10-Second Supra Twins: Toyota Built Two Budget GR Supras for the Drag Strip (SEMA 2022)
The Toyota GR Supra is already a capable road course racer. But with limited modifications, these 10-second Supra twins can also tear up a drag strip.
Much has already been written about the excellent Toyota GR Supra. It is a fine sports car that is impressive on the street and around a road course. And now it can even be had with a manual transmission. Woo Hoo! But it turns out the Supra is also a pretty good platform if you want to build yourself a drag car. At SEMA 2022, Toyota rolled out their 10-second Supra twins capable of hitting quarter-mile times that would make Dominic Toretto proud.
Building a 10-second car is surprisingly easy when you start with a GR Supra. The 10-second Supra twins that you see here were built with a modest $10,000 build budget. Outsiders might think that $10,000 is a lot of money. But those in the car-building world know that ten grand doesn’t go very far. So the fact that these cars can achieve this level of performance with these relatively minimal mods is certainly impressive. “The GR Supra is a bona fide sports car worthy of the Supra name and at the top of our GR Gazoo Racing lineup,” said Lisa Materazzo, group vice president – Toyota Division Marketing. “And now our team has turned up the boost, giving fans yet another perspective of GR Supra performance through true quarter-mile drag racers on a relatively small budget.”
The Power
The builds started with a pair of 2020 GR Supra 3.0 sports cars. The goal was to increase horsepower by 30 to 40 percent. “To achieve this the build team added a Pure Turbo single turbo and two CSF high-performance intercoolers to the stock 3.0-liter, inline six-cylinder engine, then worked closely with one of the leaders in the import drag racing world, Titan Motorsports, adding a catless downpipe, 3.5-inch exhaust and an ECU tune.” The result is 620 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque. Remember the stock numbers are 335 horsepower and 365 pound-feet of torque. The Supra obviously takes well to these mods.
The Grip
Power is great and all, but if you can’t get it to the ground, you are not going to go very fast. Wheels and tires were the next area of focus. “At the rear is a set of P305/45R17 Mickey Thompson ET Street S/S R2 compound radials on 17×10-inch Weld Racing Belmont Beedlock wheels with 40 offset and 7.1 backspacing. Up front is a set of 26×6.00R18LT Mickey Thompson Sportsman S/R radials on 18×5-inch Weld Racing Belmont Drag wheels with -23 offset and 2.1 backspacing.” The rear axles have also been upgraded.
The Stopping
When you nearly double horsepower, you really need to think about the brakes. But the GR Supra already has four-piston Brembo brakes up front along with 13.0-inch rear discs with single-piston floating calipers in the back. So outside of adding a set of Hawk Performance pads, the brakes were not touched. Keeping occupants in place are G-Force Racing Gear six-point racing seat belts attached to a harness bar with the stock seats. The results of this work? Speed. A lot of speed. After a bit of fine-tuning the cars earned their 10-second Supra twins’ name. The official results were a quarter mile time of 10.984 seconds. Not too shabby for a Supra with just $10K worth of mods.
