Just curious. The GS300 is my first car. The sad thing about that is that I will never own a car from any manufacturer other than Lexus. :)

What cars did you guys own before you finally got it right and got a Lexus? :D

Great loyalty, but never say never.

BMW, Mercedes, and Audi to name 3 make great cars and things change all the time. Maybe one day you'll want a Porsche.

Unlike some of you, my beginnings are very humble -- first car was a 1972 Chrysler Newport that I purchased when I was 16 for $400. It was basically a big land yacht that everybody laughed at.

My first "real" car was a 1991 Chevy Cavalier (if you can call it a real car). I bought it just out of college and it was basic transportation. Nothing fancy there...

Then I got married and we bought a 1992 Saturn SL. Talk about *basic*! This, however, was the most reliable and trustworthy little car we owned. We had to buy it because her Montero was on its death bed.

Next car was a 1995 Saturn SC2. It was decked out with all the power and performance options. Fun car. Handled excellent.

When the Saturn SL turned 95K miles, we sold it for a 1995 Infiniti G20T (w/5 spd). Another very fun car to drive. Just not the most reliable...

Now I own a 1999 Chevy Tahoe LT 4x4 and a 2000 Lexus GS300. I also have a 1978 International Scout II for my desert fun truck -- no top, lift kit, custom bumpers and seats, lots of fun!

Thx...Doug

I forgot my VERY first car/mode of transportation. How could I forget the 1982 Honda Moped!!! A 50cc, two-stroke, one cylinder. I pulled it out of the garage tonight and got it running again (kickstart):D

It has been sitting there for a while, but had no problem starting up. 6700 miles, boy that thing is fun! At 15 years old, it was great transportation.

He, he..

1. 70' VW Beetle, got it in 93', never drove it though.

2. 82' Mercury LN7, got it in 94', the ugliest, slowest car made by most any manufacturer, but it got me where I needed to go. Just had to drive incognito.

3. 84' Dodge Daytona Turbo Z, got it in 98', this car is one of the fastest cars I've ever riddin in, and after rebuilding a new engine and tranny that were meant for racing only, this sucker screams!! Have countless mods. It is 13 second car easy. Still have it. www.home.earthlink.net/~kanine21 <-- Old website dedicated to it.

4. 01' SBM/Blk Lexus IS300, Just got it in May, Blk LS Leather package, heated front seats, Moonroof, LSD, Trunk mat, wheel locks, Cargo net. Will add an RMM Rear Lip spoiler, TRD sways and a TRD supercharger when it becomes available. :D

Hah Hah....my first car was...

a used 1968 Renault R10, which I got in pieces for $200 in 1974 right after I finished driver's education. I had to help my Dad rebuild the engine. (Kinda like a lawn mower?) Painted it screaming yellow and put black, Renault racing stripes on the sides. (I thought the stickers would help, since I had only 48hp.) It only took premium fuel, but it did get 40+ mpg.
Kept it all the way through college and when I left to go to grad school by brother-in-law drove it to death. He figured when the doors fell off it was time for the junk yard.

Then there was that 1975 Olds Cutlass Supreme...
and I gave up owning cars for a while. Now I have my IS300.

Greetings Kiddies!
As perhaps the only representative of gezzerdom here – I’ve got a long list of cars owned. I’ll summarize since most aren’t worth a mention. A few good ones, some so-so, but mostly crap until later years when I could afford something better.

They include: 4 Chevy’s, 1 Jeep, 1 Dodge, 1 Plymouth, 2 Thunderbirds, 2 Oldsmobiles, 1 Rambler (I’m so ashamed), 1 Buick, 1 AMC Javelin, 2 Pontiacs, 1 Cadillac, 1 Chrysler, 1 Lincoln, 2 BMW’s, 1 Triumph TR-3, and 1 Lexus.

Ones of note:
’64 Corvair – a really neat, fun little car, bright red, 110hp engine, 4 spd, lots of fun (and only paid $450 for it). Ralph Nader didn’t agree with me.
’55 Triumph TR-3 – a real sports car – didn’t even have roll-up windows – lot of fun, lots of upkeep, lots of cold wind, rain leaks, etc. – but still fun.
’81 Pontiac Gran Prix – easily the worst car I ever owned – a real piece of *****.
’79 BMW 528i – this was before it was cool to drive a beamer – it was fast and handled, but lacked sophistication. I guess it was one of the first real sports sedans.
’83 BMW 528e – the devil created the “e” engine (or maybe it was Hoover or Eureka) but it was otherwise a nice car.
’87 Lincoln VII – that was a pretty good car – fast, luxurious, nice looking – a pretty good car.
And finally, my beloved ’92 SC400 – bought it in ’92 and still drivin’ it – still lovin’ it - I’m approaching retirement and don’t want to spend many k on a new one! Bet I have the baddest ride in the retirement home!

garnet92, seattleSheila,

hey old timers, I would have had a 1977 Oldsmobile coupe with tan vinyl seats, but it blew up before I was of Driving age...dad bought it new back in 1976! First car since migrating over to the US. He still has fond memories of it...but since 1988 (when it died) he/we have never owned an American car. (we had a dodge ram 4x4 ext.cab in 1995, but for only 2 weeks). Oh well the old man is 51 now and happy with his Volvo and Honda.

