I just broke the 122,000 mile barrier tonight on my '96 ES. Regular DIY service and maintenance is the key to longevity. I'm planning to change the oil and throw in new front tires this weekend.

94 LS400 127 KMiles

Used bought when 56 KMiles in 98.

-Change Oil Every 3 Months. Do it yourself (around Every 3K Miles Oil Filter every 6K).
-Change Transmission Oil Every 30K Miles. Do it yourself .
-Replaced all front and rear brake pads at 81K (one rotor on the rear driver side pad went out but lazy to take care right away and paid the extra cost). Do it yourself.
-Tires Changed at 91K use Pepboy Futura SE 2000, already ran for 37K and expected for 20K more on tires.
-Aligment at Pepboy while changing tires. No sign problem with tires so the aligment should be okay with Pepboy.

Major problem: Power Steering leaks caused Alternator went bad. So the following had done at the same time 125K (Do it yourself).

-Power Steering Leaks at 115K (Big bold between Hose and Power Steering Pump), bought Rebuild PS kit to rebuild at 125K miles. I should taking care of this problem earlier so this will not cost time and money to replace Alternator below. While doing the rebuild I think the power steering fluid run really hot that cause all of the seals became harder and easy to crack. Perhaps add on a Power Steering cooler might help to extend the life of Power Steering and other related components.

-Power Steering Leak drip Oil on top of Alternator caused Alternator went bad in middle of busy street, car being pushed to the side. Bought a Rebuild Alternator from the local Special Starter Alternator shop for $100 or 125.00 Lexus charge for $550 to $850 part only, depend on the late or early 94 LS400.

-Since the car has major works above; why not replace timing bell at the same time (dealer charge $450 for timing bell replacement. I think it's good price unless hidden cost etc...). Timing bell is still look very good but better Safe then Sorry!!!

-Well, since timing bell being replaced, why not replace Front Seal, Water Pump, Rotor, Cap, Spark Plugs, Differential Oil, Clean Transmission Filter etc..

Total cost for part about $500.00, Plus Pay the shop $100. (My brother's friend has a Body shop, that has lift available, so he let me use it. I paid him $200 but ,he insisted not to take money from me. Finally, we settled for $100). Nice Guy Thank You Sam.

Everything went fine, Except I got the wrong spark plug because, I bought spark plug at local Kragen store and they don't carry the Nippon Denso, I took the cross reference one. The cross reference one causing me engine misfire (not so sure the cross reference causing problem or cross eyes causing me wrong spark plug that end up with engine misfire??? :o :o :o).

I think with the problem above could cost me about $4500.00 but, luckily, problem occurred right at the time my Company force to take vacation; so 3 of my 10 days vacation were under the car lift.

Thank you all for helping me with Engine Misfire problem and I am Sorry for my English even though I tried very hard to write.

Well...this Lexus isn't mine, but it is in the family...

My Mom's 1990 LS400 has 301,000 miles on it.

It's required a new fuel pump, new water pump, some AC work, a rebuilt climate control panel (lighting issues), some bushings, rotating parts lubing, new rotors, lots of tires and brake bads, and lots and lots of oil changes (my father shoots for every 5000 miles).
It still starts immediately and drives just like it did when they bought it in 1993 with 30,000 miles on it.
Best $30k they've every spent...except maybe my college tuition. ;)

I had an LS400 sold it and bought a mercedes, my dad annexed the mercedes and gave me his Ls400 in return I waited another year and gave the LS400 to my step mom and bought another LS400 (98 W/nAVIGATION, hid, etc) sold the 98 with 130K and bought a GS4.

But the 293K miles was almost 2 years ago now, so I think I still hold the record :D

My GS has 110000Kms......about 70000miles

I met this one guy at a Lexus dealership near Toronto and his 1990 LS had 500,000kms.....thats over 300,000miles and the amzing part was he's never had a repair before other than regular maintenance, and wear/tear items. Even his rad and exhaust was factory installed. Oh yeah, he did have his first problem (that's why he was at the dealership)..computer trouble.

