Hybrid Power for the People: Toyota, Lexus Dominating European Sales

Lexus and Toyota have been perfecting hybrid electrification for some time now, and it’s really starting to pay off, especially in Europe.

In 2016, Toyota and Lexus are expected to sell over 900,000 vehicles throughout the old continent, and a third of those should be hybrids. That’s accounting for this year’s whopping 45-percent increase in hybrid sales over 2015’s January to August period.

Also interesting, as Carscoops points out, 31 percent of European Toyota/Lexus customers are choosing hybrid powertrains for their next vehicle. If you’re just talking Western Europe, that number jumps to 41 percent.

Many of those increases can be attributed to Toyota’s new hybrid Prius, which has sold more than 12,000 units thus far in 2016, more than double last year’s sales output. And Auris, Rav4, and Yaris hybrids are also doing well.

As far as Lexus goes, hybrid sales account for 61 percent of their cars sold in Europe. That number climbs to a staggering 98 percent in Western Europe. All told, Lexus expects to sell upwards of 300,000 hybrids in Europe this year.

With such hybrid success, it makes sense that Toyota Motor Co. is planning on introducing three new hybrids at the upcoming Paris Auto Show: the C-HR Hybrid, the Prius Plug-In Hybrid, and the highly anticipated Lexus LC 500h Coupe.
