July 4cast: Another Dismal Month for Vehicle Sales Except Honda & Compact Vehicles (http://www.autoobserver.com/2008/07/july-forecast-another-dismal-month-for-vehicle-sales---except-for-honda-and-compact-vehicles.html#more)
July 29, 2008

By Michelle Krebs

One doesn't need to be a fortuneteller gazing into a crystal ball to figure out that July vehicle sales, to be reported by automakers on Friday, continue to be in the tank. All one has to do is read recent headlines of downgraded 2008 sales forecasts, more production cuts and boosted incentives.

Edmunds.com released its July forecast Tuesday, predicting monthly sales will drop 10.7 percent from last July, adjusted for the difference in the number of selling days. The decrease is estimated at 3.3 percent on an unadjusted basis. Despite some last-ditch incentive efforts to save the month, all of the Big Six auto manufacturers, with the exception of Honda, are expected to report sales declines from a year ago. Similarly, sales of small compact vehicles continued to boom.

Even the venerable Toyota is likely to see another drop. Meantime, the combined market share of Detroit's three automakers is expected to hit a near-record low of 44.4 percent, down from 49.4 percent in July 2007 and from 46.4 percent in June 2008. The only time it was lower was in May when it fell to 44.3 percent.

"The combined market share for compact cars, compact trucks and compact SUVs is near its all-time high," observed Jesse Toprak, executive director of Industry Analysis for Edmunds.com. "We expect these three segments to make up around 35 percent of the total market in July, compared to just 23 percent in July of 2003."

Company-by-Company Forecast
In total, Edmunds.com forecasts July new vehicle sales (including fleet sales) to come in at 1.26 million units, a 3.3-percent decrease from July 2007 and a 6.3-percent increase from June 2008 on an unadjusted basis. July 2008 had 26 selling days, two more than last July 2007. When adjusted for this difference, sales decreased 10.7 percent from July 2007.

Edmunds.com forecasts the following sales results:
Chrysler will sell 117,000 units in July 2008, down 14.8 percent compared to July 2007 and up 0.2 percent from June 2008. This would result in a new-vehicle market share of 9.3 percent for Chrysler in July 2008, down from 10.6 percent in July 2007 and down from 9.9 percent in June 2008.

Ford will sell 176,000 units in July 2008, down 7.4 percent compared to July 2007 and up 3.1 percent from June 2008. This would result in a new-vehicle market share of 14.0 percent of new car sales in July 2008 for Ford, down from 14.6 percent in July 2007 and down slightly from 14.4 percent in June 2008.

GM will sell 266,000 units in July 2008, down 15.7 percent compared to July 2007 and up 1.3 percent from June 2008. GM's market share is expected to be 21.1 percent of new-vehicle sales in July 2008, down from 24.2 percent in July 2007 and down from 22.2 percent in June 2008.

Honda will sell 160,000 units in July 2008, up 13.3 percent from July 2007 and up 12.1 percent from June 2008. Honda's market share is expected to be 12.7 percent in July 2008, up from 10.8 percent in July 2007 and up from 12.0 percent in June 2008.

Nissan will sell 88,000 units in July 2008, up 0.2 percent from July 2007 and up 16.0 percent from June 2008. Nissan's market share is expected to be 7.0 percent in July 2008, up from 6.7 percent in July 2007 and up from 6.4 percent in June 2008.

Toyota will sell 217,000 units in July 2008, down 3.3 percent from July 2007 and up 12.1 percent from June 2008. Toyota's market share is expected to be 17.2 percent in July 2008, even from 17.2 percent in July 2007 and up from 16.3 percent in June 2008.

Last-Ditch Efforts Don't Save the Month

Some automakers signaled another weak sales month with enhanced incentives intended to end the month on a higher note and further production cuts to better position them going forward.

At the ribbon cutting for a new powertrain center, GM CEO Rick Wagoner signaled July sales would look similar to sales in June when GM reported at 15-percent decline from the year earlier.

In an effort to push month-end sales, GM said last week it would offer employee discounts to non-employees on a limited basis. GM employees can give one employee discount away through the end of July. That is in addition to already richened discount programs in effect.

Ford has been offering employee-financing to clear out its inventory of 2008 Ford F-Series pickups to make way for the new model, the introduction for which has been pushed into later fall.

On Monday, GM announced would slash another 117,000 SUVs and trucks from its upcoming production schedule. The automaker will eliminate shifts - and 1,760 jobs -- at truck plants in Moraine, Ohio, and Shreveport, La., which make trucks and SUVs. GM's goal is to cut a total of 300,000 units of truck and SUV capacity by year-end.