I still think an old vette stingray is hot old ride!

Near-geezer alertÑ

In '72, picked up a nice 67 Chevelle for $125.00 (estate sale)
Two months later, tranny froze one block from my house at the tail end of a 400 mile trip.

Next, in 1975, a '70 Chevelle from rust bucket hell...we are all still breathing the fumes.

And in 1977, my cousin's hubby sold me their '67 MB 230s, which promptly threw a rod after four weeks.

Followed in 1978 by a purchase from a friend of a '75 Camaro, which was stolen about 7 months later.

Then marriage, and a healthy succession of Toyota products.

OK, to continue the thread...

73 Firebird Formula 400 Ram Air. Worked over with way too much money put into it for a high school student... Put in a 65 GT0 389 engine, Holley mechanical secondary double pumper carb, Edelbrock intake, Engle cam, headers, etc. etc.... Would give the GS a run for the money if it ran long enough.

78 Pontiac Safari Station Wagon. Inherited it, got me most of the way through college. Had an unfixable leaky rear main seal that cost 1 quart of oil every three days or so.

87 Toyota Corolla FX16. Fun pocket rocket, like an ugly MR2 with the same twin cam engine and suspension.

92 Toyota Camry SE, 5-speed V6. This was a great car, but as it approached 100K I just had to sell it to get the Lex. Nothing EVER broke on this car, and I didn't want to wait for it to.

Geez...never really thought about it....but I've had a ton....starting with my first at 16yrs old...

82 Olds Cutless Ciera (spray painted blue one night....then salvaged it cuz I got another car)

87 VW Jetta (traded it since i drove it to death)

85 Buick Rivera (salvaged it after it started knocking)

87 Mercury Lynx (still sits in my dads back yard...lol it's my test-paint car)

84 Honda CRX (caught on fire...damn remote start on a manual tranny)

88 Mercury Sable (did a mustang 5.0 swap, then sold it when I couldn't pass inspection)

77 GMC Pickup (got towed one night, told the company to keep it)

94 Hyundai Elantra (lost it somehow after being my chop vehicle...at the end it was convertible)

95 Chevy Monte Carlo (what was I thinking...only kept it 2 months)

95 Nissan 240SX SE (got the ticket listed down below by the 94 Buick...insurance went to $4800/yr, sold this, traded motorcycle to get a non-sport car)

88 Honda Shadow cycle (traded to someone for the mercedes...what were they thinking?!)

79 Mercedes 300D (350k miles...smoked too much...sold to neighbor before I moved)

77 Chevy Nova (drag raced it, front end came up one time, when it hit ground the crank broke!!)

87 Pontiac Fiero (put a chevy v8 in it...oh what fun...got a great offer and sold it...big mistake)

88 Jaguar XJ6 (sold it to my ex-girlfriend, it's since totaled)

94 Buick Regal (repo man took it: got ticket for 117 in a 55 in the 240sx a couple up, lost license, insurance dropped me, bank took it since I had no insurance....bastards)

90 Honda Nighthawk cycle (drove hard for a summer, then sold it)

90 Chevy Beretta (out in my driveway - spare car)

87 Pontiac Fiero (yes a second one...putting the V8 in it as we speak...and I won't sell this one)

81 Mercedes 300SD (took to the shop, never picking it back up)

93 Lexus SC300 (my baby....and taking all my damn $$ too for mods)

90 Ford Bronco (needed a "good 'ol boy" truck to tow a boat)

Whew! The worst thing is.....I'm only 23yrs old now. Damn I've been thru some cars! I really can't stand driving any one vehicle for more than a couple months before I tire of it. Since I'm doing to much to my SC300....I'm not tired of it yet! ;)

I guess a BMW will be next, and a Volvo too. I gotta try them all! I've always wanted an older Lotus Esprit Turbo, and some of the early 90's models are getting below $20k now. Hmm.....

SR

EDIT: Had to add a couple more, TOTALLY forgot about them....geez...

Brian S:

I had done all sorts of stuff to the Hyundai....welded back doors shut, cut the roof off, turbo from an eclipse (same engines in the two cars), etc. Well one day I got carjacked, and they stripped most everything external, even the dashboard. They left most of the mechanicals alone.

