Battle of the Luxury SUVs: Lexus RX Versus Mercedes-Benz GLE

Ever since the Lexus RX created the luxury SUV segment, Mercedes has been playing catch up. And for their latest attempt, they’ve even created an all-new model: the GLE. Okay, so it’s really just the ML with a new name, 9-speed automatic gearbox, and revised diesel engine — but hey, at least they’re trying.

To get a sense of how the kind-of new GLE compares to the standard barer, the good folks at Auto Express pitted one against the all-new Lexus RX 450h. So besides being a battle between two luxury stalwarts, it’s also an interesting comparison between diesel power and hybrid power.

Off-road, the GLE and its optional off-road pack impressed AE more than the hybrid. But does anyone really drive these cars off-road?

As far as the hybrid versus diesel debate, AE judged in favor of the Lexus. They were impressed not just by the lower C02 emissions, but also by the performance the SUV is still able to muster while being better for the world.

In the design category, the Lexus pulled ahead again — with its sleek, sporty look accentuated while standing next to the high-sitting, boxy GLE. And it feels more modern on the inside too.