Also on Monday, Toyota announced a downward revision to its global sales forecast due to its lower sales in the U.S. Toyota recently said it would cut back its production of Tundra pickup trucks and Sequoia SUVs. At the same time, the Japanese automaker has opted to build the Prius hybrid at its new Mississippi plant instead of the Highlander SUV.

Chrysler announced last week that it would extend no-interest financing for six years to its Jeep Commander and Cherokee, Chrysler Aspen and Dodge Durango SUVs through month-end. It's the same deal Chrysler is offering on 2008 Dodge pickup trucks to clear inventory for the redesigned 2009 Ram. At the same time, however, Chrysler said it would no longer offer leasing through Chrysler Financial as of Aug. 1.

Honda Bucks Sales Trend But Struggles with Profits
As it has throughout the year, Honda is expected to buck the industry trend and report a gain in sales, according to Edmunds.com's forecast.

In June, Honda surpassed Chrysler to become the nation's fourth-largest automaker and it is closing in on Ford for the No. 3 spot. Last month, Honda's market share was 12%, less than three percentage points behind Ford's 14.6%. Last summer, Ford was 7 percentage points ahead of Honda, which sold nearly 100,000 more cars than Ford in the first six months of this year.

And Honda is prepping to produce and sell even more cars in the second half and into 2009. In September, Honda begins producing the hot-selling Civic, which was the nation's No. 1 selling vehicle in May, at its new plant in Greensburg, Ind. The plant has capacity to build 200,000 Civics a year.

But Honda has its struggles as well. The automaker recently said it would cut the production of its Honda Odyssey minivan and its newly redesigned Pilot SUV due to slow sales. And Honda's success --- and thus heavy dependence -- in the U.S., however, is a mixed blessing. Honda relies on North America for 70 percent of its operating profit, which is being hurt by currency exchange rates. To that end, Honda, which reported an unexpected higher profit in the just-ended quarter, cut its full-year operating profit last week. That caused Honda's stock to fall nearly 3 percent, the biggest drop since June 19, according to Bloomberg News.

Honda is doing great with the Civic and CR-V. They know how to attact the masses with both; they can attact both ricers and soccer moms, and still provide a very functional product for everyone else.

Toyota can also attract ricers and soccer moms too. I think their sales are declining not because they dont make great vehicles, but more because they have A LOT of vehicles to choose from. When you have that many vehicles (especially SUVs), you're bound to sell less during the time like this. Not everyone wants SUVs and trucks so Toyota's sales will decline over the previous years. For Honda, their SUVs and truck never sold so you dont see a decline at all:D

VW Moves Ahead of Ford in 2008 (http://www.egmcartech.com/2008/07/30/volkswagen-moves-ahead-of-ford-in-2008/)

Posted: July 30th, 2008

Volkswagen reported a 7.2 percent increase to 3.31 million cars and trucks, putting it a ahead of Ford as the world’s third-largest automaker by vehicle sales in the first of 2008. FoMoCo sales fell a total of 11 percent to 3.09 million. Ford lost its no.2 spot to Toyota in 2003.

Due to a significant drop in pickups and SUVs and high gas-prices Ford’s U.S. sales fell 14 percent. Its reporting excluded the sale of Jaguar and Land Rover to Tata Motors.

Toyota moved ahead of GM in worldwide sales during the first half of 2008. Global production increased 1% to 741,873 units in June. However, the Japanese automaker dropped its 2008 sales outlook to 9.5 million vehicles from 9.85 million.

It was a joke. I'm referring to the Ridgeline and Pilot (redesigned) :) I'm well aware of the CR-V's sales. It's a hit for most consumers. Reasonably priced, good fuel economy, good amount of space to work with, and enough power to get moving in the city.

Ford Focus Continues to Surprise, Outpace Segment
Friday August 1, 12:00 pm ET
- Ford Focus sales were up 16 percent in July and 26 percent year-to-date.
- Total car sales up 8 percent.
- Consistent with industry trends, crossover sales in July were down 8 percent, sport utilities were down 54 percent, and trucks and vans were down 18 percent.

DEARBORN, Mich., Aug. 1 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Ford's (NYSE: F - News) redesigned Focus continues to surprise auto industry watchers and customers alike with strong sales, revenue growth, fuel economy and industry-first technology.

While Ford and industry sales experienced a double-digit sales decline in July, Ford Focus sales climbed 16 percent versus a year ago. Year-to-date, Focus sales were up 26 percent, compared with industry-wide small car growth of approximately 9 percent.

Focus has surprised in areas other than sales:

-- Transaction prices - Year-to-date, Focus transaction prices have increased $750 per unit compared with a segment-average increase of $100. Customers are purchasing more equipment, including Ford SYNC, and higher series levels.

