Lexus Continues to Dominate Japan’s Super GT Championship
After four wins, Lexus suffers first Super GT loss of 2017, which tells you everything you need to know about the brand’s motorsports effort.
Lexus might still be working its way back into a heavy motorsports presence, but that doesn’t mean the brand isn’t already doing a good job at it. Particularly in Japan’s Super GT Championship series. Not only has Lexus fared well in the production-based touring car series, it’s flat out dominated the competition — to the tune of winning the first four out of five races.
This, in spite of the fact that the Super GT GT500 class features some of the tightest, most exciting racing you’ll find anywhere in the world. Where major manufacturers like Toyota, Nissan, and Honda duke it out on their home turf. And with only three races left in the 2017 season, it’s quite clear who’s coming out on top. In fact, the top three teams in the Super GT rankings all drive Lexus LC 500s.
Lexus’ run on an undefeated season finally came to an end last weekend at Fuji Speedway when a Honda NSX took the checkered flag. But Lexus still claimed third and fourth place, as well as sixth, seventh, ninth, and tenth. And they still hold five out of the top six spots in team rankings. No matter what your definition of the word “dominate” is, we’re pretty sure that qualifies.
Combine that with their improving results in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, and it’s safe to say that Lexus motorsports is back. And for fans of both racing and Lexus road cars, that’s what we call a decisive win.
The Lexus RC F GT3s next compete at Virginia International Raceway on August 27. The nearly three-hour race will feature GT cars only.
