The 2023 Lexus GX 460 soldiers on with a naturally aspirated V8 and a few key upgrades including a new Panoramic View Monitor.

If it ain’t broke don’t fix it. The current Lexus GX 460 generation has been with us for about a dozen years. In the automotive business that is a very long time. Consider this, when this generation GX debuted it shared the showroom the SC 430. Remember the SC 430? Yeah, that was a while ago. Yet, the GX 460 happily marches on, and buyers don’t seem to mind. For about the last 8 years Lexus consistently sells between 25,000 and 30,000 of these SUVs. The 2023 Lexus GX 460 has just been revealed and guess what? No major refresh. It continues with the same tried and true formula. And that is not necessarily a bad thing. Lexus is giving the people what they want. But that is not to say there are no changes at all.

The 2023 Lexus GX 460 will feature the return of the Black Line Special Edition. It will be based on the Premium grade model and limited to 3,000 units. The 2023 Black Line SE will come standard with Panoramic View Monitor to provide a bird’s eye view of the vehicle and objects around it. The Luxury grade also receives an upgrade with the addition of standard Mark Levinson Premium Surround Sound Audio. Beyond that there are some tweaks to the exterior color options. Eminent White Pearl replaces Starfire Pearl and Claret Mica is removed for 2023 models. “Inside, new Boulder Gray NuLuxe-trimmed seats accent the interior with black headliner, complemented by Gray stitching and Black Matte Ash Wood ornamentation can be found on the steering wheel.”

That really covers most of the significant changes for the 2023 GX 460. But the big story here is not what changed, but what hasn’t changed. Lexus along with most automakers is moving toward an all-electric future. But here we have the GX 460. Still powered by a naturally aspirated 4.6L gasoline V8 that is good for a combined 16 mpg rating according to the EPA. That might make environmentalists cringe but for those of us that grew up loving a V8 powerplant this is one of the few remaining vehicles that still uses one. We don’t know how much longer they will be around, but we know we have at least one more year. Grab it while you can.

Body-on-Frame

Rear

The GX 460 is not just old school in the engine bay. It is old school in the way it is constructed. Unlike most unibody SUVs of today the 2023 GX 460 will remain a body-on-frame vehicle. That doesn’t help much with on-road handling or fuel efficiency, but it makes it one tough SUV that can truly tackle the rough stuff. That is helped by the full-time automatic four-wheel drive system that is standard on all grades. Yet it is still a luxurious SUV. Think of it as an armor-plated bunny slipper. Tough outside and cozy inside.

Old but Connected

Interior

The GX 460 might not be the newest kid on the block, but it does still have most features a modern SUV shopper would expect. “The Lexus GX 460 offers a highly connected and intuitive in-cabin experience, thanks to its 10.3-inch multimedia touchscreen that features Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Amazon Alexa with the latest smartphone vehicle integrations and their respective virtual assistants. The premium suite of connected technology offers multiple ways to stay connected, including the 3-year Lexus Enform Remote trial to remotely start the engine using select smart devices. And, with six USB ports throughout the GX, both the driver and passengers can keep their smart devices charged and ready.”

Arrival

GX 460

Pricing for the various trims have not yet been announced. The current GX 460 lineup starts at $57,575 and the Black Line Special Edition starts at $62,310. We would expect to see at least a modest increase in price across the board. No specific date was announced but we would expect the 2023 GX 460 models to arrive in dealerships later this fall.
