Is the Toyota Supra Done After 2026?
The collaboration between BMW and Toyota appears to be ending and that could spell the end for the Toyota Supra.
When the fifth generation Toyota Supra came out for the 2020 model year it set the automotive world on fire. Internet memes were born, fans were passionate on both sides of the fence over the design and the collaboration with BMW. The cars began to show up in droves at local track days thanks to a complimentary track day and membership with the National Auto Sport Association. Automotive journalists praised the car but wished it had a manual transmission and a bit more power. In 2021 Toyota responded with a significant power upgrade for the 3.0L turbocharged inline six cylinder. Then in 2023 we got the manual transmission we all wanted. Now the Supra was a true sportscar. And then everyone stopped buying it. And now it is facing extinction after 2026.
According to a report by Automotive News, production of the Supra and the BMW Z4 that it shares so much with is ending in 2026. BMW doesn’t seem interested in extending the Z4 beyond 2026. And if the Z4 goes away, the Supra will likely go with it. Toyota fans complained about the BMW collaboration and the extensive parts sharing. But the fact of the matter is the new Supra would not exist without BMW. And unless Toyota can find another partner to develop a new Supra with, they will likely drop the model.
Sales Dried Up
For all the buzz and excitement around the Toyota Supra, sales have been disappointing, especially in the last couple of years. In 2023 Toyota sold 2,652 Supras, which is roughly half as many as they sold in 2022. How bad are Supra sales? In 2023 it was outsold by the hydrogen-fueled electric Mirai sedan. And the Mirai is only sold in Southern California. The Supra and most other sporty Toyota models were pushed forward by former CEO Akio Toyoda. With Toyoda now out of the picture, it is unlikely that Toyota will build a new generation of the slow selling Supra. Especially if they must front all of the R&D costs on their own if they can’t find someone like BMW to partner with again.
Not Dead Yet
The window of opportunity to buy a new Supra may be closing, but it is not closed yet. You can hop on the Supra configurator right now and build one. A 382 horsepower, manual transmission car with a 0 to 60 mph time of less than 4 seconds can be yours for less than $60K. Comparable cars such as the Porsche Cayman, Chevrolet Corvette, Lotus Emira, and even the BMW Z4 sibling will all cost significantly more. If you have been on the fence about pulling the trigger on a new Supra, the news of its possible demise should push you over the edge. Don’t miss out on this special car. Even if Toyota does resurrect the Supra someday it will likely be a very different, electrified version. And who knows, if enough people buy one now, it might convince Toyota to keep it around a bit longer.
