Future of Lexus Involves Sharper Handling, More Tech

Lexus exec outlines the exciting characteristics we can expect to see in all future (and a couple of current) models.

The last couple of years have brought a number of exciting developments to the Lexus lineup. Two new models, the LC and LS in particular, have breathed new life into the automaker’s offerings. But while both the halo coupe and sedan are exciting in their own right, they also hold many clues as to what direction Lexus is headed in the future. Many of which Lexus chief designer Koji Sato divulged to the U.K.’s Car in a recent interview.

Both the LC and LS feature, first and foremost, stunning and unique design characteristics. So it’s no surprise that Sato says the future design direction of Lexus will be “more unique, more distinctive, more brave.” This can be seen in the faithful transition from concept to production design in the LC. Even though the two look very much alike, the proportions are completely different.

The second major focus revolves around handling characteristics. Sato says that Lexus wants to “create a more unique character for driving performance” by manufacturing “a unique taste to the handling.” Toyota chairman Akio Toyoda is the driving force behind this evolution in steering behavior. Toyoda wants “clearer response and sharpness, and better response from the front tires” to improve feedback at all speeds. The LC is Lexus’ first stab at this unique taste in handling.

The LS, on the other hand, debuts a host of next-level tech that will eventually trickle down to the rest of the Lexus lineup. Sato claimed that “we believe we have the superior technology for creating advanced safety technology,” but cites a difference in approach than the competition. “We’re not saying ‘autonomous driving’ – it’s driving support right now and this is a differentiation point with the others.”

Of course, this doesn’t mean Lexus is turning its back on the characteristics it’s already famous for. “We have the four strings: one is the design, one is the performance, another one is the craftsmanship. Our backbone is in Japanese culture and the Takumi craftsmanship is a major point of difference. Everything is related to our culture.”

Unbeatable quality, next-level technology, exciting design, and an unparalleled driving experience? Sounds like a future we want to be a part of!