Well the car still ran, and only had 60k on it. So I decided to try and sell the motor and tranny out of it for like $500. This guy called me and wanted just the motor, and I let him tow the whole car to his junkyard to remove it. Well I go by there two weeks later, and the car is missing. He said he thinks that one of the other people there figured it was total junk and sent it to the melting pot. Well he gave me $1k for it, so I was happy! :)

I still know one day I'm going to see a damn turbo convertible Hyundai Elantra go cruising by me! :)

HATE was kinda heavy. It just wasn't a LS 430. Big truck that was built with quality. Lots of window noise, coupled with noisey engine. Could NOT pass a gas station. Not at all economical, but I did expect that. Just happy we got rid of it and have a nice car.

I'm surprised you found that to be the case. My family has a Sequoia and, even though it is a newer platform than the LX, it is far less luxurious. It does, however, have the same engine. I am very impressed at how quiet this HUGE Toyota is. I would say engine and wind noise both are (dare I say)better than my RX.

1984 Red Nissan 200SX Hatchback 5 Speed- Awesome Car and will always be my favorite cause it was my first.

1994 Charcoal Nissan Maxima GXE- 4+ Years of incredible service, rock solid, nothing but good memories.

1997 Black on Tan Nissan Maxima SE 5 Spd- Piece of garbage. Unloaded it after two months, learned my lesson to never buy on EBAY out of state.

1998 Black on Black Nissan Maxima SE 5 Spd- Absolutely loaded with every option and tastefully modded. Had it for a year, nothing but pure pleasure. Never ever had anything to worry about. Unloaded it 15K miles and a year later for $600 than what I paid for it.

1999 Imperial Jade GS 400- Gourgeous car but has slight little flaws I'd never expect on a $55K car.

1988 Caddilac Fleetwood Deville- Current beater. Gray on Gray. 4.5L V8. Cant say anything. Got it for $200, could leave it anywhere. A real score.

Some of you guys were spoiled! :D

I got ya'll beat on the first car bucket award.

1981 Isuzu I-Mark DIESEL!!! It was about a 3rd or 4th hand car at the point I got it.

Oh man, everyone could hear me coming for miles in that thing. Black smoke spewing...I couldn't wait for a biker or a convertible to get behind so I could floor it. Once the car downshifted and the RPMs went up it spewed that black smoke all over em. I know, I know, I'm bad but I was younger and dumber.

One time I zoned out for a second and even put regular gas in that SOB, you know what....it still ran! Never even hiccuped or anything. I freakin hated putting diesel in that thing...I always had to get the plastic glove from the counter, the girlies were really impressed with that move. :egads:

It seems the LS is your first vehicle with it's original, intended, engine...what gives? :p
What year was your 240?

I have a '95 that I'm selling right now, would love to have the SR20 (or RB) in it, but it's an auto. I hope to find a '97 or '98 5-speed, eventually.

It was 1990 S13. It has 180,000 miles on it before the swap. BTW, you could get SR20 w/ manual tranny all together for a good price these days. I had to pay $ 3500.00 from a company in Florida 3 years ago and that was only for the engine  .

Well I loved the S13, the handling was superb, it took corner just like Porche. I am not kidding !! I have tried a stock Porche 911 and my S13 on the track.
Don't sell it just to get a younger 240 w/ manual gearbox, get a SR240 for your car instead. It will be a fun car to drive in weekend.

Check this site :http://www.240sx.org/ you might find someone who sells SR20

I have driven that car with the top down through a mountain road in Washington State. It was fun. Loved the throaty sound from the exhausts when you hit the accelerator.

Here's my short list I've accumulated by age 23 with a litte history behind each one. I hope I can add some real superstars to the list, of course my Lexus SC300 being the first:D I'm curious to see what others have owned.

1.1986 Honda Civic - totaled at 160K++ by an old lady on the way to the store

2.1987 Chevy Celebrity - stopped running at 117k

3.1992 Honda Accord - sold recenty at 146k, best running car I've owned

4. 1999 Chevy Z-28 convertible - brought low and sold high for a sizeable profit at 33K

5. 1995 Lexus SC300 5spd - current car, no plans to sell

1. 1981 AMC Concord station wagon (hand-me-down high school car)
2. 1991 Saturn SC (first model year, my first brand new car--a delight!)
3. 1992 Saturn SC (traded in my wife's Geo Storm for this once we got married)
4. 1995 Saturn SC2 (traded in my '91 when in for an oil change and regretted it big time)
5. 1997 Acura Integra GS-R (traded in the '92 Saturn and moved into the world of upscale carmakers)
6. 1998 Acura 3.0 CL (got rid of the Saturn lemon and have loved this car ever since)
7. 2000 BMW M Roadster (wife got the convertible bug and we decided to splurge while we still didn't have kids)
8. 2002 Lexus GS430 (traded in the M for a "family car", but still wanted luxury and power)

Now we've got our first little one on the way and I'm trying to decide if we're going for another sports car or a sport ute when I trade in the Acura... Great thread idea, by the way!

