Last New Lexus LFA in Australia Was Finally Sold This June
Only 10 Lexus LFA examples were originally delivered to Australia, and this one was just reported as sold for a very good reason.
A few years ago, the automotive world was whipped into a literal frenzy when it was discovered that there were a handful of unsold, brand new, Lexus LFA examples sitting at dealers across the U.S. This was, of course, due to the fact that the high-revving, sweet-sounding supercar was quite expensive when new, not quite as capable as its competition, and just plain underrated. Now, years later, that’s no longer the case, as Lexus LFA values have risen considerably as the V10-powered supercar, in general, is bowing out. However, it seems as if there was at least one other brand new example out there in the world that just sold last month in Australia, according to Drive.
It may seem hard to believe that a highly desirable machine such as the LFA would still be sitting around collecting dust, but there is a bit of a catch to this story. The car was indeed sold for the first time, according to the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries, but only because the Toyota dealership that owns it was obliged to report it as such. The LFA hasn’t been delivered to a customer, and it’s still on display in the dealer’s showroom in brand new, unused condition.
This wasn’t just done for fun and games, however, but rather, the Lexus LFA needed to be legally “sold” in order to satisfy laws that govern the approval, registration, and importing of vehicles in Australia. The country recently transitioned from the old Motor Vehicle Standards Act that was established in 1989 to the new Road Vehicle Standards Act back on July 1.
The dealer had to report its Lexus LFA display piece as sold prior to this deadline so that it could be added to the Register of Approved Vehicles (RAV). Had it opted not to do so prior to the deadline, it’s possible that the car would not be eligible to be legally registered in Australia in the future. Given the fact that only 10 LFAs were originally delivered to Australia in the first place, coupled with the fact that these machines are selling for more than double their sticker price these days, we certainly can’t blame the dealer for doing precisely that.
