GR Supra Heritage Edition Is Red-Hot
Specially built Supra includes head, tail lights styled to resemble fourth-gen supercar.
It’s been a week since we walked across the floor of the Las Vegas Convention Center in Las Vegas, where the greatest show on earth, SEMA 2019, was held. Our mission: to seek out the amazing Lexus builds in attendance, sort through them all, then bring you the best ones for you to gaze upon.
However, we couldn’t help but throw in a wonderful Toyota here and there. After all, it was Toyota who gave us the Lexus brand three decades ago; it’s only right to show you what we saw from the parent company. And what we saw is outstanding: the 2020 GR Supra Heritage Edition.
Built in a collaboration with its Motorsports Technical Center, the Supra has a few unique touches which tie it back to the fourth-gen car. For starters, the head and tail lights mimic those from said car, which left the line for the last time in 2002. The lights include 3D-printed elements, and the lenses were CNC-machined from acrylic blocks.
Another feature shared between the fourth- and fifth-gen Supras? The high rear wing. The wing is an OEM unit from a fourth-gen car, custom-fitted to be set atop the rear hatch, just as it was back then.
On the other side of the Supra, the 3.0-liter turbo-six received ECU remapping and a custom factory turbo. Together, the output jumps from 335 horses to over 500. The fire-breathing stallions make their way through the eight-speed automatic to a set of 19×11-inch HRE wheels, each wrapped in Toyo Proxes tires. The combo is wider than stock, but much needed to tie the power to the ground, lest things get squirrely.
To fit those wide meats without changing the Supra’s lines, the car uses a custom inboard suspension system taken from the world of open-wheel racing. The whole thing is then capped off with a lovely coat of PPG Re-entry Red, and a custom aero kit to go with the custom OEM rear wing.
This Supra is a truly stunning work of art, an excellent tribute to the fourth-gen machine that came before.
