Automakers spend lots of time and money designing, redesigning and test marketing their new vehicles to make certain they'll capture a potential buyer's imagination. It doesn't always work. We asked you just days ago if new cars were getting uglier and there was no real consensus, but one look at this list of the top ten ugliest new cars sold in the United States may tip the scales in favor of uglier. Hit the jump to see them all and make sure to vote in the poll so we can determine which one's truly ugliest. Don't see an undeserving car? Add it to the list.
10. 2009 Honda Pilot

* Honda Pilot
* Honda Pilot
* Honda Pilot

We like the 2009 Honda Pilot, we really do. If seven-passenger SUVs were our thing, the Pilot would be at the top of our list. The only thing holding us back would the be styling, which manages to be both boring and ugly at the same time, making it ugling... or borgly. Depending on the viewing angle you're either unimpressed with it or terrified.
9. 2009 Acura TL

* 2009 Acura TL
* 2009 Acura TL
* 2009 Acura TL

The 2009 Acura TL doesn't go on sale for a few months and we already don't like those looks. Successive generations of Acuras are getting worse, reminding us a time when their cars actually had names (Legend, Integra) and actually had style. The TL is a Transformer frozen forever in a transformation from an attractive sedan to a particularly unattractive cheese grater.
8. 2008 Chevy Uplander

* Uplander3
* Uplander1
* Uplander2

We wouldn't blame you if you didn't know that Chevy still made minivans since, given how awful their Uplander looks, the company seems to be keeping it a pretty good secret. It's all in the face. maybe it's the influence of Cars, but we tend to see cars as faces and the Uplander looks like a fat guy who realized he just swallowed a stapler. It's so awful looking that, in the press shots, they suggest alternative transportation. We'll take a 1991 Silhouette instead.

7. 2009 Nissan Murano

* Murano1
* Murano2
* Murano3

The 2009 Nissan Murano was designed with the intention of capturing a "modern art" feel. What they ended up with was a design that's the kind of modern art that gives ammunition to legislators trying to cut funding for the National Endowment of the Arts. An otherwise shapely profile is destroyed by loafer-shaped headlights surrounding a grille that looks like the angry smile of poorly rendered alien villain.
6. 2009 Toyota Venza

* Toyota Venza
* Toyota Venza
* Toyota Venza

Instead of just making a Camry wagon, which is what the world really needs, Toyota decided to make the Venza crossover. We think someone actually drew a Camry wagon and then someone came along with a huge ball of silly putty and stretched it until it was no longer recognizable.
5. 2008 Jeep Compass Rallye

* Jeep Compass
* Jeep Compass
* Jeep Compass

The Jeep Compass was apparently designed to appeal to women, which may explain why it looks like a fetus. From the huge grille to the almost comically mismatched panels, it's one of the few cars that looks like a Chinese knock-off of itself.
4. 2008 Subaru Impreza Sedan

* Subaru Impreza 2.5 Sedan
* Subaru Impreza 2.5 Sedan
* Subaru Impreza 2.5 Sedan

The design of the 2008 WRX STI hatch isn't our favorite, but it manages to capture the rally heritage and weird-aru look of most Subies. The base model Impreza, on the other hand, is purposeless and wimpy. It's as if you suddenly took all the body armor off of a knight — you're basically left with a hairy naked Prussian dude.
3. 2008 Chrysler Sebring Convertible

* Chrysler Sebring Convertible
* Chrysler Sebring Convertible
* Chrysler Sebring Convertible

Creating a hardtop convertible version of a four-door car requires making tough decisions, in the case of the Chrysler Sebring we were sort of hoping they'd be able to diminish the features that made the sedan so unappealing. Not so much. Somehow the hood strakes seem deeper, the headlights more misshapen and the profile more hunchbacked on the drop-top version.
2. 2008 Toyota Prius

* 2008 Toyota Pius
* 2008 Toyota Pius
* 2008 Toyota Pius

We don't mind cars that combine form and function, but the entire purpose of the Toyota Prius' sheet metal seems to prove the driver has such a strong commitment to the environment they'll be seen in something so awkward looking. The body is designed to reduce drag and increase efficiency, which is great, but the Tatra T87 has the same basic shape and a sub-.024 cD without looking an appliance. Here are some ladies of the booth in front of one so yo don't have to avert your eyes.
1. 2009 Ford Focus

* 2009 Ford Focus Sedan
* 2009 Ford Focus Sedan
* 2009 Ford Focus Sedan

As much as we loved the original Ford Focus when it debuted, and as often as we pine for the Euro Focus, the US focus has gotten perpetually worse in the looks department. That was in 2008. For 2009 Ford Focus randomly added curves, lines, bulges and spoilers until we wished the once becoming Focus would soon be going.

Murano is not that bad in my opinion.

