Default 95 SC400 Power Steering Pump Leak / Alternator

I have a 1995 SC400 with 45k miles. My alternator has gone out, and it seems like it is premature. I suspect the power steering pump is leaking, but do not see any visible signs of leakage. The engine compartment is exceptionally clean on my car, so I would think I would see fluid if it is leaking.

My questions are:
1. For those of you that have had a PS leak that has caused an alternator failure, how extensive is the leakage? Is there noticeable fluid in the engine bay? Where does the leaked fluid accumulate or come from? How much fluid does it take to fry one (empty reservoir)?
2. If it is not leakage, 45k miles seems like a premature alternator failure? Has an alternator ever died of natural causes on a SC400, or does the PS always get them? If so, how many miles can I expect?
3. Has anybody had any luck with aftermarket PS pumps?

Thanks

When you fix the dreaded p/s pump failure, you must set aside roughly $1,000, and deal with it properly. Toyolexparts.com can get you THE best deals on oem parts. You will need a pump AND pressure hose assy. for the system to work properly. You also need the alternator anyway. All parts will cost around 1,000. Figure a good independent shop will be around 300 to install all of it, and of course they must FLUSH the entire p/s system. Problem will be fixed. Do NOT go down the dark path of getting a rebuilt pump, rebuilt hose, trying to rebuild either yourself, or just replacing one part at a time. Just do it once, do it right.

Is this why the assembly makes a whinning noise when cold? When it warms up it goes away.
