Hagerty’s 2021 Bull Market List Includes Lexus & Toyota
Most cars and trucks are terrible investments. However, according to Hagerty, these Toyota models could pay off in the long run.
Ask any accountant and they will be quick to tell you that buying a vehicle is one of the worst investments you will ever make. In most cases they are correct. However, there are some collectible cars that buck the trend and will actually increase in value over time. Each year the folks at Hagerty publish their top ten list of cars that they think will make good investments. The 2021 list has two Toyota products on it. Each one is at opposite sides of the price spectrum. On the lower end you have the Toyota Land Cruiser from the mid-nineties. On the top end is the iconic Lexus LFA.
We are going to take a look at each suggestion and why we agree or disagree with what Hagerty has to say. What makes each choice special and why would they increase in price over the years? Also, are there any other Toyota products that should be on this list or perhaps may find themselves on it in the future? We will examine that as well.
Lexus LFA
To buy an LFA today you are going to need upwards of half a million dollars. If you have that kind of money to invest in a car then chances are you have already done well. It really doesn’t matter to you what the price does in the future. That is actually good advice for anyone looking to invest in a car. Rule number one should always be to buy what you like and not worry about return on investment. If the price goes up or down, you at least have something that you enjoy. Really though, who could not enjoy a Lexus LFA?
This car has everything you would want in a collectible. Starting with limited production numbers. Only 500 are on Earth. That means that there is only one LFA for every fifteen million people on the planet. It also features one of the best sounding engines ever fitted to a road car. It seems that every day a new announcement is made about more electric vehicles. There is likely to never be anything again that sounds like this car. This car is almost a slam dunk to continue to rise in value. And even if it does not would you really care? You are driving a damn LFA! Hagerty states that values went up 18 percent last year and are up 43 percent since 2018. Tell your account to chew on that for a while.
Toyota Land Cruiser FZJ80
Ok, now we are looking at something that regular humans can afford. According to Hagerty you should be able to find a solid example in the mid-twenty to mid-thirty thousand dollar range. Just because they are affordable doesn’t mean they are not appreciating. Values have increased 26 percent since 2018. That may not match Bitcoin, but a Land Cruiser is a heck of a lot more fun to own. Unlike the LFA the Land Cruiser was never meant to be a limited production collectible. Over the years, over 10 million Land Cruisers have been built. However, the FZJ80 stands out as the last with an inline-six and a solid front axle. It was also more refined than the older versions with a coil-spring suspension and four-wheel disc brakes. It hits that Goldilocks, just right mix between old and new.
The Land Cruiser is also world famous for running forever. Toyota built these to last for a very long time, and they are living up to it. The classic SUV market has been hot lately, and there is no reason to think this Land Cruiser will not continue the trend. The trick now is to find a good one before they are all snapped up.
Future Collectible Toyotas
By and large we agree with Hagerty on these two vehicles. However, are there others that should be on the list or that might show up in the years to come? The A80 Supra is an obvious choice but it was already named to the Hagerty list back in 2018. The first generation MR2 was also already called out. How about a first-generation Lexus LS400? That car changed the entire luxury car landscape when it was launched. They are dirt cheap today, but like any Lexus built to last. Will it be a future collectible? On the Toyota side how about a 1990 Celica All-Trac Turbo? Styling that has stood the test of time, a rally racing heritage and relative rarity could drive up future prices.
