At the Detroit Auto Show today, Lexus debuted its 2016 GS F sedan, with five passenger capacity and what the company describes as “approachable performance.” Based on the GS luxury sedan, this is an enthusiast’s vehicle with a naturally-aspirated 5.0-liter V8, providing 467 hp and peak torque of 389 lb.-ft. of torque with a 7,300 rpm redline. It is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters for purists and pretenders.

With four different drive modes from normal through Sport S+, with Eco and Sport in between, the S+ designation (which is also on the GS 350 Sport). provides track ready features and drivability. The DOHC 32-valve powerplant incorporates the Atkinson cycle in certain driving conditions.

Lexus’ latest has wider forged wheels paired with Michelin Pilot Super Sport Tires (255/35/19 front and 275/35/19 rear). An enhanced braking system is built around 15-inch front rotors with available bright orange 6-piston calipers.

With 300-pounds less mass than its primary German sedan competitors there is near-neutral handling balance and exceptional driver control. Lexus’ Torque Vectoring Differential are standard equipment. It features two electro-mechanical clutch packs and operates in three operating modes:

  • Default is the standard setting which balances agility and firmness.
  • Slalom focuses on a more nimble steering response combined with agility.
  • Track is the setting for high-speed circuit racing.

Visual features include a modified edition of the Lexus’ spindle grille with the mesh pattern reserved for F vehicles, and large air vents have been integrated into the front fascia for a refine yet aggressive impression on this model which is lower and wider than others in the GS stable.  There are fender air outlets, forged 19-inch alloy wheels and carbon fiber accents.  A subtle carbon-fiber rear spoiler and trapezoidal tailpipes with chrome tips carry the sleek image from front to back.

The GS F is as luxurious as expected from a Lexus at this level.  A cockpit has an highly-configurable electronic cluster that can be easily set to the driver’s preferred driving style.  Alcantara trim is highlighted throughout the interior and the analog clock that Lexus has made a trademark is well placed.  A 12.3″ central video monitor is controled by a remote touch interface on the center console.  There is an optional 17-speaker Mark Levinson premium audio system and active sound control so that engine-rumble devotees can simply listen to the power of that exceptional engine.

A full package of safety features completes the GS F package with the updated Lexus Safety System announced late last year.
