Confirmed: All-New GX Launch Set for June 8 Alongside the TX!
Some folks are saying the all-new GX plans to take on the Land Rover Defender to be king of the boxy, luxury off-roaders.
Lexus announced earlier today on its USA, European, Japanese, and Australian press pages that the all-new GX will debut two weeks from today at 8 pm (Eastern) on Thursday, June 8. The global launch event for what we presume in the GX 550, which will also include the first-ever Lexus TX, is set to take place in Austin, Texas, and ClubLexus will be there to share as many details as possible along with our hands-on first impressions. Speaking of which,
Let’s Talk About This Second GX Teaser
Same image, brightened in Photoshop
The second GX teaser image, released today, shows what we think is a completely different trim level. In place of the muddied bronze GX (posted below to refresh your memory) with plastic wheel arches, we have what appears to be a silver GX with paint-matched wheel arches. We also get a clearer look at all of the squared-off, hard edges that, from my perspective, match the design language of the current generation Sequoia. Here, however, the GX seems boxier with squared windows and very steep windscreens (front and back).
Also, looking inside the back window, we can also see what appears to be two rows of seating — captain’s chairs up front, and a bench in the back. Lastly, speaking of the window, check out the triangle on the bottom left, which seems to confirm that this back window will open independently of the hatch itself.
Previous GX Teasers & Powertrain Speculation
Questions remain regarding the GX 550’s powertrain. Historically speaking, the GX has always been less powerful than the larger LX, Tundra, Sequoia, and Land Cruiser. And now that the world has seen the all-new Tacoma with the iForce MAX hybrid powertrain, will Lexus offer a similar powertrain(s) to something like the RX? It’s certainly possible. Variants of the turbocharged 2.4L motors are powering a lot of Lexus and Toyota products these days. The other possibility is that we’ll see a detuned variant of the twin-turbo V6 from the LX 600.
With two weeks to go until Lexus unveils the all-new GX and first-ever TX, we’ll likely get at least one more round of teasers. And then be ready for full coverage of both vehicles on June 8 at 8 pm Eastern. Given the way press events and embargoes work, you can expect general information-style announcement articles to launch the moment that the global embargo lifts. This will then be followed by in-person reactions, tours, and photos.