Perhaps you should rephrase this question to: How many cars have you actually OWNED?
Most new vehicles go out the door either leased or financed by the bank.......one does not actually OWN it until the loan is paid off and the title is transferred.

Won't list them all in the interest of time (also makes me feel old). But the last four have been the first gen Infiniti Q45 (nice car), Nissan 300ZX twin turbo, M roadster and the GS400. Over the same period a string of SUVs: full-sze Bronco, Isuzu Trooper. Expedition and an RX 300. Owned 11 others prior to these not counting cars bought for three kids. Will sell the RX300 this fall, but plan to keep my 2000 GS400. Never felt this way before about a car after four years and 60k miles. But then I've never modified one before.

To the best of my memory, and it ain't great at 46... ;

1965 Ford Custom 500 (Galaxie clone) Wrecked it when I was 17 ( welcome to the fun world of driving!)...took the 289 out of it and put it in a...

1965 Mustang - Bought it for $75 as it had a blown motor and rusted quarter panels and bad paint. (It was the first car I painted myself at age 18). Did the motor swap myself too. I was poor, so I had to learn to be my own mechanic, body man, and paint guy. That car was burning 1 qt of oil per week when I sold it to another young kid for $500.

1971 Chevy cargo van. I started playing in bands, and needed to haul people and equipment.

1973 Chevy custom van Needed the captain's chairs and folding bed for....ehh...my aspiring band work & travelling. Yeah, that's it!

1976 Cadillac Seville Aqua blue -green, really rare color. Real wire wheels ( yowzaaa), RWD with an Olds 350 electronically FI engine, the first of it's kind. Cool car for it's time. I was a ~23 y.o. long-haired white rock musician with a pimp car, lol. Go figure.

1980 Cadillac Seville Two tone brown (can't blame it on drugs-I didn't do them). Thought I'd "upgrade" to the next gen Seville, BIG mistake! FWD, bustle- back design, car was utter crap for me. Too many problems to list. Yeah, it was used, but still...I regret that one. If that was how the 'other half lived' I wanted none of it. I doubt I owned it 1 year.

1984 Lincoln Mark VII Silver with charcoal interior. Great car. Rode like on a cloud, air springs etc. Anemic ( that year) 5.0 V8 with ~160 HP but car was well built for a Ford product. Made me forget the '80 Seville at least.

1988 Lincoln Mark VII LSC Gun metal gray color. 5.0 H.O. this time, the Mustang motor. Torquey, fun car. I sold it to my brother @ 120k and the air springs then quickly took a dump (collapsed). The proprietary parts from Ford were really $$$ at the time. I won't sell a car to family now since that, but my bro doesn't hold it against me. He got it fixed and enjoyed the car a few years more.

1989 Ford Thunderbird SC I have owned this car for 13 years now. Unique car. The supercharged / intercooled model. 315 lb ft of torque @ 2600 RPM means gobs of grunt just off idle. Fun car to lay rubber with. Heavy, but still a good handling car with computer controlled soft/firm suspension. The first car I have modded; 3:55 gears, Lentech transmission, CAI, exhaust, pulleys lowered and rims etc. I painted it black in 1997, and I've won a 1st place trophy with it this year at an All-Ford show. Still a blast to drive, and it has ~220k on original motor, never been apart. Thank you Mobil 1.( If I can get that kind of longevity out of a Ford pushrod V6, just think of what I can do with my GS400).

1993 Mazda Miata Wife's car really, it has 133k on it now (bought it at 68k) and it's so far cost us ~$200 in repairs over the last 6 years. Amazingly reliable car. Not my cup of tea, but I do enjoy NOT working on it. :)

1998 Lexus GS400 Never had a car this good, a dream come true really. Stock, and it's enough for me at the moment. I would like to tighten up the suspension in the future and lower it slightly, but that's about all It needs for my tastes. The wife likes the suppleness more than I dislike the handling, so it's fine for now. When we can replace her Miata with a 350Z 'vert or used SC430, the GS can take on a different role for me, and I can mod it to my tastes. I am a hardcore Lexus guy now. 'Nuff said. :)

Hey Doug, black cars always look good. My 4Runner was black, and it always looked great after a wash and wax job. It did get dirty much faster and I had to wash it alot. After I got my ES 300, I remembered that feeling after I purchased the car I should have gotten the black one. I'm happy with my green ES now, I want to get a Toyota Tundra, maybe I'll get it in black. Toyota/Lexus all the way.

Although the GS is my favorite so far, the Jeep and VW were a blast to own. I only wish more cars were made like my VW...the car should've been totalled twice, but still ran beautifully until the day I had to give her up. :)
