2023 Toyota Sequoia Revealed With Tundra Looks, Standard Hybrid Powerplant
The all-new 2023 Toyota Sequoia shares a lot with the Tundra and Lexus LX, but has one big advantage.
The 2023 Toyota Sequoia – like the all-new 2022 Toyota Tundra – has been teased by the automaker for weeks now, giving us a few breadcrumbs as we await the reveal of a product that hasn’t been updated since 2007. Now, the 2023 Toyota Sequoia is finally here, and it’s somewhat of a consolation prize for those that covet the new Toyota Land Cruiser, which is no longer on sale in the U.S., as well as those that might want a less expensive alternative to the ultra-luxurious Lexus LX 600.
As expected, the new Sequoia shares quite a bit with both of those vehicles, as well as the 2022 Tundra. The full-size, three-row SUV is underpinned by Toyota’s TNGA-F platform like those other models, but surprisingly utilizes a solid rear axle instead of the independent setup present in the previous generation model, as well as its competitors – the Ford Expedition, Chevy Tahoe, and Jeep Wagoneer. Regardless, air springs are available, as well as adaptive dampers, for those that prefer a cushier ride.
Perhaps the most interesting thing about the new Sequoia, however, is that it comes standard with Toyota’s iForce Max powertrain that is optional on the Tundra. The hybrid powerplant churns out a healthy 437 horsepower and 583 pound-feet of torque and is mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission, giving it up to 9,000 pounds of maximum towing capacity.
As far as looks go, the Sequoia essentially mimics the new Tundra, though its giant front grille is 10 percent smaller. Available trim levels include the base SR5 and the more luxurious Limited – both of which can be paired with the TRD Sport Package or TRD Off-Road Package – along with the Platinum, the rugged and capable TRD Pro with its Fox internal bypass shocks, and the range-topping Capstone, which features standard 22-inch wheels and an upscale cabin.
The SR5 comes standard with an 8-inch touchscreen, though Toyota’s new 14-inch screen is optional on that trim and standard on all others. A 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster is standard across all series, while customers can choose between second-row captain’s chairs or a standard bench seat.
The 2023 Toyota Sequoia will be built alongside the 2022 Tundra at the automaker’s San Antonio, Texas plant, and is expected to launch this summer. Toyota hasn’t yet announced pricing for the new SUV, but the SR5 should start out around $50,000.
