I'd have to say, if it wasn't targeted at minorities only in it's parady the negative potrayal of our disfunctional society,.. I might have found it funny,... but it sad a bored racist brain with too much time on their hands can come up with something as stupid as this and think nobody is going to have a problem with it. I could only imagine if the Nation of Islam ( which I am not a member of, nor support ) came out with a game like trailor-parkolopy and tried to sell that to the African American community as a humorous way of identifying to young black youths what Anglo life is "reeeeeeally" about. It'd be an uproar ( rightfully so ).

this is truly dissappointing.... but I guess you'd have to see it from this side to understand fully how it's an insult...

"Calls to company president Richard Hayne, who started the young-adult chain in a West Philadelphia rowhouse in 1970, with the hippie-style Free Peoples' Store, were not returned. A receptionist said the company had no comment.

The game's 28-year-old creator, David T. Chang, said Ghettopoly is edgy, not racist.

Ghettopoly makes fun of many ethnic groups, he said, including Asians, the Irish, Hispanics, Italians and Jews. There's even a Chinese restaurant owner who sells dog - a jab at Chang's heritage as the son of a Taiwanese restaurateur."

Super!!!! Can we just get along?????? It was quite funny that day, 3 days ago, I was walking around Walnut St, the Urban Outfitters Store was picketting with a huge crowds. I didn't know what the heck was going on until i saw the boardgame.... FUNNY!!!! NO KIDDING.... I went and got one after the angry people left!!! Just to see what is it all about....

Turn out the game is pretty funny, and if you want to take it negatively, then it is a bit stereotypical, making fun the urban sub-standard society, e.i. Ghetto!!!! I could be wrong but, maybe I'm still too young to give a rat about all these racism and prejudis drama!!!! Take it easy people, it's a game!!! I never got upset over something like this, as last year, AF's in Boston got protested by a bunch of Asians because they came out with a new line of clothing that make fun of Asian, like "Got Rice" T-Shirt, and stuff....

My point is, GET OVER YOURSELF everyone!!! Again, can we just get along????

nope,... absolutely not,... cuz as I said,... if it focused more on those fallin' into the majority, it'd get a different spot light...

just like the movie "White man's burden" wasn't too popular here in America, cuz nobody wanted to see the roles reversed,.. but when Monster's Ball comes out, and the minority folks are playin' their typical roles, they get awards, and the everybody loves them... you ought to seek out what the black female population thinks of miss halle's fine azz right about now,... she lost big respect at the gain of the white community's acceptance and approval... NOBODY GAVE PROPS to the latter,...it's not acceptable.. nor favorable.

One of my better friends is Thai, and he thought the idea of such stuff was stupid, to insinuate that your neighbor's pet might be on the dinner plate if his dad was hungry,....I'd probably be happier if the players looked somewhat like this....

Maeve

I don’t see the game as a racist. It is the reflection of what is going on in our society these days. Although, I do understand why some people are getting pissed because the creator, David Chang, is using a caricatures of some of known leaders in the nation (he only misspelled the name) in the game. Overall, the game would fun to be played. We can laugh at ourselves.

We like to see our own reality in the society. This is why the Survivor show, the bachelor show, or any other reality TV shows are played during the prime time and they all get a high rating. We like them. Don’t get me wrong. I am saying that we would like to degrade our society.

Urban outfitters aim their market at young people who are not old-fashioned. They could accept this game because the see it everyday in their life. Right?

On the other hand, if David Chang didn’t use those caricatures of some Black leaders; perhaps, everyone would've been silence and would've bought the game for themselves.

Just my 2 cents.

Nazty, are you mad that a ghetto exists?

now that was a dim question,.... if I was mad about ghetto's existing,... I would'a said,... how come he didn't make a game with the suburbs instead, and used family names like the Huxtables and had street names like Soccer Mom's Ave. What I've been depicting here, is in his poooooooooor excuse of a ghetto portrayal,... he forgot about all of his homies that look like him,.... the ones I've displayed here in this thread, AS IF NONE OF THE GHETTO POPULATION is other than MINORITIES ( which he excluded his own)!... and yes I said his homies, cuz Asian is not the majority of his enviroment that he grew up in... so he should'a known that people existed in America like those whom I posted and they had more than a couple of spots on that board game!

But it's based largely on African American culture, he said, because "for me to put an Asian guy in a game called Ghettopoly would be a little off."

I know plenty of ghetto asians,... cause ghetto unless I don't know somethin here included everybody who has a particular social disposition and income level which produces a certain mentality, lifestyle, and so on... and the irony is even when the income level increases,.. the mentality may stay... so really this game could have had all of the gangsta rapper cribs from MTV - How ya livin'... and everybody had Ferrari Modena's on Spreewells or DUBS,... but no,... can't be to satirical of someone who has more money than you will ever have huh....

"It's blowing way out of proportion. People are using it as a scapegoat," Chang said. "I thought people might get it for what it is, a satirical stereotyping of ghetto culture. Why take it seriously?"

scapegoat for what?? I guess he lives in this glass bubble oustside of America, cuz he obviously thinks racism and racial issues are dead... I'm not gonna even post any articles just from our Houston Chronicle about the racial injustices to illustrate how some things as this are unacceptable. Biut then again, he probably by his age, schooling, and background may not even know anybody other than upperclass America...

