2017 Lexus GS F Is ‘Dangerous’ – in a Good Way, Says ‘St. Louis’

Old-school charm makes the local press fall in love with luxury ride.

Small, turbocharged engines are leading the way forward for automakers, as they attempt to meet stringent regulations. That isn’t the case with the 2017 Lexus GS F, and the St. Louis Post-Dispatch fell in love with the muscular sedan because of it.

Lexus, as a whole, is recognized for making luxurious machines that are comfortable and reliable. Those are good qualities for drivers looking to drive across the country, but it’s not something that enthusiasts or drivers that enjoy the occasional track day want in a vehicle.

As the St. Louis Post-Dispatch puts it, the GS F isn’t a regular Lexus. “For folks comfortable in the narrow perception of Lexus as a soft, cushy, blandly styled luxury brand, GS F isn’t just different – it’s dangerous.”

The GS F’s “dangerous” character starts with its menacing looks, which are highlighted by four tailpipes that are bundled diagonally; mesh-filled spindle grille; and ice-cube headlights. The exterior had the reviewer exclaiming, “Have mercy!”

Just like other automakers, Lexus is moving towards hybrid powertrains and compact, turbocharged engines, but the GS F is for drivers. And it backs its outlandish looks with a high-revving, naturally-aspirated 5.0-liter V8. The engine puts out 467 horsepower and 389 lb-ft. of torque.

To help drivers dial into the GS F’s capabilities, the high-performance sedan has selectable drive modes that the reviewer claims, “can crank the volume to 11.” (How very Spinal Tap!) The most potent of the modes, Sport S+ makes the “road missile fully track-ready.”

The Lexus GS F may be a performance-oriented beast, but it’s not too rough, says the Post-Dispatch. “Though never mushy, the ride is more civil than you might expect, given the talent,” writes the reviewer.

Lexus isn’t a stranger to high-performance cars, but the GS F is more than just a great Lexus — it’s a great car. “Loud and brash by any standard – GS F is a rocker.”
