i think it might have to do with the fact that the D40x doesn't AF his 50mm...

I wasn't using the 50mm f/1.4, I was using the 18-200mm f/3.5 with VR off.

No, not sand. I got it last week when I got the lens too. But I went back and noticed the spots came on the shots at f/22. Thanks, now I know the problem. Now, why is that?

It's dust on your sensor, it shows up at f22 but not at 2.8. You need to get some sensor swabs to clean the sensor.
First I think you should go to your local camera store and ask them if they can show you how to clean the sensor, and then buy the stuff to keep handy.

I avoid dust on the sensor by turning off the camera, any time I change lenses, keep the backs of your lens covered, and always keep a body cap on when not shooting.

Nice shots on the beach.

That kind of the idea but definitely don't do it outdoors.

Clean room as possible.

And even if you do a sensor swab you can try just a bulb blower by holding the camera upside down so the dust comes out.

It will get the visible stuff.

Much better guide here.

#4 makes you seem so stereotypically Asian that it's not even funny. :p

Neat pics, the smoke is a little disturbing, but maybe that's what you were going for.

Geisel? :uh:

Is #1 you? It's a great pic either way, even though smoking is a terrible thing!

Geisel is the school library here at UCSD.

#1 is a housemate, and it was in the midst of a hookah.

Thanks whoster. Love your shots as well!

Actually, that was with 18-200 VR at ISO 3200.

Do you really think I would carry that monster around all day long at sea world? That would break my neck and then some. :(

Thanks Bit! I figured 2.8 was a bit too low. I didn't realize that until after I took the picture. I may need to play with photoshop a bit more because my purple and blue maglites look too similar straight out of the camera. I will snap another picture tonight taking your advice into consideration