Chang, who lives in western Pennsylvania, has no firsthand knowledge of the ghetto. He and his family moved to the United States from Taiwan when he was 8. He went to a private high school and graduated from the University of Rochester in New York state with degrees in economics and psychology.

I'm not even trippin on the fact that he is from Taiwan, OR EVEN IF HE had of been white, it doesn't matter, I am trippin' that his mindset is as if he were Anglo and somehow his boardgame could not include the likes of him. It's been said that money can generally cause the minority to feel as if they have transcended the racial barrier and cause them to think and act differently.... I can actually say that IMO, I don't want to agree with that, but I have seen it in it just my own community in the corporate world. Some members of my community get some big money and start seperating themselves from their own and associate primarily the desired "others" and feel just like Muhammed Ali,... " don't I get to eat with the white folks, since I'm the greatest boxer in the world?"... he had to sit his azz right outside like everyone else LIKE HIM. The point made here is to explain how I view Mr. Chang's behavior and views on life.

I'm not making this a black or white issue,... my original point is, and will be, America is a melting pot,... there are representatives from every race in every facet of life, from ghetto fab, broke, trailor park, suburbia, to the filthy rich... anyone attempting to portray any aspect of American life should make it accurate, that he did not do,.... obviously he hasn't met his poor un-affluent cousins', and since he's living kinda nice,... he probably doesn't know he has any in downtown NY or Houston or LA.... sorry azz.

I honestly feel that if an African American made a game as such targeting "trailor park" or "little italy" or "chinatown" or even the bario,... I would be embarassed and ashamed that someone from my community would even do something as stupid after having to live with a lot of the type of negative stereotyping that we have endured over the years,.... and maybe that's why you haven't seen a game like that from that community.. just a good guess

It'll be funny when Master P sues his azz or Russell Simmons since they're super wealthy and he's not...

Nazty, we know there are white people in the ghetto, that's what we have eminem for.

true,... but eminem wasn't representing or represented in the game,... neither was Vanilla Ice, Insane Clown Posse, Beastie Boys ( now they jam hard - Paul Revere ), nor 3rd Bass..

I hated 2 Fast 2 Furious,... but one thing good about that piss poor excuse of a movie was, it was inclusive to all ethnicities ( a good wide range, cuz alll is infinite ). I liked the spades game scene with the asian underpaid mechanic that overcharged sitting next to Ludacris and Brian Speilner ( main character ). They didn't pretend the only people who rice out cars where asians, they were smart enough to know everybody does,.... but then John Singleton is black and has been forced to understand racial sensitivity and view American culture and subcultures in a different light....:eek3:

[QUOTE]

Just curious, If David Chang had created these characters in the game, then you would think the game represent all aspects of the American culture?

NAZTY97
10-11-03, 10:46 AM
no,... it would have only said that ghetto life he is tryin' to exploit to make a buck wasn't a black thing,... a minority thing, ....but an american thing.... and everybody's in it.

american culture doesn't gravitate to any one thing,... and ghetto fab rap life fo' damn sho' ain't it... what about the punk rockers, the goths, the preps, the gay & lesbian & bi .... stop right there!!!

I think we all know right there on that one.... if he had a made a satirical game about the Gay & Lesbian & Bi-sexual community,... Alll hell would have been broken loose 3 times over.... he would'a been considered gay bashing, homophobic, and a whole bunch of other stuff,...so, right there, again my point is, it didn't matter what the premise was,... race, lifestyle, etc... what he did was just blatently ignorant and wrong....

I don't live, nor ever have lived in the ghetto,... nor lower class for that matter,... but since i have relatives that did / do... i never forgot to be cognicent that it's not a good situation and even if there was humor in it, that I would not stereotype it's calamities to the extents that he did. Look at the cartoonitures and tell me what percent were black?? It revolved around his research of gangsta rap and MTV.... so what would you expect it to be? Hell, it doesn't even represent the whole picture of rap,... being a dj, I'm thinkin' I have the new wave of dumb as hell rappers to blame for givin' him a poor education on black life since that's the only education on it he probably has and MTV blesses him with a good dose of the sh@#t every day.

If you don't like it, don't look at it. I think it is funny as hell. If you can't laugh at stereo types, you need to load a bowl and loosen up a bit. Or at least take it with a grain of salt and accept that if there wasn't something to base a stereotype off of, there wouldn't be a stereotype. Guess you never saw the movie Whiteboyz, I don't remember anyone demanding it to be pulled off the shelves? It can either be taken as an insult, or as a commentary on a certain type of people. Most people who aren't looking for something to ***** about would take it as the latter. I hope the otherones are just as creative.

1. there's a difference between a sense of humor and pure dumb azzedness... my life isn't goin' to end over this POS board game,... and I'm not even giving it the grain of salt in it's existence by picketing about it. If anything, it's dissappointing that people with as much brainpower as alleged on this forum claim to have can not figure out anything deeper than that bowl you were referring to because they happen to be in a ethnic group not targeted by the majority of this society's sinicism....

