Toyota Prius with half a million miles

They may not have been the most exciting half a million miles, but this Prius held up well considering it was driven to the moon and back.

If you are looking for the fastest lap times or need to tow a trailer, the Toyota Prius is not for you. But if you do a lot of driving, and we mean a LOT of driving. And you need a comfortable, reliable, and efficient car, it is tough to beat a Toyota Prius. The original owner of the 2017 Prius you see here is exactly the type of person the Prius was deigned for. The car was originally put into service in February 2017. 62 months later the car is offered for sale with over half a million miles on it, 546,921 to be exact. That is over 8,800 miles of driving per month. When you put that type of seat time in, 0 to 60 times are far less important than the time spent between fuel stops.

Now that this one-owner, half a million-mile Prius is for sale we can see how well it held up. We can also examine some of the mind-boggling numbers that it has racked up over the last five years. The car is listed for sale right now at Southern Motor Company in South Carolina. A video walkaround of this remarkable car as recently been posted to their YouTube channel. Here is what that video has revealed.

Half million mile Prius

It Looks New

The drive from Southern Motor Company to San Francisco, California is about 2,800 miles across the country. At 546,921 miles this Prius could have made that trip a staggering 195 times. You would expect with that many cross-country trips that the front of the car would look like it was sandblasted. Surely it has a few rock chips but in the video the car looks to be in great shape on the exterior. Even more impressive is the interior. The rear seats look brand new, and even the drivers seat looks like it came out of a car with 50,000 miles. There is some wear on the steering wheel but that is about it. It is a testament to both the owner and Toyota that the car has held up so incredibly well.

Fuel Savings

The owner of this vehicle obviously knew he would be doing a lot of driving and he choose wisely by selecting the Prius. In the video we see the average mpg displayed as 58.7. For the sake of numbers let’s assume 58 mpg overall and an even 546,000 miles. That means 9,413 gallons of gas were burned. Until the recent spike in gas prices the cost for a gallon of regular was about $2.60 per gallon from 2017. That is $24,473 spent on gas. A pretty penny for sure but consider this. A 2017 Toyota Camry with the 2.5L 4-cylinder gets a combined 27 mpg. It would have burned 20,222 gallons and cost $52,577. A 2017 Land Cruiser gets 15 mpg combined. That would have gone through 36,400 gallons of gas at a cost of $94,640.

Odometer

So, the Prius saved over $70,000 in gas compared to the Land Cruiser. That is almost enough to buy a new Land Cruiser with just the gas savings!  As far as environmental impact, here are some other figures. A 42-gallon barrel of oil produces about 20 gallons of gasoline. The rest goes to diesel, jet fuel and other oil products. That means the Prius consumed about 470 barrels of oil. The Camry would have needed 1,011 barrels and the Land Cruiser 1,820 barrels.

Other Fun Figures

The 2017 Toyota Prius cost roughly $25,000 new. It is for sale right now for just under $11,000. Figure the previous owner got $7,000 for trading it in. That is $18,000 in depreciation. That is a remarkably low 3.5 cents of depreciation per mile driven. The car was in service for about 1,885 days. That means it covered about 300 miles every single day. At an average speed of 50 mph, the owner spent 6 hours per day in this car, 7 days a week.

Should You Buy It?

Well, despite having over half a million miles, it is a one-owner, accident-free car. However, the Carfax shows the last service was performed 525,000 miles ago! Though it is unlikely no service was performed during that time, it probably was just not captured on Carfax. If you want to be in the Guinness World Records book with the highest mileage Prius, this one will give you a half a million-mile head start.