-- Fuel Economy - In an independent test conducted by Edmunds.com called the Gas-Sipper Smackdown, Focus achieved 37.5 mpg on the highway. Focus has EPA highway fuel economy of 35 mpg -- better than the smaller 2008 Honda Fit and 2009 Nissan Versa SL.

-- Cool Technology - Focus was named one of Kelley Blue Book's 10 Coolest New Cars Under $18,000 based on its safety, fuel economy, interior size, comfort, technology, fun-to-drive and the "decidedly subjective coolness factor."

"Focus continues to surprise and delight customers throughout the country, but the bombshell is in Texas, where Focus retail sales have almost doubled," said Jim Farley, Ford, group vice president, Marketing and Communications. "If we can increase small car sales in Texas, we can increase them anywhere." Year-to-date, Focus retail sales were up 91 percent in Texas and 46 percent nationwide.

Total Ford, Lincoln and Mercury car sales were up 8 percent compared with a year ago. Consistent with industry trends, crossover vehicles -- which include Ford Escape, Edge and Flex -- were down 8 percent. Sport utility vehicles -- such as Ford Explorer and Expedition -- were down 54 percent, and trucks and vans -- including Ford F-Series and Econoline -- were down 18 percent.

Overall, Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicle sales totaled 156,406 in July, down 13 percent versus a year ago; year-to-date sales totaled 1.265 million, also down 14 percent. Ford estimates industry-wide sales were down 11 percent year-to-date.

"We expect the second half of 2008 will be more challenging than the first half as economic and credit conditions weaken," said Farley.

Ford's full-year industry sales forecast is a range from 14.0 - 14.5 million vehicles (including medium and heavy trucks). The first half sales rate was approximately 15 million.

Note: The sales data included in this release and the accompanying tables are based largely on data reported by dealers representing their sales to retail and fleet customers.

Honda New Car Models Lead Gain in Japan Vehicle Sales (Update2)

By Makiko Kitamura
Enlarge Image/Details

Aug. 1 (Bloomberg) -- Honda Motor Co., Japan's second- biggest carmaker, led a rise in domestic auto sales in July, after its new models spurred demand.

Sales of cars, trucks and buses rose 5.4 percent to 302,568 from a year earlier, the Japan Automobile Dealers Association said in a statement today. The total excludes minicars.

Toyota Motor Corp., Japan's largest carmaker, and Honda are introducing new and revamped models to lure buyers to showrooms as higher gas prices and decade-high inflation squeeze consumer spending in Japan. Toyota brought out the Alphard and Vellfire minivans while Honda unveiled the Freed in May.

``The new models may provide a quick boost to sales,'' said Takashi Aoki, who helps manage about 130 billion yen at Mizuho Asset Management Co. in Tokyo. ``But the effect won't last.''

Honda gained 29 percent to 40,449 units. Nissan reported a 5.9 percent sales increase to 50,098 vehicles, while Toyota's increased 5.6 percent last month to 139,669.

There was one extra selling day last month compared with last year. Also, sales last year fell after an earthquake disrupted production.

Toyota, Honda, Mazda Motor Corp. and Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. have all introduced minivans in the past three months to boost sales.

Still, auto sales, including minicars, will likely fall 1.2 percent this year for a fourth consecutive decline to about 5.32 million units, according to the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association.

Spending, Inflation

Japan's household spending has fallen for four straight months through June as inflation stays at a decade-high, boosted by soaring costs of food and energy.

Toyota fell 1.1 percent to 4,610 yen on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. Honda lost 0.3 percent to 3,480 yen, while Nissan fell 1.4 percent to 828 yen.

High gasoline prices have also deterred transport and tour companies from buying new trucks and buses. Truck sales fell 18 percent to 33,615 units in July. Bus sales dropped 15 percent to 1,228 units.

Sales of minicars, powered by engines no larger than 0.66 liters were little changed at 152,026 units last month, according to the Japan Mini Vehicles Association.

Daihatsu Motor Co., Japan's largest minicar maker, increased sales 6.5 percent to 52,235. Suzuki Motor Corp., the country's second-largest minicar maker, sold 48,785 units, up 1.5 percent.

OMG!! Volvo is down 46%!!! They only sold 5k units last month, that is dismal!

One of its biggest sellers (S60) has been on the market unchanged since 2000. The one thing I do not like about Volvo is that they do not update there vehicles nearly enough. Their sales always fluctuate greatly because of this.

But it could be a supply issue as well. Thats a HUGE drop for all of its vehicles. I dont think it was nearly as bad the past few months. ANd they make pretty fuel efficient cars as well.