Well, my 1990 has 217,000 miles on it. It left me stranded last night. I think the fuel pump when out, becaue I was going up a hill, with a half tank of gas and the car began to surge, then died. Never to be started again.

I do my maintenance on my baby. I have recently (5,000 miles or less) done the following:

Starter
Alternator
Radiator
Brakes with siezed calipers
A/C compressor
Upper A-arm bushings and 4-wheel alignment
Thermostat
Door lock actuator ($700.00- the actuator when out with the door closed and me inside)
Fan clutch
Fan bracket
Some other things I'm sure I'm forgetting...

I have also replaced the leather interior with a leather kit from Katzkin.com. Not bad. Definitely have a professional install because the kit required some modifactions to fit perfect.

At 217,000 miles the car still looks new inside, rides awesome, and when it runs... it runs excellent.

I'm wondering if my car is going to be a maintenace big here on out...

My 1992 SC400 bought new in '92 now has 339,500 miles on the odometer. Actual mileage is a little more than that because I drove the car for a total of 3 weeks or so with out the instrument gauges while Lextech Lighting was installing LEDs and repairing the needles. Still has the original exhaust system, radiator, A/C blows ice cold, replaced the lower control arm bushings in front, engine and tranny mounts, power steering rack bushings replaced, lots of tires and brakes, no major engine work. Probably needs another water pump/timing belt job, I can't remember the last time I had that done(maybe 200,000 miles ago?) Drivers seat needs new upolstery (leather is cracked). Still runs great.

I'm sittin pretty on 288,000 miles right now....

Just replaced it's third Alternator, second power steering pump, and first windshield 3 weeks ago.....and passed smog today in every category....

I had a 1992 LS400 that has 165K miles on it before i wrecked it. I must say, even with 165 K miles, that car still ran like a beast. It was just as smooth and powerful as the first day i bought it. 100 K miles is considered barely broken in.

SCHundo, you're kidding right? Don't you know, OLT's business is refabbing old burned-out Lexus clusters and installing new LED's to return them to better than new condition. He has many color options available. Check out his website, LexTech Lighting.

Chenge the timing belt/waterpump every 100K, and fix AC and power steering as needed (every~150K miles) and you will easily! get over 300K miles, I speak from experience on 2 LS400's.

I orignially purchased the new battery in July 2004. The warranty is good for 24 months so Crown Lexus was able to replace the battery at no charge yesterday. I picked up my 1996 ES 300 last night and I looked at the battery and it has a Lexus sticker on it and it's good for 84 months or 7 years. I was like Yes!!!!!! My new battery as of yesterday is warrantied until 2013. Way to go Lexus...

My DWP 1992 SC 400 (purchased new in '92) has passed 355,000 miles on the original engine and drive train (hell, even the mufflers are still original). I just had the 100,000 mile interval service performed and mounted a new set of tires. In the next week or two I will install the new leather seats I bought as part of the group buy from LeatherSeats. It still runs like new, with the new leather it will look and smell like new too. My buddy let me use his oil siphon and it works great. You don't have to unscrew the drain plug and you don't have to get underneath the car. The oil gets sucked out through the oil dipstick holder.

Actually I change mine more frequently than recomended.
Fact is when you have suck, squish, bang, blow going on at an average of
3k rpm for 200k miles
Thats alot of fuel and carbon getting burned and captured in the oil and being deposited on the surrounding surfaces.
Its going to accumulate somewhere. Pull apart an engine with only 10k miles, its likely you find deposits starting to form already.

That really sucks :D or I guess your saying sucking is bad when it comes to oil from a car. My SL does not even have a drain plug, Mercedes sucks all the oil out of the new ones. Makes more owners return to the dealership for service. But my SL uses syn. oil and is changed once a year or every 12-13K miles based on what the engine determines. With mine that ends up being about every 6K miles. I let the Lexus dealer do changes in my LX every 4-5K miles and they use a semi syn oil that for that mileage and how easy the Lexus 4.7 V8 is on oil is over kill. All the sludge should be held in the oil and not be laying around in the oil pan if it is it doesn't matter if your oil is drained or sucked you have a big problem.
