Question 2000 GS400 climate control unstable

hi,

need some inputs or to see if anyone have relate problem as mine. My 2000 GS400 intermittlently having problem with A/C or heater. when i set the temperture or auto setting like 73 degrees at first 20 minutes is working perfect. after driving more than 20 minutes or so i would have to adjust the temperture too high(82) or too low(68) to get the right air outlet. just wondering if anyone experienced that kind of the symtem before i take my car to dealer and wouldn't find any problem.

thanks.

On my 2000 GS300, I've had similar problems, but not necessarily as extreme. If I want it to be around 68-70, I have to set it for 74-76 in some instances. Other times it seems to be accurate, but it seems as though it is dependent on the outside temp more than anything else.

The biggest problem I had with the climate control was over the winter, where the drivers side would come out cool, even if it was anywhere from 5-30 degrees F outside. Took to dealer many times, and they could not replicate.

Default Maybe thermostat issue?

I don't know if this is it, but could it be the internal thermostat,

I just got my car recently and seem to have the same problem.

It seems to have nearly the same cold temp from 65 to 81 degrees, even if it's 95 outside. Then it gets to medium for 82-83 degrees, then goes hot from 84-85 degrees.

The center ones also seem to be worse than the outer ones, or I could just be picky

Are you saying the air blowing on you is off temperature, or, the entire inside of the car is off temperature? The OM recommends that the vents not be blowing on you since the air coming out of the vents isn't necessarily the temp you have specified on the display.

Also yes, the HVAC is influenced by that little black bulb far up close to the window. Something about how it takes into account the amount of heat and adjusts the flow and temp of the air; can't remember exactly.

I have a 98 with no HVAC issues whatsoever.

I would have to agree that both my 2k1 GS4 and 2k3 GS3 have some of the most accurate temperature holding controls I have ever see. Don't want to dump on good old bimmer again but their auto climate control is a joke, spending all that time on engine output and handling leaves little time to sort out how to measure temperature I guess. I would take those cars in for service and like Dex is saying, try to figure out whether it is the temperature control of the air temperature coming out of the vent or the fan speed or both, might help the tech to sort it out quicker.

Dex, hit the nail right on the head. They use a small sensor mounted just right under the ignition key( 4 inches below). You will see a small 1x1 vent and this sensor is measure the inside temp. and send the signal to the AC ECU. If you set the AC in auto mode at 72 and the air surronding the sensor is 75, the AC will runs until the air temp. around that sensor is reading 72.