2. Whiteboyz... haven't seen it.... and really wouldn't care to,... I see them everyday, all day,.. just the way it is,... nothin' wrong with that,... but just a fact of living here in America.... and if it was a slander of poke at white males,... I doubt a minority group put it together, and if they did,... stupid azzes on their part, cause I'm not a part time racist... cool for my group to do dumb sh#$t like that, but bent outta shape over this.. can't play both sides like Rush Limbaugh

3. If I remember correctly, you mentioned your children were bi-racial and you had issues with some of the things surrounding that,... I could only imagine if there was a board game touchin' on somethin' that hit close to home, would you broaden you scope of thinkin'....

4. It's hard to laugh at stereotypes, when I'm the one often stereotyped incorrectly for the foolishness so many thinkers like you propagate. I should over look everytime a white female locks her car door and rolls the window up simply cuz I'm crossing the street and her and her expensive car happen to be too close to a black male,... cuz car jackers are predominantly black ( in her mind that is ). I should over look everytime I try to pass out my business cards to solicite my services as a professional and white male or female damn near sh#t in their pants because I spoke to them..... as if they were in some imminent danger,... I should over look every time when a person of another ethnicity assumes I must like chicken because I'm black... I think some white guy made that mistake on public tv with either Micheal Jordan or Tiger Woods at a golf tournament...

5. The only good in difference in this day in age, is the exploitation of it to divide those by the differences and make money if it's possible... look at interacial porn,... it's not just porn,... but "Monster Black Dude destroying little white house wife while hubby is gone" or " White guy breaks dirty black chicks back"...
BOTTOM LINE is it's used to make money and at any length to get it....Superior vs Inferior,... Excess vs Lacking... but maybe for the shallow minded, that's too deep... Willy Lynch knew this,... thus the devisive division between blacks simply because of their differences in shades of skin color...

This game clearly exploits disparity in our society at certain ethncity's expenses more than others and did a sorry job of being accurate in it's portayal.

I noticed you didn't touch on the gay & lesbian idea of a board game and how creative it could be, but then maybe,... they fall higher on the hierarchy of what's acceptable to satire and what's not in some people's eyes. When you govern your life by principles,... the details don't matter, because the principle remains the same for whoever or whaterever,.. point blank...

Here's an email I received from my employer's equal rights advocate:

-----------------------------

CALL FOR ACTION
80-20 stands with civil rights organizations in condemning the
"Ghettopoly" game. This game perpetrates harmful stereotypes against
African Americans, which is not a matter of humor, as the game
creator, David Chang, may suggest.

The game's stated objective is "to become the richest playa through
stealing, cheating and fencing stolen properties." Game pieces include a
cannabis leaf, crack cocaine, and a gun. Properties are not houses and
hotels as is the case in "Monopoly," but crack houses and public
housing projects. The object of the game is to build as many projects
and crack houses as possible while avoiding jail, car jacking, addiction
or death.

The game not only perpetuates massive stereotypes along racial lines, it
insults African American history - particularly Martin Luther King Jr.
and Malcolm X, who are both lambasted with insensitivity. For
example, "Martin Luthor King, Jr.," intentionally misspelled in the
game, is shown scratching his crotch and saying, "I have an itch." The
game also plays on Asian American stereotypes with an Asian brothel
as one of the spaces on the board.

This game is not meant for people to "laugh at themselves," as David
Chang, said. At a price of $32 a game, it can hardly be said to be
targeted at the ghetto demographic. It pokes fun at poverty, at crime,
at black history and at living in city slums.

David Chang immigrated to America from Taiwan when he was 8. His
father owned a Chinese restaurant. He is a graduate of the Univ. of
Rochester, and lives in PA. It is embarrassing that an Asian American,
who probably himself has experienced a lot of stereotypes is now the
creator of such a game perpetrating stereotypes against another
community. Since he is a member of our community, MAY BE HE'LL
LISTEN TO OUR VIEWS. YOU can reach him via
davidchang@ghettopoly.com or (866) 760-2135 & dial option 2 .

Ghettopoly is sold through Yahoo! You can reach Yahoo's CEO
Terry Semel via 408.731.3300 voice, 408.731.3301 fax.

Sometimes a product that is rejected by decent persons in our society
can be auctioned off for big bucks in eBay, as was the case with the 4
T-shirts sold by Abercrombie & Fitch denigrating Chinese Americans.
We don't want that to happen again. YOU can reach eBay's CEO thru.
Times were we had hoped that the other minorities will come to our
aid. Well, the best way to realize that hope is to stand with the
other minorities, when they need our voice and help. YOU will be
doing YOUR children a big favor by acting. COUNTING ON YOU.

that is the most stupid article I have ever read in my life..... I don't think I saw a single fact in that article, more or less some ignorant attempt to scapegoat one's ignorance and blatent bigotry.

Black music to blame for America's exploitation of a situation and environment it created in the first place? Give me a break. There is so much garbage on TV, in music, in education that you can interchange any of them and come up with the same baseless conclusion.

Wack theory!