I would have BMW 6-series, Mercedes-Benz CLS, Toyota Prius, Chrysler Sebring convertible, Chrysler PT Cruiser, Jeep Compass, Saab 9-5, Smart Fortwo, Dodge Caliber, and Honda Pilot(2009) as my own 10 ugliest car of 2008/2009.

The Corolla can't be too ugly, they're selling the hell out of them. I dont like the way the Chevy Aveo or Cobalt looks nor the Pontiac G5

There's way uglier cars than that list..

Ford Fusion looks like the last gen prelude with braces

Chevy HHR, looks like the PT Ugly with a terrible plastic surgery attempt to make it prettier.

Mitsubishi Eclipse looks like the designer for the Evolution X lost his ruler and decided to draw with a compass

Totally agree. Many vehicles have also declined in other ways since the 1990's, not just in looks. They use thinner, cheaper materials.

The U.S. Ford Focus is an abomination...why they don't bring the Euro Focus here I will never understand. They had it when I was down in Mexico and it looks 10 times better than the one here, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Focus_%28Europe%29

I don't agree with the Prius or the Focus. The Impreza is god awful. They had better refresh that good if they want my money. The PT cruiser isn't on the list? What gives?

Oh and I woulda put all the Acura sedans on there.

Acura sedans? Yes and no. Some of their new grilles are awful, but overall they aren't too bad in the looks department.

The PT Cruiser was deliberately designed to be something radically different from the typical Wagon/SUV fold. Its styling was meant to recapture the late 1930's gangster look,............which it does, to some extent, particularly in the rear.

I agree the new Impreza's body, especially in the 5-door hatchback, leaves a bit to be desired, but the Impreza, IMO, has never been a truly good-looking car to start with, and most of its owners don't buy it for its looks. The Impreza's real beauty shines under the sheet metal, where it has some of the best mechanicals and AWD systems in the industry. The new interior, yes, has a lot of hard plastic, but it is good-looking, thick, durable plastic, not cheap dime-store stuff like, say, the rival Dodge Caliber. If I, myself, were spending less than 20-21K on a new car, the Impreza would be my first choice, hands-down.

I beg to differ on the looks of the Impreza in recent years. The only ugly one in my mind was the pig-nose grille one which lasted only a few years.

I'd argue that as long as it has a Toyota badge on it and gets good gas mileage, it will sell.

Believe it or not the pig nose was my favorite. I don't know why. It just did it for me more than the bugeyes. My brother had an '01 RS. Very attractive, black leather with red stitching, carbon fiber inside and out. However, the plastic inside was kind of shotty, thus I hung on to my Legacy which is very well put together. No rattles!

In my posts, I myself didn't infer that Imprezas were dreadfully ugly. I was responding to SLegacy99's assertion that the new 2008 Impeza's looks was awful (and he certainly has a right to that view). I countered by saying that, while not the ugliest car out there by any means, I didn't think that Imprezas, in general, over the years, were particularly good-lookers. Yet, underneath the so-so sheet metal, IMO, lurks one of the best compact cars on the planet. And I'll repeat here what I said in the last post.....for 20K or less, that would be my choice for a new car, hands-down.

Oh yeah 6-series's front end looks like the head of a whale, which I don't find attractive. CLS's downward trunk and headlights are way too ugly for my eyes, I can't believe S-class and CLS-class belong to the same company.

That, of course, will depend on if Ford is willing to do the time and expense of certifying it to American specs. You have to remember that you can't just load up vehicles on the boat and ship them over here. They have to meet American safety and emissions standards....and the testing/certifying process, of course, costs money.

I actually think the S-class is ugly from certain angles, especially the rear, and the only part I like about the car's design is the front end.
Overall I think the CLS is sexier.

Granted, the Rogue has an unattractive, Plain-Jane interior, but, IMO, it's not as ugly on the outside as the Murano. I don't know what the Nissan stylists were thinking when they came up with the Murano.

I am sure CLS is a great machine to drive, but as far as the look.....I have seen a lowered black CLS AMG with 20" rims and all dark tinted class, still thought "what an ugly expensive car". I like S-class, C-class, and SL-class, that's it about M-B.

CLS is sick.

The CLS looks like an upside-down bowl that went part-way through a vertical crusher and got stuck. While everyone's tastes differ, of course (Car and Driver magazine called it gorgeous), I certainly can't call this car attractive. And have you actually tried to look OUT of those peep-hole windows?

I said to my son how ugly the Murano is and my son said the driver just held the door open for me. STILL UGLY and so is the FX that is similar.

I loved my Prius shape and all at the NY car show I admired its beauty.
I had a 2004

FORD FLEX (this is an abortion) one ugly gas guzzler 19 mpg saw it at the dealer. I had to get parts for a business vehicle.

Most Fords are ugly.

The Toyota Venza I got to see it in person to comment.
