VW chooses Chattanooga

Defying widespread speculation that the project would land in Alabama, sources in Germany within Volkswagen AG said the world's number three automaker has chosen Chattanooga to help them accomplish it's goal of beating Toyota and becoming the world's biggest automaker, according to Bloomberg.
Chattanooga and state officials are being notified at the time this report is being posted.
Volkswagen is expected to invest up to $1 billion and create 2,000 jobs in Chattanooga when its assembly plant is up and running in 2010 at Enterprise South Industrial Park.
A site recently annexed by Huntsville in Limestone County was competing against Chattanooga and a site in Michigan for the plant.
Germany media reports said VW plans to manufacture up to 300,000 vehicles per year by 2018. Plans are to make a new version of the Jetta, as well as a new sedan that could be a smaller version of the Passat. Plans are also being considered for an Audi sedan and possibly an SUV that could carry the Porsche brand label.
Chattanooga and Hamilton County public works employees, as well as private contractors have been working at a feverish pace since the spring to clear, level and prepare a 1,055-acre site at Enterprise South for a large manufacturer like Volkswagen.
In May, VW reps along with top business and political leaders met at U.S. Senator Bob Corker's house in north Chattanooga. Company reps have also made trips to the Scenic City to explore the local lifestyle and outdoor scenes.
