How-To Tuesday: Melting Dash? This Is the DIY for You
When I first read the headline of today’s featured How-To Tuesday article, “Lexus IS: Why Is My Dashboard Melting?“, I immediately figured there could be only one culprit: dragons!
Unfortunately, I was wrong. And this is unfortunate not only because we don’t get to see any real-life dragons (yet), but also because it turns out that the real culprit is far too mundane to be causing such mayhem to our beloved marque. Yes, as you may have guessed (after you ruled out dragons), this monstrous dash-melter is something as simple as the sun.
According to the highly informative how-to article, “the dashboards on some newer IS 250s and IS 350s have been melting after exposure to sunlight. This is mostly happening to drivers living in warmer climates, especially Florida.” (Please insert your own Florida joke here.)
Lexus has acknowledged the problem, and though they haven’t explained why it’s occurring, there is a chance they’ll cover it, especially if your loyal steed is still under warranty. So Step 1 in this moderately cheap and easy DIY is to call the dealership and let them make it cheaper and easier.
For those of you whose dealerships are not going to replace the melted dash, you’ll want to proceed to Step 2: protecting the dashboard. The article gives you a few options that will at least stop the melting from getting worse, though a full-on restoration may not be in the cards. Which is a bummer, but things could be worse: at least you don’t have a dragon problem.
