Even the cheapest near luxury car is $30K and that is a lot of money. Most people can't afford a $30K car much less a $40K+ car. I let my wife take our 94 Accord to work now. She is in PR so driving around herself or clients in a simple car can't harm anything but potentially clients can get turned off a bit if you have a nice luxury car.

im actually kind of embarassed sometimes. one time last year i was driving around and i accidentally cut off my teacher in his jeep. the next day in class he gave this speech about suburban kids with their expensive cars and how they act like they're on top of the world =\ stared
right at me and then said '"right Ron and Gabe?" im ron and my friend gabe had a newer f150 on 24's at the time (currently has an a4)...in his situation he was playing music too loud and annoyed the teacher.

not only that--when family or my parents friends come over and they see my car outside they're always saying how lucky i am but inside theyre just saying wow you're spoiled. w/e

in general people do see you differently when you have a car like a lexus--although usually it isn't bad.

lol ron you are spoiled jp i have the same until they see my car and realize its like 1000 years old
