How much would you pay for a luxury time capsule?

Cars from the 1980s and 1990s are increasing in value. The folks who wanted these cars when they were younger are coming to an age where they have some extra money, and they are happy to look for something from their youth that’s in decent shape. These cars even have their own specialty car show now. We are also in that strange crossover period. You have folks asking good money for nice cars, followed by folks screaming about how big of an idiot you’d have to be to pay real money for a car from the 1990s. Case in point, this eBay ad for an unbelievably clean 1998 Lexus GS.

This brown on tan sedan carries just 21,809 miles on the clock, is equipped with the lovely 4.0L V8, had a clean Car Fax, and it comes with a decent service history. Any car shopper would agree that those are all desirable traits, but we get the feeling that the $22,000 asking price is too steep for some. The person who listed the car is painfully aware how pissed off some people get about high-priced cars from the late 1990s. Here is a quote directly from the ad to give you an idea of what we mean.

This car is a unicorn that is the lowest mile car that has been for sale for years in this country. Do not call me and tell me what you think the price should be I do not care. This is such a rare find and I will just wait for the right buyer who understands what this car is.

Yes, folks, this is a prime example of the “I know what I have” guy. But to be fair, he does have a pretty great car listed for sale. The second-gen GS is a worthy car to park in your garage for many reasons. In 1998 the media praised the sedan with Motor Trend naming it Import Car of the Year, and Car and Driver threw it on the Ten Best list. The 1UZ 4.0L V8 is one of the best engines that Lexus ever designed. The interior is spacious and well designed. If the LS started Lexus’ domination in the market, the GS is the machine that proved the company didn’t just have a fluke. It is a major piece of the brand’s history and identity in the US.
