How-To Tuesday: Replacing the Air Filter in Your Lexus IS

As the old adage goes: if you ain’t got that flow, then your IS may not get up and go. You’ve heard that one, right?

Regardless, you should be well aware of the fact that a dirty air filter can cause your car to lose power, affect your car’s gas mileage, or give it a rough idle. None of which is any good. But worry not! Today’s How-To Tuesday article is here to help make sure you never experience such ill fates. The article, and the corresponding video below, will help you to identify when you have a dirty air filter in your Lexus IS 250 or IS 350 between the model years 2005-2014, and how to change it if you do.

Generally speaking, the air filter should be changed about every 10,000 or so miles. But depending on how dusty a climate you live in, you’ll want to check it after 6,000 or so, just to make sure you’re achieving proper flow. If not, then a cost-saving DIY fix is only a couple of hours away. Not only will you save money by not having a mechanic do the work for you, but you can expect to see a 14% improvement in gas mileage too.

Though you’re only really dealing with a three-step process, this is a moderately difficult job, due to the fact that you’ll be handling the HVAC system. But the only tools you’ll need are a Phillips screwdriver, a 10mm socket, and a new air filter.

After that, it’s as easy as 1, 2, 3: unscrewing the air intake assembly cover, unclipping the air box, and replacing the air filter. So what are you waiting for? Faster acceleration and better gas mileage could be flowing your way soon.