Audi of America Reports July Sales

- Audi expects to increase market share despite a decrease in
month-to-month sales
- CPO sales are up again
- Audi A3, A6, A8 sales up

HERNDON, Va., Aug. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Audi of America, Inc. announced
today auto sales for the month of July totaling 6,804, a decrease of 4.5%

on better overall performance versus the luxury segment average. Audi
Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) sales continued to grow with another
record-setting month; compared with last year's July figures, CPO sales
rose to 2,669 units, an increase of 21.2%.

"Despite the negative pace of sales across the industry, Audi continues

German-engineered vehicles that deliver strong fuel economy performance."

Nationwide, Audi sales of three models were up, demonstrating continued
excitement around the brand, which has seen consistent movement throughout
2008: sales of the A3 jumped by 30.5%, and the A6 and A8 grew 14% and 2%,
respectively.

Audi continues to impress industry analysts and other third-party
industry watchers. J.D. Power and Associates', the respected industry
organization that measures, among other things, quality within the auto
industry, recently noted that Audi posted the greatest ranking improvement
in initial quality during the 2008 J.D. Power Initial Quality Survey.

Mazda Reports July 2008 Sales, Small Cars Lead the Way

MAZDA3 Continues Its Hot Streak, Reports Best July Ever

IRVINE, Calif., Aug. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Mazda North American Operations
(MNAO) today reported July 2008 sales of 22,418 vehicles, a 13.3 percent
decrease over last year. Year-to-date, Mazda reports 175,559 vehicles sold,

Except for the LX, every LExus is down!
Audi not bad, the A4 is about to be replaced and is selling like a new model. All their cars are up. What killed them was Q7 sales, which was a volume leader and now down 50%.

The LX 570 sold more than the Navigator, i'm not sure what to say about that. The Ford Flex and Honda Pilot seems to be struggling. It's nice to see sales of the Mazda 5 up it's a functional vehicle though it's third row is useless in my family. I wonder how the upcoming Toyota Venza will fair in the market.

Wow Infiniti with an all new cute ute is down. The M35/45 actually sold under 1000 units for the first time. I am surprised the G35 sedan sales are down 19%, its lowest priced in class with the lowest lease prices and its a good package.

NIssan up 10%!! That is a big deal. The Sentra/Versa is a good 2 small car combo and the Cube is coming. The Altima is now a fav here and the new Maxima is here.

Hyundai Motor America Reports July Sales

Last update: 2:25 p.m. EDT Aug. 1, 2008
FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., Aug 01, 2008 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Hyundai Motor America today announced sales of 40,703 for the month of July, a 6.5 percent decrease over the same period last year.
"Although Accent and Elantra sales continued their upward trend with increases of 96 percent and 31 percent respectively over the same period last year, we experienced an overall slow down for the month of July," said Dave Zuchowski, Hyundai Motor America's vice president of national sales. "We are encouraged going forward, however, due to the fact we have recently opened a new four-cylinder engine plant in Montgomery, Alabama, allowing us to shift our engine mix for future product. We also expect greater availability of our more-fuel efficient vehicles in the months to come and the demand for our new rear-wheel drive Genesis to continue to rise."
All Hyundai vehicles sold in the U.S. are covered by The Hyundai Advantage, America's Best Warranty. Hyundai buyers are protected by a 10-year/100,000-mile power train warranty, a 5-year/60,000-mile bumper-to- bumper warranty, a 7-year/unlimited-mile anti-perforation warranty and 5- year/unlimited-mile roadside assistance protection.
Hyundai Motor America, headquartered in Fountain Valley, Calif., is a subsidiary of Hyundai Motor Co. of Korea. Hyundai vehicles are distributed throughout the United States by Hyundai Motor America and are sold and serviced through almost 800 dealerships nationwide.

Wow, LS vs. S-Class, first time I remember seeing the S-Class ahead by about 110 units. The LS still leads the S-Class for the year however. Lexus could use some new models and perhaps more engine selections for this tough environment...

Lexus is going to have to put up with the LS longer than MB has to go with the S. And the new 7 will be here this year. You could see over the last several months that the decline in the S sales were less than the LS on a percentage basis. I can't talk myself into MB reliability but I have to admit I notice the S on the road, especially from the rear but the LS already just looks like one of the herd. Obviously, there are those that will post that that is exactly what they want from their LS, great for them. But I wouldn't expect the LS sales numbers to reverse their trend anytime soon. Bimmer is cutting great deals on the outgoing 7, may be starting to run into supply issues, but when the new 7 is out, I expect it will pass the LS as well.

Before it gets overlooked, kudos to Caddy. The CTS is looking like they hit one out of the park. Good for them. It won't save the General but still, good for them.

