NHTSA Investigates Fire Hazard on 2.7 Million GM Trucks & SUVs
Wednesday, June 18, 2008
Federal regulators have began an investigation into more than 2.7 million SUVs and trucks built by General Motors between 2006 and 2008 after reports of 41 non-crash engine compartment fires, including 8 fires that may have caused significant property damage along with 16 cases where fires started while the vehicles were turned off. The probe covers 21 models sold by Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC and Hummer.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) investigators are currently examining the electrical system, engine and engine cooling system, battery cables, under-hood wiring, fuses and circuit breakers. For the time being, NHTSA calls the probe an "engineering analysis", but this could eventually lead to a recall of all the affected General Motors vehicles.

bummer for GM
just when you thought they are finally doing well and this comes along
On the contrary GM hasn't been improving. They have been losing money since the past three years (2005-2007) and lost money the first three quarter of this year (2008). GM has lost over $50 Billion and they will continue to lose money if they don't get their act together...
Large GM trucks and SUV's are often used for heavy towing. Just speculation here on my part, but perhaps some owners, because of the diesel-locomotive image these vehicles have, may just be trying to tow too much without the proper optional towing packages and overheating the engine and transmission. The electrical components in many American-designed GM products are not of very high quality either, though generally a step or two above that of VW and Mercedes.
