Default The IS had a busy day today

First was a dyno session at the dyno shop:

and the results:

For those of you that can't see the #'s on that dyno sheet they are 268.69 hp/235.96 tq

Then the IS went to the drag strip and did 5 runs. My best run was a 13.784@99.86 mph with a 2.123 60 ft.

I didn't let the air out of the tires or anything. I'll break down each run after I post the time slips:

If you want to follow along just read the times we will go in chronological order, each of these runs was done with just over 1/4 a tank of gas. Radio and everything turned off and oh yeah, I removed the engine cover so that the engine could cool down more effectively between runs.

Run #1

VDIM off, left in D, no paddle shifting. vs a silver SRT-4. I really wan't sure at what rpm to launch at, so I just sort of slammed the gas when the second yellow light came on. It didn't wheelspin or anything, it just took off. I felt like it could have gone faster though. The temp was approx. 73 at that point. End results were 14.043 @ 98.80 R/T - .365 60' - 2.179

Run #2

VDIM off, left in D, no paddle shifting, same SRT-4 as run#1. I powerbraked up to about 1500 rpm and then slammed the gas. Temp was the same. End results 14.002 @ 99.63 R/T - .259 60' 2.199

Run #3

VDIM on, they said for the drivers to load up and almost immediately started rolling towards the approaching line. I tried and tried but coudn't get the VDIM to turn off. So I just said screw it and went up to the line. This was against a Mustang if I remember correctly. Temp was approximately 72. End results were 13.784@99.86 R/T - .178 60' - 2.123

Run #4 and #5 were with VDIM on and against a black '05 Mustang with lambo style doors. He said he was pushing 320 to the wheels. Run #4, I spun the tires at the beginning and that killed my time. End result was 14.276 @ 99.22 R/T - .362 60' 2.398 #5 I gave him a better run, but I still could have cut a better light. I still beat him overall by .1132 of a second even though he crossed the finish line first. End result was 13.814 @ 99.94 R/T - .353 60' - 2.127

Overall today I was very pleased with the performance of the IS.

I went to the dyno shop with really no expectations. I was just hoping for 260ish, so 268 and change at the wheels is alright, for now.

I also went to the strip thinking "there is no way I will be able to get anywhere close to the MAGAZINE #'s" and I came away pretty close to what they were running. So i'm happy for the car. The next step is to drop some weight and go back to see what the IS will run.

Let me know what you guys think.

Nice job. I wonder what the car will do when you put a few more months under the belt. I hear that cars get a little faster with time.

Wow you were a very busy guy! The dyno numbers look as expected too. I'll be dynoing my car in the next few weeks just before I install my first mod (intake) and I'll also be doing an after dyno and overlaying the results to see what kind of power the intake actually adds. There was a stock m3 on the local dynojet here and he put down 270hp compared to your 264, which shows the IS350 is indeed making the power that Lexus claims. Also loving that torque line!

I resized that chart so it's easier to read.

I thought the IS came with a true dual exhaust but from the 2nd photo it looks like what Honda/Acura uses on their Accord/TL cars. Basically a single exhaust to the rear axle and then a Y pipe into the dual mufflers. Say it isn't so.

It uses an X- configuration. Two from the engine merge into one, and then two again. I think there's a photo here someone took of the unobscured undercarriage.

RoRo...thanks for sharing

This is how reports should be done. Pictures, results and detailed observations. Excellent work!

RoRo = Awesome. That's only -38hp less than the advertised 306hp; very efficient drivetrain. This confirms my suspicion...air intake + HKS will supposedly give you back +22whp.

Look at the steady torque. Dude, the IS is a force to be reckoned with.

Let the modding begin

Hi RoRo - thanks for sharing!

Did you launch in PWR mode and to what RPM did you hold that car?

From your results, it looks like leaving the car in D and leaving VDIM enabled produced the best results - of course , this combination may produce the most consistent results as it removes many of the human elements from the launch and shift points.

So VDIM on got you better numbers?

With VDIM off you pulled 14. With it on you were in the 13s. I didn't think the technology would help.

That sounds pretty cool to me

My IS beats my S2000. I didn't think it was gonna when I bought it. I am pretty impressed. It's a really cool car.

I knew I was leaving something out when I posted all of that information. Yes, the PWR mode was on of course. I found that I was getting the best launches by holding the brake and revving to anywhere between 1500-1800 rpms, then just slamming the gas. I think that I could have achieved 13.5s if I was able to get turn the VDIM off in time and had a better launch.