BMW Group US sales (BMW and MINI combined) up 2.2 percent in July.

WOODCLIFF LAKE, N.J., Aug. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- The BMW Group in the U.S.
(BMW and MINI combined) reported July sales of 28,977 vehicles, an increase
of 2.2 percent over the 28,364 vehicles sold in July 2007. The BMW Group
also reported its year-to-date sales volume of 186,890 vehicles, down 3.0
percent compared to 192,702 vehicles in the same period of 2007.

BMW Brand Sales

Sales of BMW brand vehicles dropped slightly by 1.6 percent to 23,914
compared to 24,295 units in the same month a year ago. Year-to-date BMW
brand sales are down 8 percent to 155,427 vehicles, compared to 168,874
vehicles sold in first seven months of 2007.

"While we see the premium segment being affected by the same economic
conditions as the mainstream market, there continue to be less dramatic
consequences in this segment," said Jim O'Donnell, President of BMW of
North America, LLC, commenting on BMW brand sales. "Buyers of our vehicles
are still shopping and purchasing but are even more discerning to choose
for long-term quality and value. In light of our corporate results
announced today, we are going to strengthen our focus on profitability over
the next 12 to 18 months by keeping the supply of vehicles in close
alignment with demand, which in turn increases our pricing flexibility and
brand value. Actions we are already taking include shifting our customer
programs in our dealerships to achieve a more equitable balance of retail
financing to leasing, further emphasizing the benefits of our four-year
free maintenance program, and further developing our Certified Pre-Owned
business to aid residual values."

BMW Automobile Sales

BMW's automobile sales are up 0.9 percent in July to 19,261 versus
19,083 in the same month a year ago. Year-to-date sales are down 7.3
percent, to 122,783 automobiles compared to 132,478 in the same period of
2007.

BMW Sports Activity Vehicle Sales

Sales of BMW Sports Activity Vehicles decreased by 10.7 percent in July
to 4,653 vehicles versus 5,212 sold last July. Year-to-date, sales of BMW
Sports Activity Vehicles are down 10.3 percent, to 32,644 vehicles compared
to the 36,396 sold in the first seven months of 2007.

MINI Brand Sales

In July MINI USA reported sales of 5,063 automobiles, a strong increase
of 24.4 percent, from the 4,069 cars sold in July 2007. Year-to-date, the
division reports sales of 31,463 automobiles, an increase of 32 percent,
compared to the 23,828 cars reported in the first seven months of 2007.

"Again this month, we continue to watch a very large movement from
larger to smaller vehicles. From the increased traffic in our dealerships,
we are seeing desires to downsize but not downscale," said Jim McDowell,
Vice-President MINI USA. "Over the last month, our MINI sales have also
seen on average $4-5,000 of options in a typical sale. Therefore, at least
in the premium end of the small car market, small size is not equating to
small dollar sales."

AUBURN HILLS, Mich., Aug. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Chrysler LLC today reported
total July 2008 U.S. sales of 98,109 units, which is 29 percent below the
same period last year. Total July sales reflect a continued contraction of
the market of pickup trucks and SUV sales and reductions in fleet sales.
The company's recently completed 'Let's Refuel America $2.99 Gas Guarantee'
promotion boosted showroom traffic and helped sales of Chrysler's newest
highly fuel-efficient vehicles throughout the three-month program period.
All sales figures are reported as unadjusted.

"We are writing a new chapter in the auto industry story as customers,
dealers and companies adjust to a changing environment," Jim Press,
Chrysler LLC Vice Chairman and President, said. "There are many changes
taking place that give us at the new Chrysler cause for optimism. In the
short term, our 2009 model year vehicles with value packages will soon be
arriving in dealerships, and our August incentive packages are the best
deals of the year, helping to make owning as affordable as leasing. Within
the product lineup, our leadership in minivans is well-timed as consumers
look for fuel-efficient alternatives to larger SUVs. Two new fuel-saving
hybrid SUVs, the Dodge Durango and Chrysler Aspen, will be soon hitting the
streets. The Dodge Journey and Jeep Patriot are gaining more customers on
the appeal of fuel efficiency and affordability. And the success of cars
like the Dodge Avenger, Charger and Challenger shows that customers still
want their cars to stand out from the crowd. Lastly, this fall we come to
market with our best new pickup truck ever -- the 2009 Dodge Ram."

July Highlights

The Chrysler Town & Country posted a 24 percent increase with 8,070
sales versus July 2007 sales of 6,513 units. With room for seven
passengers, and the industry-exclusive Swivel 'n Go(TM) seating system, the
Chrysler Town & Country could be considered as a fuel-efficient alternative
to a full-sized SUV. Town & Country sales in July helped drive total
minivan sales up 5 percent. Total long-wheel-base minivan retail sales
increased 21 percent in July.

