Talking Prediction: in 10 years the majority of cars will be leased...

Although cars have come DOWN in price in the past couple of decades when accounting for inflation and the huge levels of standard equipment today, people also have so many other things competing for their $ than in the past, with high end cell phone plans, broadband, TiVo, and of course, ever increasing TAXES.

Also, cars are getting more and more complex, and with the arrival of more hybrids and coming plug-ins, plus the obsoleting of technology like nav systems and so on, people won't want to keep many cars beyond a few years.

So I predict that more and more people will lease, for two main reasons: 1) spending/financing the money up front to buy will be less appealing, and 2) people will buying knowing they want to trade in 3 to 4 years to get something more up to date.

What do you think?

Well, if gas prices continue to rise, people will drive less.

Lease offers will be beneficial to those that don't drive too often.

I see it happening. Depreciation of vehicles will be outrageous...

It'll probably be especially true for luxury cars too. Since many buyers get them as status symbols, it'll look better if they always have the most current model

I dont know about the majority of cars being leases, but I do agree it makes more sense financially to do so. The reason I think people will still buy cars is because the concept of actually "owning" something means a lot to many people. I have met a lot of people who would never lease because they dont like the feeling of making monthly payments for something they do not own.

Yeah, there will always be the people that have a thing for owning things... ownership has a lot of meaning to many people...

Thats if people can GET into a lease, since that requires better credit and we have seen how the economy is going and the trouble many Americans are having.

However, I do agree with bit here. Also cars change so much more often now by the time you pay it off, its damn near obsolete!!
