Dumb Thief Steals Lexus, Has No Cash to Leave Lot
Unlike most car thieves, this one decided to be legal with his getaway in a stolen Lexus, and it’s all caught on tape.
There are so many ways to steal a car, it’s not even funny. There’s the usual method of taking a car under the cover of night. There’s doing it in broad daylight without worrying about how to get away. There’s stealing a car in broad daylight, but in a way that suggests you own the car you’re stealing.
And then, there’s this idiot. Santa Barbara’s KEYT-TV reports that a clueless car thief made off with a Lexus SUV parked at an Amtrak station, but decided to be legal about the getaway. Which is where things go south for the thief.
“I’ve heard of thefts being reported in the middle of the night when we are no longer staffing the lots,” parking lot manager Victor Garza said. “This is the first time I’ve heard [about] the alleged theft leaving the parking lot while the lot was staffed. And then, of course, being caught on video going through that whole process.”
And where did this thief fail in the theft of the Lexus? He forgot his wallet. Rather than bolt out of the lot, he sat in the car for five minutes while the lot attendant took down every bit of info about the Lexus. The idiot was then handed a fee due envelope to sign before driving away.
No one knows how the thief got into the Lexus in the first place, but acting like he owned the SUV certainly helped for the brief moment he thought he was smart, as did having the parking ticket obtained by the owner. And while Garza recommends those parking in his lots to have the ticket in their vehicle, Santa Barbara Police Public Information Officer Anthony Wagner begged to differ.
“Take it with you. Put it in your pocket, put it in your purse. Don’t leave that ticket in the front window, or within the vehicle.”
The Lexus and the thief are nowhere to be found at this time. The thief is described as a Hispanic male in his 30s or 40s, tattoos on his face, neck and hands, and a bandage on his right ring finger. And more than a few cents missing on his person. If spotted, call the Santa Barbara Police immediately.