The Jeep(R) Patriot continues to gain traction in the market, offering
excellent fuel economy, interior flexibility and utility at a great value.
Total sales of 3,451 were up 4 percent versus last year due to consumer
interest in the company's most fuel-efficient vehicles. Additionally, Jeep
Patriot 2008 year-to-date sales increased 119 percent, with 40,135 total
sales when compared with July 2007 year-to-date sales of 18,286 units.

Response to sales promotions of the Dodge Ram helped lesson the impact
of slow pickup truck demand. Dodge Ram pickup sales were down 27 percent
(21,328 units) versus 2007 sales of 29,312, but sales increased 32 percent
when compared with June 2008 sales of 16,149 units.

The Dodge Avenger sedan continued with good performance with 4,318
units sold, up 2 percent when compared with July 2007 sales of 4,213.

The highly anticipated all-new Dodge Challenger SRT8(R) hit the streets
in July with excitement and solid sales results (2,895 units sold). The
return of the iconic Dodge Challenger combines unmistakable design cues
reminiscent of the original Challenger with world-class performance making
it the hottest vehicle on the streets this summer. In total, 3,990 Dodge
Challengers have been delivered to customers.

The Company finished the month with 409,331 units of inventory, or a
108-day supply. As part of a planned reduction in manufacturing and
capacity, inventory is down 12 percent compared with July 2007 when it
totaled 464,875 units.

You're right, I should have looked a bit more. Just seems like the S class has been out for a longer period of time even though I think it actually looks fresher. If MB keeps the sales lead, they will simply be better positioned to continue with the more expensive current S. The new 7 should make life a bit more complicated for both of them.

Oh wait, that was TRD's response to Toyota's sales being down...

I don't know if it is all about supplies, I went with my sister to look for civics and had no problem finding them, some dealers had $3000 mark-ups, I think that might be more of a reason of lower sales

TRDFantasy

So Honda sales were down this month too, as were Hyundai sales. All the major automakers were DOWN. It's quite likely Honda was supply-constrained on some of their models, but Toyota is in the same situation. The Prius is extremely supply-constrained, and the Corolla and Yaris are also tight in supply. Honda and Toyota had similar supply issues for the month, but the Corolla still outsold the Civic by quite a margin. Where are all of those that were saying the Civic would overtake the Corolla or become best-selling vehicle in the U.S? Never underestimate the selling point of the Corolla's best-in-class fuel economy, especially under current market conditions (high fuel prices).

As for the LS ... disappointing I must say. I am also going to say it's unacceptable that LS sales have dropped so much. I think Lexus, at least on the LS, needs to offer better lease deals. The lease deals available on the S-Class and 7 absolutely blow away the lease deals offered on the LS. Under current market conditions, premium luxury large sedans are being hit hard. S-Class and 7 sales are not dropping as much as the LS thanks to incredible lease deals. On top of lease deals, Lexus REALLY needs to offer AWD on the LS460 and 460L. People for years have been asking for AWD on the LS, as well as some other Lexus models. Hopefully Toyota is listening, and the rumours of AWD being added to the 2009 LS460 and 460L are true. Finally, with the LS being the Lexus flagship, more options, accessories, and customization must be offered.

Toyota is not Honda or any other automaker. They are not going to forget about the LS or let it wither on a vine and die. Hopefully Toyota addresses the LS situation soon.

On a side-note, C-Class sales continue to be incredible. Also impressive is how solid IS sales continue to be.

I may end up buying a Jag xf. They are very willing to deal on a brand new model.

Man you need to come out to Cali. Carsdirect, which can be beaten by quite a bit, will get you at least $6K off an LS out here. Even with the deals I can get on an A8, 7, and S, I can get an LS for a lot less. I just don't want an LS.

GM Reports 235,184 Deliveries in July

Chevrolet Malibu total sales up 79 Percent, Aveo up 17 percent and Cobalt up 4 percent compared with last July
Cadillac CTS sales increased 38 percent
Pontiac G5 sales up 17 percent, Vibe up 7 percent and G6 up 6 percent
Saturn Aura sales increased 24 percent with Sky up 14 percent, Astra has best month
Buick Enclave mid-utility crossover sales increase 28 percent

DETROIT – GM today announced July sales results, highlighted by continued strong performance in small and midsize cars and crossovers. GM dealers in the United States delivered 235,184 vehicles in July, down 26.7 percent. Weak industry conditions caused by a challenging U.S. economic environment, higher fuel prices and inventory shortages in critical segments such as compact cars contributed to the overall sales decline for the month.

“In July, we saw strong performance once again in our launch products, including the Cadillac CTS, Chevrolet Malibu, Saturn Astra, and Pontiac Vibe and G8. In addition, we continued to see strong retail demand for our fuel efficient Chevrolet Aveo and HHR, Saturn Vue and Buick Enclave. So, despite an overall weak market, there are pockets of strength,” said Mark LaNeve, vice president, GM North America Vehicle Sales, Service and Marketing. “Obviously, the weakness in the truck market persisted in July, yet we continue to hold share due to our fuel economy leadership in many truck segments despite dramatic competitive incentive spending increases.” Overall, GM truck sales in July declined 41.5 percent.

Chevrolet cars continued to show strength in the marketplace with Malibu total sales up 79 Percent, Aveo up 17 percent and Cobalt up 4 percent compared with last July.

Cadillac CTS dominated the mid-car luxury category with sales increasing 38 percent compared with the same month a year ago.

Pontiac met consumers’ needs for fuel efficient vehicles with a performance edge with G5 sales up 17 percent, Vibe up 7 percent and G6 up 6 percent compared with July 2007.

Saturn’s award-winning Aura midsize car saw a sales increase of 24 percent with the two-seat Sky selling 14 percent more vehicles than July last year. Astra monthly sales of more than 1,500 vehicles were the best to date, and show a 75 percent increase compared with June 2008 (Astra was not available last July).

GM’s popular midsized crossovers -- Buick Enclave, GMC Acadia and Saturn Outlook -- together accounted for more than 11,600 vehicle sales in the month.

GM hybrid vehicles continue to gain in popularity in the marketplace with 228 hybrid Chevrolet Tahoe and 123 GMC Yukon 2-mode SUVs delivered. There were 349 Chevrolet Malibu, 29 Saturn Aura and 362 Vue hybrids sold in July. For the month, a total of 1,091 hybrid vehicles were delivered, with 5,467 hybrids sold so far this year.

“We’re working hard to change perceptions and gain awareness of GM as the leader in advanced propulsion technology and fuel efficiency,” LaNeve added. “Customers can experience that each time they visit a dealer’s showroom to see the full lineup – including five hybrid models -- that provide industry-leading value, great fuel economy and the best warranty coverage of any full-line automaker. We don’t just talk about technology, fuel efficiency and value – we have the cars and trucks available today to back it up.”

GM has aggressively managed inventories to low levels. In July, only about 747,000 vehicles were in stock – a three-year low – down about 201,000 vehicles (21 percent) compared with last July. There were about 236,000 cars and 511,000 trucks in inventory at the end of July.

Certified Used Vehicles

July 2008 sales for all certified GM brands, including GM Certified Used Vehicles, Cadillac Certified Pre-Owned Vehicles, Saturn Certified Pre-Owned Vehicles, Saab Certified Pre-Owned Vehicles, and HUMMER Certified Pre-Owned Vehicles, were 41,594 vehicles, down 2 percent from July 2007. Year-to-date sales are 298,137 vehicles, down nearly 6 percent from the same period last year.

GM Certified Used Vehicles, the industry’s top-selling certified brand, posted July sales of 35,799 vehicles, down 4 percent from a strong July 2007 sales performance. Cadillac Certified Pre-Owned Vehicles sold 3,700 vehicles, up 22 percent. Saturn Certified Pre-Owned Vehicles sold 1,164 vehicles, down 24 percent. Saab Certified Pre-Owned Vehicles sold 770 vehicles, up 21 percent, and HUMMER Certified Pre-Owned Vehicles sold 161 vehicles, up 89 percent.

“Our luxury certified pre-owned programs – Cadillac, Saab and HUMMER Certified Pre-Owned Vehicles – each posted strong sales increases last month, and GM Certified Used Vehicles is again setting the pace to lead the segment in sales this year,” said LaNeve. “We’re confident more shoppers will seek the quality and value that manufacturer certification offers.”

GM North America Reports July, 2008 Production; Third-Quarter Production Forecast Remains at 900,000 Vehicles

In July, GM North America produced 238,000 vehicles (116,000 cars and 122,000 trucks). This is down 16,000 vehicles or 6 percent compared with July 2007 when the region produced 254,000 vehicles (91,000 cars and 163,000 trucks). (Production totals include joint venture production of 14,200 vehicles in July 2008 and 13,000 vehicles in July 2007.)

The GM North America third-quarter production forecast is unchanged from last month at 900,000 vehicles (456,000 cars and 444,000 trucks) which is down about 12 percent compared with a year ago, due to production adjustments in response to market changes that will reduce the number of trucks produced by about 209,000 and increase the number of cars by about 89,000. GM North America built 1.020 million vehicles (367,000 cars and 653,000 trucks) in the third-quarter of 2007.

But MB and BMW don't offer AWD on their flagships? :uh:

I don't think AWD is that critical on a huge flagship sedan - I don't think it adds much (except weight :p). If weather's foul out, the grey poupon crowd can use the SUV instead. :D

Toyota is not Honda or any other automaker. They are not going to forget about the LS or let it wither on a vine and die.

Like they've done with the SC you mean? What, 400 sales this month? :p There's now 4 GS models vs. 2 in the past, and sales are lower. ES, IS, RX are the Lexus mainstays (and all great vehicles).

On a side-note, C-Class sales continue to be incredible. Also impressive is how solid IS sales continue to be.

Agreed. And E class sales are incredible given how old the model is!

Mercedes S550 is available in 4matic (AWD), I think it does help Mercedes sales in snowy climates like the Northeast & the Midwest, & of course Canada, & I think the vast majority of the S-class/LS owners aren't really the Grey Poupon crowd yet.

But I think Lexus dealers are much more concentrated in the west in the U.S. anyway, their presence is not as big in the midwest & the east. So maybe that's one of the reason why they still haven't introduce AWD for the 460 yet?
Note there are only about 230 Lexus dealers in the U.S. compared to around 350 dealers each for both Mercedes and BMW.

.........I think Lexus, at least on the LS, needs to offer better lease deals. The lease deals available on the S-Class and 7 absolutely blow away the lease deals offered on the LS.

I'm pretty sure they were offering decent lease deals last month on the LS - at least here in the Midwest. I seem to remember seeing $699 or $799.

What I find really shocking is that the IS-F is at 2.9% financing. I'm sure the people who bought the early ones are not thrilled.

Note BMW excluded the M3 from their .9% financing and the dealers are crying - because those things are not moving either!

TRD, if you look at the sales again, it looks like the civic outsold the corolla.

Haven't looked but perhaps the 'new Toyota math' is involved including Matrix, Yaris, and Prius sales too in the Corolla total. :D

Edit: OK just checked the releases:

Corolla 34,438
civic 32,565 (29125 + 3440 hybrid)

So looks like TRD is right.

if you look at the year-to-date, civic 234k corolla 228k.

I wasn't talking about year-to-date, I was talking about July sales. Check again, the Corolla did outsell the Civic. Also considering that early this year Toyota had a model change-over with the Corolla, the fact that it's only a few thousand units behind the Civic YTD is quite impressive.

I thought you were talking about year-to-date. but if corolla keeps selling at this pace, they'll probably outsold civic by the end of the year.

Interesting, thanks for the chart. Lexus has the lowest incentives out of all of them, even now....

Also from: http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=a97fiq1RYJME&refer=home

Bayerische Motoren Werke AG, the world's largest maker of luxury vehicles, is increasing incentives to purchase cars as a way to reduce reliance on leases that make up 60 percent of its U.S. sales.

[...]

Makers of luxury vehicles typically get a higher percentage of sales from leases. About 20 percent of U.S. new-vehicle sales were leases this year through July 20, according to J.D. Power & Associates. The market-research firm's Power Information Network said such contracts were 55 percent of sales at Daimler AG's Mercedes-Benz, 43 percent at Toyota Motor Corp.'s Lexus and 42 percent at General Motors Corp.'s Cadillac.

[...]

Toyota's Lexus hasn't changed its position on leasing and has no effort similar to BMW's, spokesman Greg Thome said.

Daimler's lending unit, Daimler Financial, hasn't altered its stance on leasing in the U.S., spokesman Jack Ferry said. Of Mercedes-Benz sales the unit handles, three-quarters are leases.

Volkswagen AG's VW Credit hasn't pulled back on leasing for its Audi luxury brand, Audi spokesman Christian Bokich said.

Percent of sales through leasing:
BMW 60%
Benz 55%
Lexus 43%
Cadillac 42%

Good info.

Surprises to me... that Lexus is that high, and that Cadillac is that low, but I think Cadillac's generally older buyers aren't as much into leasing, whereas many BMW/Benz 'buyers' want the vehicle for images/business and so lease.

Well at Lexus 43% to Cadillac 42% one is perhaps not too high or low from either interpretation (yes I see what you mean) :D

It's also interesting to see this data, given that I've read auto commentators suggest Lexus' main income basically comes from 'throwaway leases' -- but this data show that 57% of sales are actual purchases and not leases. And indeed the BMW/Benz leasing strategy is confirmed as the dominant theme for them, and the main source of income by units.

Nope, they are not available. It is supposed to be a very low production vehicle and the dealers I have been at have zero available.
